  • Traditional Armenian cuisine (Bread, Tolma, Khorovats) is diverse and rich in food prepared from cultured and wild plants and fruits, game and fish; but much of the Armenian cooking is based on lamb, either grilled and served as shashlik with flat bread, or prepared as soup (the most popular being bozbash, a dish which exists in infinite variations) or stew, often in combination with fruit or nuts. The most common breakfast contains cheese, honey, jam, butter, sausage and similar cold meals, eggs, franks, tea or coffee.
Supper is similar to dinner, without the soup.

Despite being out of the way, Anguilla has been inhabited, in some shape or form, for tens of thousands of years. Archaeologists recently discovered remains of the largest rodent known to have walked the earth - it was reckoned at about 3 feet (1 metre) high and weighing up to 350 pounds (160 kilos) and became extinct from Anguilla about 20,000 years ago. More recently the island was inhabited from about 2000 BC by the Arawak Indians who had gradually moved up through the Caribbean island chain from South America in their dugout canoes. 42 Amerindian archaeological sites of interest have been uncovered in Anguilla revealing many artifacts attesting to their presence and the richness of their culture. Many examples can now be seen at the National Trust Museum.
The English colonised the island in about 1650 but were themselves wiped out by the Caribs, a warrior people from South America, in 1656. The power struggle between the English and the French in the Caribbean dominated Anguilla's history for the next 150 years and severely disrupted their basic cash crop economy. Anguillans experienced many hardships trying to eke out a living during political wrangling between these two powers.

The name 'Anguilla' means 'eel' and well describes its long, thin shape. Its people are of mixed origins, though primarily of African descent. The island is very flat with its highest point at a little over 200 feet (70 metres). Rainfall levels are low and the resulting vegetation is mostly small trees and bush.

    Artifacts of Anguilla
The four artifacts depicted on this stamp issue represents the cultural, religious customs and interpretations of an indigenous tribe which inhabited Anguilla up until the early 15th century. These treasured artifacts which were unearthed at various sites on the island indicate that the Amerindian population was widely dispersed on Anguilla. Stone Pestle The pestle is on display at Heritage Collection Museum in East End.
Sandy Ground Shell Frog The artifact may represent a higher status ornament worn by an elite individual, likely a member of the Arawak speaking Taino culture, or related group. This shell frog dates between A.D. 900-1500. Crock, John G. and James B. Petersen

    Pottery
The pelican head which once adorned an Arawak pottery bowl was found at an Arawak site in Island Harbour, by Historian Colville Petty. It dates around 900 - 1200 AD. It is believed that the pelican was greatly revered by the Arawaks. Only about two percent of pottery found on Anguilla is decorated. The pelican head is on display at Heritage Collection Museum in East End.
