The Carnival has started already, it is the greatest popular festivity of the country, just like in many other countries. It is a mass festivity that on the central act day, 04 March, will take a lot of people to Luanda's Marginal avenue. It is obvious that, in this edition, the participants are determined to show to the world the new face of Angola and say that, in spite of cultural, political and ideological differences, it is really possible for people to live together as brothers.

About Angola Business Opportunities Tourism Visa Application ... About India
Art and Culture of Angola As with most African art, the wooden masks and sculptures of Angola are not merely aesthetic creations. They play an important role in cultural rituals, representing life and death, the passage from childhood to adulthood, the celebration of a new harvest and the marking of the hunting season. Angolan artisans work in wood, bronze, ivory, malachite or ceramic mediums. Each ethno-linguistic group in Angola has its own unique artistic traits. Perhaps the single most famous piece of Angolan art is the Cokwe thinker, a masterpiece of harmony and symmetry of line. The Lunda-Cokwe in the north eastern part of Angola are also known for their superior plastic arts.
Other signature pieces of Angolan art include: The female mask Mwnaa-Pwo worn by male dancers in their puberty rituals. polychromatic Kalelwa masks used during circumcision ceremonies Cikungu and Cihongo masks which conjure up the images of the Lunda-Cokwe mythology. Two key figures in this pantheon are princess Lweji and the civilizing prince Tschibinda-Ilunga. the black ceramic art of Moxico of central/eastern Angola Prior to the late 1980s, all marketing of handicrafts were under the control of Artiang, an arm of the Ministry of Culture. However once this commercial monopoly over the production of art was removed, art in Angola blossomed. As the wooden masks and statues of Africa have grown in popularity in the West, the handicraft industry in Angola has sought to meet the demand for African art. The stylized masks and trinkets that are created to catch a tourist's eye are commonly known as "airport art." They are pieces produced in series, to the taste of the average tourist, but lack any real link to the deeper cultural undercurrents of the people.

Angola
After almost thirty years of war, the Angolan cultural infrastructure was completely destroyed. Since the arrival of peace in 2002 the arts sector has concentrated on recovery. The provisional Angolan cultural policy, as presented by minster Boaventura Cardoso in March 2003, is aimed at making culture accessible for everybody. In addition, new technologies should improve the state of museums and archives. Tax benefits should boost investment in art. The government has recenlty commissioned an extensive research project into the history of Angolan literature . And since 2000, the National Culture Award has been granted annually in order to encourage the arts. ANGOLA Many Angolan web sites deal with either politics or news - perhaps not surprising given the ongoing civil war. What is perhaps surprising is that you can tune into the national radio service online, or keep up to date with what's happening on the arts scene. The official language is Portuguese, but most sites are available in English. There are a number of private ISPs but coverage is by no means national at the moment as the war has devastated the country's telecoms infrastructure.

The Pwo performer is dressed like a woman, and he dances elegantly and gracefully, showing the women of the village the value of graciousness and good manners (Bastin 1984 a:212-13). Two marks of beauty, a Maltese Cross design (Cingelyengelye) on the forehead and tooth deformation, are characteristic cultural features of the Chokwe-Lunda. Masks of this type, known as Mwana Po, were worn with a costume of netting that covered the male dancer's entire body. The dance performed by the wearer of this mask is recorded to have been a satire mimicking the affections of pretty young women. P wo The masks of the Chokwe female ancestor. Search for Common Ground in Angola was established in August 1996 to support the national reconciliation process and the consolidation of peace. Through a return to war in 1998, SFCG remained committed to assisting Angolans to demand and create the basis for sustainable peace. With the ceasefire after the death of UNITA rebel leader Jonas Savimbi in April 2002, peace appears to be a reality at last. SFCG has therefore shifted its goal to transforming Angolan society away from a culture of violence to one characterised by coexistence, security, social justice, and popular participation. To do so, SFCG now works to enable Angolans to address the root causes of past conflict constructively in a number of ways:
    • Increase and strengthen social cohesion between and among different sectors of Angolan society;
      Support the process of resettlement and reintegration of vulnerable groups, including returnees and ex-combatants;
      Enable Angolans to more fully participate in their nation's political, economic, and social development; and

Participating Advertiser Contact Information Arts and Culture: Art Movement In visual arts and dance, the creativity of Angolans has not been inhibited by war It is said that many millions of years ago, before the world's land mass split apart to form the five continents, Angola and Brazil were fused together. In terms of arts and culture, these two countries still seem to be as one. Some people believe that Angola's traditional semba music lies at the heart of Brazilian samba. Although the two types of music sound quite different, they share similar names and dance forms. As most of Brazil's slaves came from Angola, it is not surprising that some aspects of culture in the two countries are so similar. Angolan semba is an ancient rhythm, traditionally accompanied by smooth undulations of the hips and belly. Semba was originally danced to celebrate good harvests, marriages, births and other occasions. It developed in Angola's coastal centers, especially Luanda and Benguela during the 17th century. To this day, semba is regarded as the music of the sea. Before Portuguese missionaries spread Christianity throughout the country, Angolans used to dance semba as a way of worshipping their gods, especially the mermaid Kianda, goddess of the sea. Every year, Angolans would hold celebrations near the sea, throwing food, clothes and other gifts into the water as offerings to Kianda.
