ANGLO-BOER WAR
The new Van Riebeeck Society publication THE WAR MEMOIRS OF COMMANDANT LUDWIG KRAUSE 1899-1900, edited by Jerold Taitz. 163 pages, coloured frontispiece, maps and illustrations, brown cloth, dust wrapper, Van Riebeeck Society, Second Series No.26. Cape Town 1996 R92 Commandant Ludwig ("Lodi") Krause compiled his memoirs in captivity in Pretoria early in 1901, shortly after being captured by the British forces. Born in Bloemfontein in 1872, he was unusually well educated for a Boer officer, having 4 university degrees by 1899, incl. an M.A. from Cambridge. Up to 1899 his career & that of his contemporary Jan Smuts moved together in roughly parallel fashion. Krause's family was a talented & distinguished one & this is exemplified by the career of his brother Fritz Krause, whose life "deserved to be made immortal.....through the annals of the ...film industry." A Pretoria advocate, Fritz Krause was responsible for the saving of the gold mines from destruction in 1900. After being captured he went on parole to London & was sentenced on trumped-up charges for "incitement to commit murder", serving 15 months in Holloway Prison. After the war he became Judge-President of the O.F.S. And paid a great deal of attention to penal reform. Breytenbach J.H. The Dutch East India Comapny founded a base at Table Bay on the west coast of near the southern tip of Africa. The British captured Capetown from the Dutch for the first time during the Napoleonic Wars. The British recaptured Capetown and took over Cape Province. The Zulu Mfecane spread from Natal throughout southern Africa. Andries Pretorius tried to unite Boers from Natal, Winburg and Transvval. The Europeans fought the sixth war with the Xhosa since the 1780s. A massive migration of Boer families began into the southern African interior, and resulted in the foundation of two Boer Republics, Transvaal ("across the Vaal River") and Orange Free State (after the Orange River). The British government annexed the coastal region of Natal. The British government annexed the Orange River Sovereignty. Boers attacked Moshoeshoe's Sotho kingdom (Basutoland).

Original and Contemporary Sources
"IT was on the morning of October 12th, amid cold and Mist, that the Boer camps at Sandspruit and Volksrust broke up, and the burghers rode to the war. Some twelve thousand of them, all mounted, with two batteries of eight Krupp guns each, were the invading force from the north, which hoped later to be joined by the Freestaters and by a contingent of Germans and Transvaalers who were to cross the Free State border. It was an hour before dawn that the guns started, and the riflemen followed close behind the last limber, so that the first light of day fell upon the black sinuous line winding down between the hills. A spectator upon the occasion says of them: "Their faces were a study. For the most part the expression worn was one of determination and bulldog pertinacity. No sign of fear there, nor of wavering...." Arthur Conan Doyle, The Great Boer War , London, 1901 My interest in Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the World Scout Movement, has led me many places. A respected officer in the British Army, it was at the Siege and Defense of Mafeking during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War that he made his name and first gained public recognition. In researching B-P's role and the events at Mafeking, I came across a chapter by one of my favorite authors, Arthur Conan Doyle. That was enough to move me to read his entire book on the War

The Anglo-Boer War
On October 11, 1899, the South African Boers declared war on Great Britain after the British failed to meet a South African ultimatum, issued 48 hours prior, which called for the removal of all imperial troops from the republic's borders. The Anglo-Boer war was the result of British Imperialism, nationalism on the part of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, and the discovery of gold. Divided into three separate conflicts (1st and 2nd Boer and Zulu), the conflicts are considered to be the last of the `gentlemen's wars,' the `last Colonial war' and the `forgotten war.' Read more to discover why this was the case.

(Auburn) [10.24 a.m.]: I move:
That this House notes the motion and debate by the New South Wales Colonial Legislative Assembly on 17, 18, 19 and 20 October 1899:
This House is of the opinion that New South Wales should equip and despatch a military force for service with the Imperial Army in South Africa.

In October 1899 troops from northern Transvaal and the Orange Free State, after a confrontation with the British Imperial Army, crossed the border into Natal. They proceeded to a place called Newcastle where they engaged in a slight battle. They then encircled the British Army, which was facing them, at Dundee, which was in Natal Province. The British Army retreated to Glencoe and, believing that they were going to be totally cut off by the Boer army - in Afrikaans the word "Boer" means farmer - they retreated further to Ladysmith, where they dug in, and for a long period during that siege at Ladysmith they engaged the Boer army in battle. As a consequence of that battle the Home Office in London, in an attempt to secure a United Nations front, called upon all its colonies to supply troops. It also called upon the six colonies of the continent of Australia to supply troops.
On 17, 18, 19 and 20 October 1899 debate on the matter ensued in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Yesterday was the centenary of the passing of a resolution to send 500 New South Welshmen to the Transvaal. Prior to these events Australia had sent colonial troops to Sudan - an unconstitutional act as no colonial parliament authorised the action. The sending of troops to South Africa was the first time that an Australian Parliament had authorised such action. The debate that ensued in the Legislative Assembly was entertaining and interesting. An article in the

With its post-apartheid identity still in the process of definition, there is undoubtedly an abundance of energy and sense of progress about the place.
