NEW YORK - Neil Young was treated for a brain aneurysm this week and remains hospitalized, although doctors expect a full recovery, his publicist said Friday. The 59-year-old rocker underwent a procedure to treat it Tuesday night at a New York hospital, where he was expected to remain for a few more days, publicist Bob Merlis told The Associated Press. Dr. Pierre Gobin, who performed the procedure with another doctor, said: "Mr. Young had a dangerous brain aneurysm and was treated successfully by the minimally invasive neuroradiology team here. He is now resting comfortably ... but we strongly recommend that he not travel for several days." Grammys "I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to make it to Winnipeg for the Junos as I had hoped. I grew up there and was really looking forward to the show as well as spending some time with my old friends and family," Young said. "Thanks to my doctors, I'm feeling a lot better now so I hope I can get a rain check."

WHAT IS THE FIA STUDY? The Familial Intracranial Aneurysm Study, also known as the FIA study, is a collaborative research effort of neurologists and neurosurgeons throughout the United States Canada Australia and New Zealand . The goal of this study is to identify genes that may be important in the development of intracranial aneurysms. This study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke and will involve 475 families with multiple affected family members throughout North America Australia and New Zealand WHAT ARE INTRACRANIAL ANEURYSMS: Intracranial aneurysms are “blisters” which form within the arteries at the base of the brain. A rupture of an aneurysm may lead to subarachnoid hemorrhage. (SAH) Symptoms of SAH include sudden: Severe headache Loss of consciousness Pain in neck, back, eye or face Nausea and vomiting Photophobia (Sensitivity to light) Phonophobia (Sensitivity to sound) The mortality rates of patients suffering from a SAH is 40 – 44%, with many survivors suffering major disability. Most of the deaths from SAH are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding, which is not correctable by medical and surgical intervention. Thus prevention of aneurysm formation is of paramount importance.

    Aneurysm
Aneurysm: a sac formed by localized dilatation of an artery or vein Thoracic aortic aneurysm: In this disorder, the ascending, transverse, or descending part of the aorta widens abnormally. A dissecting aneurysm indicates a hemorrhagic separation in the aortic wall, usually within the medial layer. A saccular aneurysm describes an outpouching of the arterial wall, with a narrow neck. A fusiform aneurysm is a spindle shaped enlargement encompassing the entire aortic circumference. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are most common in men between ages 50 and 70. Some aneurysms progress to serious and eventually lethal complications. Cause: Usually this disorder occurs a s a consequence of atherosclerosis. Other possible causes include infection of the aortic arch and descending segments, congenital defects, trauma, and syphilis. Intimal tear in the ascending aorta as well as hypertension can initiate a dissecting aneurysm. Symptoms: Pain
In a dissecting aneurysm, pain usually occurs suddenly, with a tearing or ripping sensation in the thorax or anterior chest. Pain may extend to the neck, shoulder, lower back, or abdomen but rarely reaches the jaw and arms. Temporary loss of consciousness (syncope)
    Pallor
    Sweating
    Shortness of breath
    Tachycardia
    Cyanosis
    Leg weakness
Transient paralysis Effects of saccular or fusiform aneurysms varies according to the aneurysm's size and location and degree of compression, distortion, or erosion of surrounding structures.

The mediastinal shadow is dominated by the dilation of the aorta. Note that as the descending aorta on the left approaches the diaphragm, it begins to lie more centrally. Better definition of the aortic anatomy is achieved with the CT scan during which iodinated contrast material was injected to opacify the blood pool in the dilated aorta. More...

Cerebral aneurysms are bulging weak spots on the artery in the brain that can cause seizures or even death if they rupture. "There is about a 50 percent mortality rate three months past the first rupture and a 98 percent mortality rate three months after re-rupture,'' Stanford team member and engineering graduate student Neema Hekmat said.
There are enough procedural risks and potential side effects with conventional treatments that some patients choose to live with the possibility of rupture rather than have their aneurysm treated, according to Hekmat.
The Stanford team designed a porous balloon mechanism, which they named Embolune. To use the new invention, a surgeon navigates the balloon to the site of the aneurysm, where it is detached. A hardening polymer substance is then released into the aneurysm space to create a permanent clot and stifle further growth.

Case report Giant aneurysm of the atrial septum associated with premature closure of foramen ovale Constantinos Chrysostomou Rita L Romaguera and Maria M Rodriguez Division of Cardiac Intensive Care, Department of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, USA Department of Pathology, University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, USA Cardiovascular Ultrasound Published Abstract Premature closure or restriction of foramen ovale (PCFO) is a rare congenital anomaly that can lead to a wide spectrum of cardiac malformations. This spectrum of secondary malformations appears to depend on the gestational timing of closure of the foramen ovale and to the degree of restriction. Earlier in the gestation, closure of the foramen has been associated with severe hypoplasia of the left ventricle whereas later closure has been associated with right heart failure and rarely with the formation of an aneurysm of the atrial septum. We describe the case of a 1 day old infant in whom PCFO resulted in severe right heart failure in addition to the formation of a giant atrial septal aneurysm. Published by Terms and conditions

Neil Young out of Junos after brain aneurysm
Last Updated Mon, 04 Apr 2005 13:14:35 EDT CBC Arts NEW YORK - Canadian rock legend Neil Young was treated for a brain aneurysm this week and will miss his much anticipated Juno performance. The 59-year-old musician was treated Tuesday at a New York hospital and remains hospitalized. Neil Young, seen here at the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in March, will not attend the Junos because of illness. (AP Photo) Doctors expect a full recovery, his publicist Bob Merlis told Associated Press. Young had been expected to perform Sunday at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg, the awards ceremony for the Canadian music industry. "I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to make it to Winnipeg for the Junos as I had hoped. I grew up there and was really looking forward to the show as well as spending some time with my old friends and family," Young said. "Thanks to my doctors, I'm feeling a lot better now so I hope I can get a rain check." Dr. Pierre Gobin, who performed the procedure on Young with another doctor, said the brain aneurysm was dangerous, but treated successfully with a "minimally invasive" neuroradiology procedure.

High power view of normal artery wall showing slightly thickened intima, internal elastic lamina ( arrow) and well organized muscularis.
Cerebral arteries have a thinner media and adventitia than arteries elsewhere in the body and no external elastic lamina. (Description By:Margaret Grunnet,M.D. ) (Image Contrib. by:Margaret Grunnet,M.D. UCHC ) Aneurysm Etiology
The berry aneurysm is a small, saclike structure at the branchpoints of arteries with a wall which does not contain a media or internal elastic lamina and therefore can easily rupture during periods of hypertension or stress.
Most commonly ruptures when the patient is 40-60 yrs.
    May also rupture intracerebrally. Pathogenesis
Aneurysms are thought to be due to congenital absence of the media and internal elastic lamina with ballooning as the blood pulsates through the vessels over the years.
