Country Info Andorra Introduction Andorra General Data Andorra Maps Andorra Culture ... Andorra Time and Date Andorra Culture Back to Top Andorra's freedom is traditionally assigned to Charlemagne, who recovered the region from the Muslims in AD 803, and to his son Louis I the Pious, who granted the inhabitants a charter of liberties. Charlemagne's grandson, Charles II, granted Andorra to the counts of Urgel, from whom it passed to the bishops of Urgel. Andorra's seven-century-old dual allegiance to two princes, one in Spain and one in France, originated in the late 13th century in a proprietary quarrel between the Spanish bishops of Urgel and the French heirs to the countship of Urgel. The coprincipality has traditionally had a strong kinship with the region of Catalonia in northern Spain. Andorra's official language is Catalan; its institutions are based in Catalonian law, and a large proportion of the Spanish immigrants in Andorra are Catalan. Most Andorrans are Roman Catholic, and the principality is part of the diocese of the See of Urgel. Nearly two-thirds of the population is urban. Andorra consists of a cluster of mountain valleys whose streams unite to form the Valira River. With only about 3 % of the land cultivable, the traditional economy centred on the pasturing of sheep and the harvesting of modest quantities of tobacco, wheat, olives, grapes, and potatoes. Industry was limited to processing these products and to handicrafts. From the 1950s tourism became one of Andorra's chief industries, exploiting the scenic attractions of the mountains and the area's excellent opportunities for winter sports. Because of the deficiency of customs duties and low or nonexistent taxes, Andorra in the late 20th century also became an valuable international centre of retail trade that attracted millions of shoppers from all over Europe with its duty-free imported consumer goods.

History Culture Until the 1950s, Andorra's population hovered around 6000. Today, only about a quarter of the population - almost two-thirds of whom live in Andorra la Vella and its suburbs - are Andorran nationals. The rest are mainly Spanish, French and Portuguese. The official language is Catalan (Català), a Romance language most closely related to Provençal but with roots in Castilian and French. Local lore has it that everyone in Andorra speaks Catalan, Spanish and French, but there are plenty of people who can't understand more than 10 words of French. Hardly anyone speaks English. Andorran cuisine is mainly Catalan, with strong French and Italian influences. Sauces are typically served with meat and fish. Pasta is also common. Local dishes include cunillo (rabbit cooked in tomato sauce), xai (roast lamb), trinxat (bacon, potatoes and cabbage) and escudella (a stew of chicken, sausage and meatballs). Andorra is one of the oldest nations in Europe, originally established by Charlemagne as a buffer state against the Iberian muslims. As a result of the Paretages
The first semblance of internal government appeared in the early 15th century, with the establishment of the Consell de la Terra , comprising the heads of the principal Andorran families. A relatively poor enclave, its continued existence for the next 300 years was ensured by tax concessions granted by the French and Spanish governments. Eighteenth-century economic reforms in Spain seriously disrupted the Andorran economy and the principality only just managed to survive, largely through astute negotiation with the Spanish and the rapid adoption of new working practices from the Industrial Revolution. The 19th century was a period of great uncertainty, as the Andorrans struggled to maintain their independence and economic viability. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century, with the establishment of road and communication links with France and Spain that Andorra was able to get back on its feet. There was steady economic and political progress throughout the 20th century, although at a much slower pace than was reasonable for a modern European state.
