First War of Independence 1880 - 1881
In late 1880, emissaries of the Boer republic made another peaceful attempt to regain their independence, but when it, too, came to nought... war was declared.
British forces were marched northwest from Port Natal-Durban to Newcastle, from where they first attempted, on 28 January 1881, to invade Boer territory at Laing's Nek, in the vicinity of Volksrust. This attack failed, as did the second incursion, ten days later on the nearby Schuinshoogte ridge. The shortcomings of scarlet uniform, gleaming white helmet and conspicuous fighting formation saw the tide turn irrevocably against the British on the morning of 27 February 1881, on verdant slopes at the Battle of Majuba.
General Colley had led his troops up this 'Mountain of Doves' during the night, only to be killed as the Boer soldiers who climbed to an even higher position at daybreak put the British to flight. An armistice was signed a few days later at the foot of 'Majuba', followed by a peace treaty in Newcastle.
The subsequent Pretoria Convention, signed in October the same year, was never wholly acceptable to the fiercely independent Afrikaaner, and their discontent simmered for eight years until boiling over into the real Anglo- Boer War.

Ladies and Gentlemen, For a long time, the cultural landscape of South Africa has been out of balance. To this day, one does not often see, around the country, the memorials and monuments that represent the heritage of most South Africans. It is only now that the first tangible moves towards redress are being made - to re evaluate "the conventional" wisdom of history, and to listen anew to the narratives and experiences of our elders. Today, here in Mafikeng, we are honouring a rich heritage, made visible by a growing rediscovery of sites of historical significance. These are beginning to be identified by the community of Mafikeng. Now, on the centenary of the siege of Mafeking, the Anglo-Boer/South African War too is being revisited, and viewed through the lens of post apartheid, democratic South Africa. A hundred years ago, a twenty four-hour ultimatum from Paul Kruger to the British agent in Pretoria, expired. The next day, the country was at war. The first shots were fired by a Boer commando, at the Kraaipan railroad, south of Mafikeng, on Friday the 13th October. The Anglo-Boer War, an important episode in the long saga of a three-hundred-year long "South African War", was launched.

Home STATEMENT BY THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF ARTS, CULTURE, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, BRIGITTE MABANDLA, 5 OCTOBER 1999 COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE ANGLO-BOER / SOUTH AFRICAN WAR (1899 - 1902) INTRODUCTION The Anglo-Boer / South African War broke out on 11 October 1899. The ultimatum was issued on 9 October 1899. The war lasted until 31 May 1902 when the Treaty was signed in Vereeniging. Originally the war had been between the British Empire on one hand and the two Boer Republics - the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. But in reality, many people throughout the length and breadth of South Africa were affected by it. Volunteers from such countries as Russia and France as well as those who formally fought on the side of Britain viz, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all came to fight on South African soil. In the town which was then known as Mafikeng and surrounding areas, as well as in KwaMthashana near Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, black African communities took up arms and fought to protect their own territory and interests. Roles were also played by, inter alia, Mahatma Gandhi who was a volunteer stretcher-bearer in Spioenkop near Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. Historical evidence is that most people who inhabited South Africa were affected by the war. It is important to point out that blacks were largely victims of subterfuge. DEATHS AND SUFFERING In addition to the many who were wounded or died in many battles during the war, there were also women, elderly and children, black and white who died in the concentration camps. It is today estimated, through historical evidence that more than 20 000 Africans and almost a similar number of White women, children and elderly died from diseases and starvation in the concentration camps.

LIVING HISTORY
The end of the first modern war
Lucille Davie 31 May 2002 It was an event tinged with sadness, yet relief. It was the signing of the Peace of Vereeniging by the Boers and the British in a marquee in the small rural town of Vereeniging, 60 kilometres south-west of Johannesburg, on 31 May 1902. It marked the end of the three-year Anglo Boer War, one of the bitterest wars in colonial history. That was 100 years ago on Friday, 31 May. Saturday, 1 June, saw a centenary commemoration to the many who died in the War: 22 000 British soldiers, 7 000 Boers, 24 000 black men, women and children, and 22 000 white women and children, many of whom died in almost 200 concentration camps. Speaker in the City of Johannesburg chamber, Councillor Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, welcomed dignitaries and guests led by Arts, Culture, Science and Technology Minister Ben Ngubane to the Rand Regiments Memorial, in the grounds of the South African Military History Museum in Saxonwold, Johannesburg. Australia and Britain were represented by Major General P Leahy and Lt-General Sir T Granville-Chapman respectively at a wreath-laying ceremony. The Boer forces were represented by General Constand Viljoen, former general of the South African Defence Force.

The Boer or Afrikaaner inhabitants of Southern Africa, trace their origins back to Dutch, French and German Huguenot settlers of the mid 17th century. By the mid 19th century they had become a rugged, self-sufficient and independent people at odds with the British settlers and in conflict with African tribes. When the British government assumed the administration of the Cape Colony following the Napoleonic Wars, a large number of Boers set out on their Great Trek to the north. There they founded two Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, but there was to be no escape from further clashes of interest and problems of sovereignty with Britain, clashes that would eventually lead to war.
The first clash of arms went well for the Boers. Under the command of Major General Sir George Coffey, Britain sent, in 18801881, an expeditionary force tasked with annexing the Transvaal. The campaign was badly managed and the British were soundly defeated at Majuba Hill and forced to withdraw, leaving the Boer government intact and the British inhabitants of South Africa dismayed.
When gold was discovered in the Transvaal, its problems multiplied as foreigners (Uitlanders), mostly British, poured in. Soon outnumbering the original Boer inhabitants, the Uitlanders. demanded the right to vote and changes in the laws and taxation. A misguided attempt to assert Uitlander claims by force - the fated Jameson raid of 1895 - was easily crushed. Tension rose as the threatened Boers, with the encouragement of European powers, resisted British demands and strengthened their armouries. In September 1899, the Transvaal Boers began mobilising and most Uitlanders fled the country. War seemed inevitable.

When we were at school 70 years ago, a quarter of the World's map was coloured red to denote the territories of the British Empire on which the sun never set. Britain did not acquire this largest Empire in history by chance, or by mere luck, Britain fought its way at every turn in the face of jealous rivals such as Russia, France, Spain and Germany. Even when transport was slow and the motorcar and aeroplane were not yet in service, Britain could despatch half a million troops to South Africa to protect the long route to India via the Cape. Jews played a major part in Britain's ascendancy in the 19th Century. Benjamin Disraeli whose family were members of the Sephardi Bevis Marks Synagogue, acquired the shares of the Suez Canal with the help of the Rothschilds and he made Victoria Empress of India.

commemorate the Anglo-Boer South African War of
30 May 2002 On 31 May 1901 the Treaty Vereeniging was signed at Melrose House in Pretoria. The peace treaty signed by the British High Command and the two Boer Republics ended one of the bloodiest wars on South African soil. On 1 June 2002 South Africans will commemorate the Anglo Boer/South African war of 1899-1902 during a ceremony at the Rand Regiments Memorial in Johannesburg. The memorial was rededicated in 1999 and now stands in honour of all men, women and children, whether white or black, friend or foe, foreigner or South African. During the ceremony wreaths will be laid by various Embassies and descendants of those involved in the war, in honour of all persons, who died during the war. Speakers include Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology; Major General Sir Granville-Chapman who will speak on behalf of the British Government; General (retired) C Viljoen; and Lieutenant General P Leahy from Australia. Since 1999 Government embarked on a programme of commemoration whose theme was to investigate the involvement of black people in the Anglo Boer/South African War. Highlighting this aspect of the war has meant that it is now widely accepted that this did not only involve white men and women. Recent historical research shows evidence that women, the elderly, children from black and white communities were victims of diseases and starvation.

The Anglo-Boer War is said today to be the last of the `gentlemen's wars' , the `last Colonial war' and the `forgotten war'. It was soon overshadowed by World War 1, the unprecedented bloodbath of 1914-1918. Earlier during the Anglo-Boer War, the well-ordered forces of Greater Britain were put to the test by irregular commandos of Afrikaners (of Dutch extraction) which included swift-moving, mounted farmers armed with deadly Mauser rifles and bitter determination. Although described as the Anglo-Boer War, many nationalities were drawn into the conflict. There were Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, Ceylonese forces and Indian cavalry and, on the side of the Boers, Germans, French, Russians and Irishmen. Americans and Irishmen fought for both sides.

Initially they experienced some resistance from the regular British Army Nursing Service and local nurses, but performed well in scattered groups or singly from Cape Town and Durban to Rhodesia. They nursed the wounded but found a higher proportion of cases suffered from diseases such as enteric fever (typhoid).
