Intentionality in Ancient Greek Philosophy
But in fact this narrative rests on questionable assumptions. Once the investigation is properly framed, it is clear that philosophical interest in intentionality can be traced back to the very origins of ancient philosophy. Intentionality is treated as involving serious problems already in the early- to mid-fifth century B.C.E., arguably first by Parmenides of Elea, but indisputably by sophists such as Gorgias and Protagoras. Plato thematizes the difficulties and discusses them at length in several dialogues. In later philosophers, we find various theoretical solutions, including appeals to internal representations (Aristotle), to nonexistent objects of thought (early Stoics), and to propositions and other semantic entities (later Stoics). The terminology of intentionality itself can be traced back, through Augustine, to the Stoic theory of vision.

Ancient philosophy
The philosophy of the Greco-Roman world from the sixth century bc to the sixth century ad laid the foundations for all subsequent Western philosophy. Its greatest figures are Socrates (fifth century bc ) and Plato and Aristotle (fourth century bc ). But the enormously diverse range of further important thinkers who populated the period includes the Presocratics and Sophists of the sixth and fifth centuries bc ; the Stoics, Epicureans and sceptics of the Hellenistic age; and the many Aristotelian and (especially) Platonist philosophers who wrote under the Roman Empire, including the great Neoplatonist Plotinus. Ancient philosophy was principally pagan, and was finally eclipsed by Christianity in the sixth century ad , but it was so comprehensively annexed by its conqueror that it came, through Christianity, to dominate medieval and Renaissance philosophy. This eventual symbiosis between ancient philosophy and Christianity may reflect the fact that philosophical creeds in late antiquity fulfilled much the same role as religious movements, with which they shared many of their aims and practices. Only a small fraction of ancient philosophical writings have come down to us intact. The remainder can be recovered, to a greater or lesser extent, by piecing together fragmentary evidence from sources which refer to them.

John J. Cleary John Manoussakis Gary Gurtler, S. J. Editorial Assistant Editors The Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy has existed since 1978. It was founded by Prof. Robert Hahn at Brandeis University under the name of "The Greater Boston Colloquium for Ancient Philosophy." Initially it functioned as a loose coalition of three or four universities in the Boston area, which each sponsored a lecture or two in the series. Scholars who happened to be visiting the area from other parts of the U.S. or abroad delivered impromptu lectures on topics of interest to local philosophers and classicists. In 1984 the Colloquium underwent a 'sea-change' with an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities of substantial funding over a three year period for the so-called 'Greater Boston Project'. The proposal was written by John Cleary and funded by the Division of Education at the NEH for the purpose of promoting undergraduate education in classics and ancient philosophy through lectures, seminars and class visits by leading international scholars in the field. Since the primary purpose of the project was the promotion of education rather than scholarship, the NEH did not provide any money for scholarly publications. But the academic vice-president at Boston College generously provided funding for the publication of Proceedings, which have been published annually since 1985.

    S. Marc Cohen [faculty.washington.edu/ smcohen/arintro.htm] Philosophy Is Part of Daily Life If you think philosophy or, more specifically, ancient philosophy isn't for you, think again. You might be surprised at the number of borrowings from ancient philosophers you run across in daily life. From Protagoras we know that their are two sides to every question. From Diogenes Laertius we hear that appearances are deceitful. Lucretius wrote that nothing can be produced out of nothing. These are easy to understand, empirical bits of wisdom, seemingly different from that vast area of mysticism we call philosophy, but they are, nevertheless, philosophy. If we only had such limited chestnuts from Aristotle and Plato, the greatest masters of philosophy would probably be easier to know, but we don't. We have volumes discussing the meaning of life, reality, knowledge, the good, and much more.

This course will cover Ancient Greek philosophy from the pre-Socratics to the later Hellenistic writers. We will prepare the background for Socrates and Plato by tracing the various historical and intellectual movements that led up to and through the flourishing and downfall of Periclean Athens. A study of Socrates (as represented in Aristophanes' comedy and Plato's early dialogues) will lead to an in-depth reading of Plato's Gorgias Symposium and sections of the Republic . We will approach Aristotle through his 'practical philosophy' as presented in the Nicomachean Ethics . The final sections will discuss the Epicurean, Skeptic, and Stoic movements as well as the work of Cicero. Excerpts from other works of Plato and Aristotle as well as Martha Nussbaum's recent work on Aristotle and Hellenistic philosophy will accompany selected parts of the course.
