PEACE EDUCATION AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION IN ANGOLA
By: Luis Samacumbi
Luanda, Angola, June 2003.
Introduction:
It is for this reason that I valued the need for peace education through which people can be taught how to keep hope alive toward a more peaceful world. Because I strongly believe that peace is actually possible. "We commit ourselves to non-violence and look for ways to break the cycles of violence in our own lives and in our own households". (Harris, 2003:1) Peace education is the starting point from which we can work to change individual and societal thinking in order to give up too easy violent approaches. This paper will explore the debates taking place in the field of peace education, through which I will show my own understanding of peace education as well as the justification of my position. A short description of Angola with particular reference to issues of conflict and violence will be provided. Finally, an exploration of how peace education might work in the Angolan context and of what form it should take will also given. Exploring Current Debates of Peace Education: There are a number of different understandings of peace education, which emphasize different target audiences, different areas of focus, and even different outcomes.

CAPOEIRA ANGOLA CLUB
of the University of Colorado-Boulder
Capoeira Angola is an African-Brazilian folk art that combines playful sparring, music, dance, ritual and philosophy into a unique game that’s dangerous, yet beautiful. The roots of Capoeira can be traced back to the N’golo, an acrobatic challenge dance from Angola, West Africa. It’s influences can be found in the realms of break dancing, hip hop, jazz and more. It was one of various cultural weapons used to break the chains of slavery in Brazil. Beginners and newcomers are always welcome! Please join us this fall for a series of workshops and a performance featuring Mestre Joao Grande and special guests on September 9 - 11th. Times and locations Class Times

The Medical Culture of the Ovambo of Southern Angola and Northern Namibia
University of Kent at Canterbury
ABSTRACT This thesis focusses on the medical culture of the Ovambo peoples of southern Angola and northern Namibia, a group who have been little-researched anthropologically. Because health and affliction are such poignant human concerns, the study of a society's medical culture can tell us much about their social and cultural organisation in general. It is for this reason that Ovambo medical culture has been examined in relation to the wider socio-cultural background, rather than in isolation; especially since Ovambo evidence has shown that concern about health and affliction is not confined to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of individuals, but extends to include harmonious social relations, environmental and economic prosperity, and political stability. A holistic analytical approach has been adopted, whereby all aspects of the medical culture are considered (insofar as the data allow), as opposed to only certain aspects. Ovambo beliefs and practises relating to health and health maintenance are therefore discussed, as well as external (i.e. European) medical influences. Particular attention has been paid to Ovambo use of plants as medicines, as well as to their prophylactic and propitiatory measures, since these are areas of ethnomedical research that are identified as being under-researched. Focussing upon these areas has also highlighted the significance of material culture in the Ovambo medical domain, and the value of museum collections of ethnography in this regard.

U.S. Embassy, Office of Public Affairs Angola's National Museum of Anthropology Benefits from Materials Donated by the U.S. Embassy The U.S. Embassy in Luanda has donated on behalf of the U.S. government $25,000 of conservation and inventorying materials to Angola's National Museum of Anthropology. These purchases were made possible by the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation of the U.S. Department of State, and are a follow-up to a visit to Angola last year by the Chief Conservator and Chief Curator of the National Museum of African Art of the U.S. Donated materials are tools for conservation, including twelve storage cabinets, light and humidity meters, and a vacuum, as well as equipment for inventorying the museum's collection, including a color printer and digital and film cameras. The donation occurred on Tuesday, September 9 in the park of the National Anthropology Museum at 1600. U.S. Ambassador Christopher W. Dell delivered the donation. He said, "the propose of this U.S. Government donation is to support Angolans' efforts towards preserving the unique cultural heritage of this country. This donation is a result of a visit, last year, by Chief Conservator and Chief Curator of the U.S. National Museum of African Art who worked with staff of this institution on the creation of an inventory of the existing artifacts and left suggestions to improve conservation techniques."
