Sources concerning African history (editing, methodological problems) This project aims at publishing, in accordance to academic regulations, sources relating to history and African ethnology (written sources of every kind, oral tradition and other fieldwork material, ethnographic collections made by European institutions, historic photographs and other visual illustrations etc.). It is often very difficult, especially for Africans, to use the diverse and scattered sources of colonial times for historical purposes. The Institute's series Studien zur Kulturkunde and, more recently, Afrika-Archiv Beatrix Heintze Hand in hand with editing the sources, a careful critique of the sources must be carried out. Whereas the methodology of non-written sources of African history was subject to lively and fertile discussions, up to the beginning of the eighties written sources provoked no such discussions worth mentioning, nor did they get any systematic treatment. Moreover, the lack of data and "hard" facts often lead to rash and uncritical "script credibility". This research project (up to now Beatrix Heintze's main interest) addresses these themes. Completed Study Regional Restoration Across the Kwanza, Basin, Angola Michael R. Hudec and Martin P. A. Jackson Restoration of a 375-km-long section across the Kwanza Basin, Angola, shows three stages of deformation detached on Aptian salt, each caused by basement activity. First, tilting related to postrift thermal subsidence initiated early Albian deformation, shortly after salt deposition ended. Deformation waned in the late Albian, probably owing to thinning of salt lubricant beneath the extensional province. The second phase of deformation was triggered by hitherto unrecognized crustal uplift beneath the continental rise around 75 Ma (Campanian). Uplift of the thick salt plateau led to salt extrusion and seaward advance of the Angola Salt Nappe over the abyssal plain. Click on image
to enlarge.
Exposure of the nappe toe removed the buttress provided by abyssal-plain cover, which rejuvenated seaward translation. Third, Miocene basement uplift below the shelf steepened the bathymetric slope and greatly accelerated downslope translation. This deformation is now slowing because thickening sediments on the abyssal plain have reduced the relief of the system and blocked salt-napped advance.

Ethnische Grenzen und Frontlinien in Angola

The present study on the history of the Angolan war of independence since 1961 focuses primarily on three factors that have contributed to the persistence of the conflict, despite international pressure for peace: ethnicity, nationalism and internationalization. Contrary to the usual characterization of the conflict as an international war by proxy drawn from the cold war period, the author stresses the role of the involved countries since the demise of this era. The continuing international involvement in this conflict is readily apparent by the important position occupied by the arms suppliers and mining companies of the interested countries.
The discussion of possible factors for the ethnification of Angolan society arrives at the conclusion that the Angolan example represents a case of “politicized ethnicity”. Party loyalties are determined by ethnic, geographic and regional affiliations and are instrumentalized by the political leadership in their struggle to obtain access to the natural resources. Ethnicity in this context becomes abused as the vehicle to mobilize the different ethnic groups which hitherto have been denied participation in the use of the resources of the land.
The results contained in this book are especially valuable for readers in the fields of conflict and peace research which are also interested in anthropological and political aspects. The appendices provide a chronological overview of the recent political and economic history of Angola.

Peace-building in Africa - A Challenge for Ecumenism: The Case of Angola (An Outline)
Konrad Raiser, October 2003 1. While Angola shares many characteristics with other countries in sub-Sahara Africa, it stands out in other respects, at least from an outside perspective:
  • It has the longest Christian presence in black Africa, and the proportion of the Christian population today is among the highest in Africa. It is also the country with the longest anti-colonial and post-independence conflict of more than forty years which was fuelled by foreign political and economic interests and left Angola in ruins. It is one of the richest countries in Africa in terms of its natural resources, with an annual revenue from oil exports of an estimated US$ 3-5 billion, but with a population of which three quarters live in absolute poverty with less than US$ 1 per day.
  • Thus, Angola carries a heavy burden of the most adverse conditions faced by the countries in sub-Sahara Africa. 1. Forty years of almost continuous war which increased in brutality during the final phases have left the country, its infrastructure and its social fabric in ruins. More than one million people died, most of them civilians, who were taken hostage by the fighting parties. Four million people have become refugees or internally displaced during the final phase of the fighting alone. Large parts of the country are still highly insecure due to the 20 million land mines which were placed during the war. Now, at long last, the fighting has stopped after the 2002 peace accord between the government and UNITA. With the memory of three previous agreements in 1991, 1994 and 1997 which failed, there is hope that this time the peace will last and that reconstruction can begin.

    University of Virginia South Asianists had earlier achieved a considerable degree of organization in the region, largely through the outreach activities of the National Defense Education Act Title VI center at the University of Virginia, led by historian Professor Walter Hauser. There was also a Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies (SASAAAS), oriented more toward teaching and public outreach than the SSRC Seminar program, but nonetheless illustrative of the possibilities of a regional organization in the enthusiastic participation it enjoyed. There was also interest in forming a less structured Southern Association of Africanists in the region, led by Ann Dunbar and others in central North Carolina, and focused on teaching outreach. Ann Dunbar organized the last meeting of the Seminar's first year at the University of North Carolina on April 20, 1974, focused on discussion of Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, with copies provided to all members. Akpan (South Carolina State College) and Nyang presented papers, with comments by Sagay and Thornton. (See report to SSRC, Appendix IId.) Expenses totaled $308.99. On the strength of the benefits that all participants felt they had gained from the Seminar's first year, and indications of continued sponsorship from several institutions in the region, the group resolved to apply for an extension of the Seminar's SSRC funding. All the papers from the year were filed with the Library of Congress through the chief its Exchange and Grant Division (Nathan R. Einhorn).

      < BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Figure 1. Administrative Divisions of Angola, 1988 Clearly, turmoil, victimization, and disappointment are themes that have pervaded Angola's history, especially since the arrival of Europeans in the fifteenth century. Although the Portuguese crown initially sent to Angola teachers to educate and priests to proselytize, Portugal eventually came to view the area mainly as a source for slaves, especially for Brazil, its colony across the Atlantic Ocean. In the several centuries during which the slave trade flourished, scholars estimate that 4 million Africans from the Angola region were taken into slavery. Of this number, perhaps half died before reaching the New World. During its five centuries of colonization, Portugal treated Angola mostly with indifference or hostility. Although Angolans were often responsible for enslaving other Africans, Portuguese traders provided the impetus and the market for slaving. By raising small armies, Portuguese fought their way into Angola's interior, disrupting as they went kingdoms having sophisticated civilizations. Less alluring to Portuguese settlers than Brazil, Angola generally attracted poorer immigrants, a great many of whom were degredados (see Glossary), or exiled convicts. Portugal's exploitation of Angola did not cease even after slavery had been legally abolished in Angola in 1858. Lisbon spent the last part of the nineteenth century engaged in wars against the African kingdoms that it had not yet conquered and in consolidating its hold on territories awarded to it at the Berlin Conference of 1884 during the so-called scramble for Africa.

    Practiced widely today in urban Brazil and elsewhere, capoeira is a complex Afro-Brazilian martial art that originated in early slave culture. At once game, sport, mock combat, and ritualized performance, it involves two players who dance and battle within a ring of musicians and singers. Feats requiring great acrobatic athleticism and strength combine with music and poetry in a form as expressive in movement as it is in word. J. Conventional weapons systems, so decisive in conflicts where military is pitched against military, have little real effect in maintaining the security of civilian populations during and after wars. The majority of casualties, of abuses of authority and of indiscriminate killings are caused by the availability and use of small arms.
    Since small arms and light weapons, which include landmines, machine guns, grenades, pistols and rocket launchers, are standard issue during violent conflict and are not normally controlled during post-conflict processes, the potential of these weapons for illegal use - and abuse - is substantial. Because conflict resolution processes depend on socio-economic development, effective democracy and security (as seen in a credible law and order structure), these remedies require time and stability for their successful implementation. If there is indiscriminate access to the tools of violence (i.e., weapons), stability will be harder to maintain and development in time of peace will not take place.
    Seldom, if ever, have all weapons been collected at the end of an armed struggle. Physical security, primacy and economic necessity generate the force that propels the trade in small arms;
