LEGIO XX
THE IMPERIAL ROMAN TWENTIETH LEGION
BRINGING ANCIENT ROME TO LIFE
The Twentieth Legion was founded in 1991 to recreate the soldiers of the Roman Army for public demonstrations and living history displays. Our weapons, armor, and accoutrements are all carefully researched, and reconstructed at our own expense. Our troops demonstrate the tactics of the day, and the use of the legionary's various weapons. We can discuss many aspects of Roman army life, and will sometimes spend a day or weekend living like our ancient counterparts did on campaign. We also have a civilian contingent which displays daily life in the ancient Roman world. The group is based in the Washington, D.C. area but will accept Associate Members from anywhere in the world. More information about membership is available through the links below. Following our educational purpose, this website has been constructed mainly as an aid for people who want to make or purchase their own reproduction Roman clothing and military equipment. Within you will find our Handbook for Legionaries and a Civilian Clothing guide, plus patterns, drawings, photographs, and extra "hints" for some items. Ancient clay stamp seals and sealings of Sri Lanka
by Rajah M. Wickremesinghe The world's oldest clay stamp seal had been unearthed in 1990 in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Ur. This city was situated in Southern Iraq along the river Euphrates, below present day Baghdad. The seal is attributed to a king of the 1st dynasty of Babylon circa 2550 BC. Sarah Kielt has in her work expressed the opinion that the various types of seals discovered by archaeologists can be dated from as far back as 6000 BC particularly in the ancient civilisations of the Near East. Roger J. Mathews identifies such seals as stamp, cylinder, and tablet, the last named bearing a seal impression on both sides. A stamp seal could even have been attached to a ring and has only one impression impression as opposed to a cylinder seal which had multiple imprints on it. The latter were utilized by rolling them on to wet clay. Cylinder seals have an aperture running through the centre in its entire length, facilitating being rolled. They could also be worn round the owners neck to make it secure. It is accepted by archaeologists that cylinder seals had been invented in Southern Mesopotamia around 3500 BC. Seals provide important evidence similarly to coins, for the re-construction of ancient socio-economic history of a region. Many active trading and administrative centres of ancient civilisations have yielded seals and sealings of clay in very large numbers. This has enabled the uncovering of their hidden secrets.

Roman Exit Strategy The incipit of a piece from the Palm Beach Post (not Accent, as claimed in this a.m.'s Explorator):
To fall on one's sword is the price one pays for having great power, then losing it. This form of noble suicide is a way of having the last word, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. It works, sometimes, but it is getting rarer and rarer nowadays, and the gesture is usually symbolic.
Bush is a Texan, not a Roman. It was the Romans who set us this stark example.

Flint Ridge contains quarry pits where all of the ancient people of Ohio came to get flint for both tools and weapons. The flint was also a trade item for many of these people. The flint was especially prized by the Hopewell Culture for its quality and beauty. A walk through the site brings home how hard people labored to remove this material from the earth. The forest itself is worthy of attention. The hardwood forest has some magnificent examples of the trees that created a leafy canopy over much of Ohio. Wildflowers in the spring and colors in the fall all are part of the site. Many species of wildlife abound in the forest as well.
The museum at Flint Ridge is built around a restored prehistoric quarry pit and explains both the digging and shaping of flint. The unique geology of the area is also a feature of the displays. The site includes a museum shop that features flint as a gemstone with locally manufactured jewelry. A picnic area with tables, grills, drinking water, and restrooms is available for visitors to the memorial.

Introduction
Ancient times
Introduction The struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one of the most enduring and explosive of all the world's conflicts. It has its roots in the historic claim to the land which lies between the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan river. For the Palestinians the last 100 years have brought colonisation, expulsion and military occupation, followed by a long and difficult search for self-determination and for coexistence with the nation they hold responsible for their suffering and loss. For the Jewish people of Israel, the return to the land of their forefathers after centuries of persecution around the world has not brought peace or security. They have faced many crises as their neighbours have sought to wipe their country off the map. BBC News Online highlights some of the key dates of recent Middle East history and looks back at the origins and development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Back to Top News Sources Privacy

George Long:
Philosophy Of Antoninus
Stoic Philosophy Part I. and the poets Persius and Juvenal, whose energetic language and manly thoughts may be as instructive to us now as they might have been to their contemporaries. Persius died under Nero's bloody reign, but Juvenal had the good fortune to survive the tyrant Domitian and to see the better times of Nerva, Trajan, and Hadrian. His best precepts are derived from the Stoic school, and they are enforced in his finest verses by the unrivalled vigour of the Latin language. [Footnote 1: I have omitted Seneca, Nero's preceptor. He was in a sense a Stoic and he has said many good things in a very fine way. There is a judgment of Gellius (XII. 2) on Seneca, or rather a statement of what some people thought of his philosophy, and it is not favourable. His writings and his life must be taken together, and I have nothing more to say of him here. The reader will find a notice of Seneca and his philosophy in "Seekers after God," by the Rev. F. W. Farrar. Macmillan and Co.] [Footnote 2: Ribbeck has laboured to prove that those Satires which contain philosophical precepts are not the work of the real, but of a false Juvenal, a Declamator. Still the verses exist, and were written by somebody who was acquainted with the Stoic doctrines.]

In religion, Brother Mary Joseph; Abbot and procurator-general of La Trappe, came of a noble and ancient family in Hungary; b. in Lyons, 14 Jan., 1772; d. at Rome, 15 March, 1848. Some historians wrongfully call in question both the place and date of his birth, as also his noble descent. Being of a fiery and chivalrous disposition, he took an active part in the struggles of the monarchies in Europe against the French Revolution , and rose to the rank of lieutenant-general.
