Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by slaves. It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It also has a strong acrobatic component in some versions and is always played with music. The word capoeira has a few meanings, one of which is an area forest or jungle that has been cleared by burning or cutting down. Alternatively, Kongo scholar K. Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau thinks that capoeira could be a deformation of the kikongo word kipura , which means means to flutter, to flit from place to place; to struggle, to fight, to flog. In particular, the term is used to describe rooster's movements in a fight. Breakdancing , developed in the 1970s, has many analogous moves; thus, many believe that capoeira is its root. Indeed, many Brazilians had imigrated to the the US , and particularly to New York , by that time, and would practice capoeira in the streets where it was able to influence, and probably be influenced by, this new dance form.

Players and watchers come together in a Roda. The person who plays the Berimbau is either of a high rank or the Mestre, and is in charge of regulating the game. The Berimbau begins the rhythm and the other instruments join in as the audience claps. Once everyone is adjusted to the rhythm the Berimbau player starts singing. The crowd echoes the end of every stanza.
Two people from the crowd enter the Roda and meet in front of the Berimbau. Once everyone is ready the leader lowers the top of his Berimbau signalling to the players that they may start the Jogo. The players shake hands and begin entering the Roda. Players must enter the game in a very cautious way, always aware of any possible counters from the partner. A slow Rolé, Queda de Rins, Headstand or closed Au are common entrances.
Unlike Regional, Capoeiristas cannot simply buy into a game of Angola. Players must wait their turn by the Berimbau. Also, it is strictly wrong to attempt buying into the game while a player is making a Chamada. But like Regional, players can walk around the inside the circle to recover.

      Capoeira: A Quest For Freedom
Capoeira has a very long history and it would be very hard for me to try and compress that history and properly tell Capoeira's story in one page.
What Capoeira actually is, is also very hard to put on paper. To really get an idea for it you have to see it. When you do you'll see people dancing pair by pair in a circle of people who are clapping their hands and singing in Portuguese. There will be people playing strange, primitive African instruments, tambourines, drums, shakers, and bells. But then the dancers looks as though they are fighting, launching kicks at each other, avoiding them with impressive acrobatics. Then some dances are slow and hug the ground, the people contorting their bodies. Some people are blessing themselves as they enter the circle, making the sign of the cross. It's all a very amazing synthesis of culture, music, singing, dance and fight. It can't possibly be explained on a page, let alone a book.
Thankfully, through movies and video games, a lot more people have some idea of what Capoeira is but if you don't it is encouraged that you have a look at the classes taught in Perth or catch one of the public demonstrations that happen fairly regularly around our city.

The European demand for slaves encourages this chronic warfare. Portugal contributes to the instability as it clashes with neighboring kingdoms to establish and expand Angola, a small colony at the northwestern tip of the present country of Angola. The eastern savanna witnesses the rise of the Kuba kingdom and the Luba and Lunda empires , three multi-ethnic states with advanced political systems and rich courtly cultures. While the more isolated Kuba kingdom does not have direct contact with European merchants at this time, Lunda rulers actively encourage trade by opening routes to the coast. Territorial expansion southward to the African Copperbelt in present-day Zambia and east toward Lake Tanganyika extends Lunda commercial control over goods and materials from the East African coast and southern interior. To the north, Luba kings consolidate their political and economic control over neighboring peoples.
Luba rulers extend their political and economic influence through conquest and alliances, spreading governmental structures and chiefly emblems such as royal canes, bracelets, and axes throughout the region.

    S¡mi history and policy
In his speech during the official opening of the S¡mediggi (S¡mi Parliament) in 1997, HM King Harald V emphasized that both the S¡mi people and the Norwegians are an integral part of Norwegian society, and apologized for the manner in which the S¡mi people had been treated in the past: “The state of Norway was founded on the territory of two peoples - the S¡mi people and the Norwegians. S¡mi history is closely intertwined with Norwegian history. Today, we express our regret on behalf of the state for the injustice committed against the S¡mi people through its harsh policy of Norwegianization.” At the end of the 1800s, the Norwegian authorities imposed a strict policy of Norwegianization on the S¡mi people and national minorities. Towards the late 1930s, a more positive minority policy perspective began to emerge in relation to the S¡mi people. In 1956, the Ministry of Church and Education appointed a committee to examine S¡mi issues. The committee’s report, completed in 1959, proposed a new policy that represented a complete shift away from the Norwegianization and assimilation policy. Building on these recommendations, the Ministry submitted a Report to the Storting in 1962-63 that formed the basis for the first comprehensive parliamentary debate regarding the fundamental principles governing Norwegian S¡mi policy.

The second field of reflection and debate focused on the economic and social impact of transport, movement and communication on the people and areas concerned. In what sense have regional conditions and histories been affected by the dynamic of certain types of transport routes and communications ? Or vice versa, what influence did conditions in various parts of the region have on the history of transport and communication? These questions were addressed by the papers of Mariana Candido Emmanuel Esteves and presented in Session 3 (under the same heading as this section) and by an additional paper supplied by Jelmer Vos , circulated in absentia. All of the papers dealt with different forms of transport and traffic along particular transport routes during specific periods of Angolan history, and asked about their specific consequences (economic, political, social, demographic) for the regions and populations concerned.

    ANGOLA ON THE MOVE:
TRANSPORT ROUTES, COMMUNICATIONS, AND HISTORY Version S ummary Extract from an Angolan Map (1870)
The chief purpose of the Symposium was, firstly, to produce a better understanding of the dynamics of the transport routes and communications that have had a fundamental impact on African history for centuries. Secondly, prominence was to be given to the case of Angola and its hinterland, which in many respects resembles a microcosm of African history in its entirety. Time and again, long and often precarious lines of transport and communication have played a crucial role in this space. The studies on the latter looked at the movement of people and the transport of trade goods, as well as at the circulation of various kinds of knowledge and information.
While the presentations and discussions took place in nine sessions, their results will be summarized along five specific areas of debate. Firstly, it was pointed out that the region has an enduring history of transport and communication modernization. Under the specific conditions of colonial rule and early world-market integration through slaves and tropical products, however, this modernization process was marked by a number of profound contradictions. The case of Angola is a clear illustration of these contradictions and ambivalences, even in certain periods prior to the 20th century.
