MLK 2003 Perhaps the most important piece of Dr. King's legacy is his commitment to non-violent resistance and civil disobedience as tools for change. Dr. King demonstrated that non-violent protest would often yield results. Today, if you visit Washington, DC, you will see adherents of Dr. King's beliefs protesting across from the White House or outside of the Supreme Court about topics ranging from animal rights to U.S. foreign policy. Such peaceful demonstrations and protests are an essential ingredient in the recipe of U.S. democracy, and one of Dr. King's lasting contributions to our culture. ... [ Read More Links Read More V. Traffickers who forced women into prostitution continued to fraudulently recruit victims for work as dancers in cabarets and nightclubs on short-term "artiste" visas, for work in pubs and bars on employment visas, or for illegal work on tourist or student visas. People of Angola The majority of the population is made up of people from African descent. The Ovimbundu, Kimbundu, and Bakongo form the largest ethnic groups while a sizable mixed-race population is also present in Angola. Roman Catholics are in majority while Protestant forms a small section in the society. The official language is Portuguese but most of them speak a Bantu language. Arts and Crafts In Angola, art plays a very important role and the country's ethno-linguistic groups each have their own distinct artistic style, and various raw materials such as wood, clay, bronze, and malachite that they use to create beautiful works-of-art. These handicrafts have in turn played an important role in furthering commerce by developing a popularity among the tourists. Flag of Angola The flag of Angloa is made up of two equal horizontal bands of red (top) and black with a centered yellow emblem, consisting of a five-pointed star within half a cogwheel crossed by a machete (in the style of a hammer and sickle).

Economy of Angola Decades of war has played havoc with the economy of Angola. The rich agricultural sector of Angola was formerly the mainstay of the economy and even currently provides employment for the majority of the people. But food still needs to be imported in large quantities because of the disruptions caused by the civil war. All areas of production have suffered since fighting began in 1975.

Civil War Casualties A peace agreement signed in April 2002 ended the 25-year-old civil war that devastated the country. However, Angola is still unstable and unsuitable for travel. The end of hostilities is just the first step in Angola's journey of a thousand miles as the scars left by war will take a long time to heal. No infrastructure, poor roads, crime, and up to 11 million landmines - are just a few of the country's problems.

Luanda - Culture Angola was teetering on the brink of war, even while moves were afoot to avert yet another flare-up of this protracted conflict. Human rights abuses were widespread. The government, dominated by the Movement for the Popular Liberation of Angola (MPLA), and the armed opposition Union for the Total Independence (UNITA) restricted freedom of movement, arbitrarily abducted or detained civilians, censored information, and conscripted children. Both sides violated cease-fire agreements and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and looting were a persistent feature of military operations. The food deficit had reached levels which had never been seen in the past. As a result, there was a drastic reduction in people's ability to function and their ability to acquire food. Average daily consumption of calories was reduced to 1 900 Calories per person. All these factors combined increased poverty, disease and infant mortality which reached the frightening figure of 320 per thousand. In order to understand the problem better it is only necessary to add that, according to a survey carried out by the Angolan Statistical Institute, more than 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and 80 percent of food consumed in the country has to be imported. National Culture
The Angolan culture must achieve fufillment within the roots of the rich Angolan popular traditions, taking part in the socio-economic development of the country and extending into the universal context. A certain amount of fundamental work is therefore needed to encourage the people to take action and participate in the national cultural life, creating and developing a strong mass movement which is the fundamental object of the cultural policy. These principles are contained in the final resolution of the most important forum held until then in the Republic of Angola, the first symposium on national culture. This important meeting reviewed the situation in this area and disclosed the principal problems while indicating the avenues selected for cultural development in Angola.
Even if the socio -economic situation in the country since its independence is not propitious to rapid evolution of cultural events in many sectors, the symposium started to implement the fundamental guidelines indicated by the party. these are notably the development of cultural action in the areas of music, dance, theatre, cinema, literature, plastic arts and museology. The purpose is to propagate mass cultural action in the most diverse forms. Such are the condition required for fulfillment of national culture that is scientific, diversified and of a new type.

Civil war has been the norm in Angola since independence from Portugal in 1975. A 1994 peace accord between the government and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) provided for the integration of former UNITA insurgents into the government and armed forces. A national unity government was installed in April of 1997, but serious fighting resumed in late 1998, rendering hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Up to 1.5 million lives may have been lost in fighting over the past quarter century. The death of Jonas SAVIMBI and a cease fire with UNITA may bode well for the country. .

    Capoeira Angola
Capoeira Angola, an ancient martial art of African origin, is one of the many cultural weapons used to break the chains of enslavement in Brazil. Played close to the ground, Capoeira Angola combines fluid, dance-like movements with kicks, head butts, tripping sweeps and the appearance of playfulness or vulnerability. Music is played on traditional instruments to accompany the players, to teach the rhythmic heart of the art, and also to mask its power. In the eyes of the enslavers it appeared to be a joking and playful acrobatic dance, but eventually its power was realized and Capoeira was outlawed. Death was the penalty paid by those caught playing Capoeira during the slavery era. For almost 400 years Capoeira Angola was taught and practiced in secret, and only in the 1930's did this African martial art become legal to teach and practice.
