RANTS Anatomy of a WebLog Next Rant Published: 1.26.99 Last Rant Anatomy of a Weblog Weblog. A few months back, I heard the term weblog for the first time. I'm not sure who coined it or where it came from, so I can't properly credit it. Typically, a weblog is a small web site, usually maintained by one person that is updated on a regular basis and has a high concentration of repeat visitors. Weblogs often are highly focused around a singular subject, an underlying theme or unifying concept. I asked on my own personal web site, "Is Camworld a weblog?" A guy named Michal (Sabren) answered. "Yep." I stood back a few steps and realized that yeah, Camworld is a weblog or a microportal. It's got all of the aspects commonly associated with weblogs. It's updated regularly [daily]. It's got a nice, clean easy-to-use design and user interface. It doesn't patronize to the end user, dumbing things down too much. It has a theme [Random Thoughts + Web Design + New Media]. It has a way for the users to interact with each other [ a mailing list ]. It even has somewhat of a community, maintained by repeat visitors and list members who contribute many of the links often found in Camworld.

168. SimpleBits | Anatomy Of An Icon
Handcrafted web sites, pixels and text by Dan Cederholm.

Anatomy of an Icon
A notebook entry from August 23, 2004
can Overcast set. Our goal is to create an icon in two standard sizes: 16x16 and 32x32 (pictured, right). I choose to create the smaller version first, then double the size and clean it up (more on that later).
Set the Canvas and Zoom
So to begin, start with a canvas of 16 pixels by 16 pixels (Photoshop is my image editor of choice). Zoom way in on it
Outline the Form
Note:
Gradients are Key
only within the outline.
Hightlight Edges for Subtle Dimension
Now that we have a base, I like to take white (or a light variation of the base color) and outline the top and left inside edges. Similarly, you could also use a darker color to outline the inside edges of the right and bottom. This adds a really subtle (almost unnoticable) dimension to the icon, making it appear to be slightly rounded off the canvas.
Add the Details
And finally, if the icon will be sitting on a pre-determined background color, you could also add a very light shadow at the bottom and right edges around the icon. It should be offset by at least a pixel, to keep it in line with the light source coming from top left. The steps outlined above will give us the finished 16x16 version of the icon. Now to double it in size.

I nguinal and femoral hernias are the most common problems primary care physicians encounter that require surgical intervention. The treatment of these hernias costs approximately $3.5 billion every year. Untreated or recurrent inguinal hernias are responsible for an incalculable loss of productivity and revenue. Postoperative convalescence also contributes to absence from the work force. A clear understanding of the epidemiology and anatomy of inguinal hernias provides a solid foundation for timely diagnosis and care. Since inguinal herniorrhaphy can be performed using a variety of techniques, the approach can be individualized. This article reviews the available surgical options for herniorrhaphy and the possible complications of these procedures. Epidemiology In the United States, approximately 96 percent of groin hernias are inguinal and 4 percent are femoral. Inguinal hernias are bilateral in as many as 20 percent of affected adults.

LATEST PROGRAMME Thursday 14 February 2002 Anatomy The Greeks thought we were built like pigs, and when Renaissance man first cut his sacred flesh it was an act of heresey. We trace the noble ambitions of medical science to the murky underworld of Victorian grave robbing, we trace 2000 years of anatomical study. From the great showman Vesalius, enthralling the Renaissance Artists in the operating theatres of Italy to the sad and gruesome pursuits of Burke and Hare, Anatomy is mankind's often frustrated attempt to understand the body of man. Joining Melvyn Bragg around the slab will be Ruth Richardson, Andrew Cunningham and Harold Ellis to explore the role of science, religion and art in the quest to understand the male and the female body.

Between the two of us we have over 60 years of plant anatomy teaching and research experience. We felt it would be a shame if the thousands of plant anatomy images we have taken for teaching and research were to retire with us. Therefore, we have put many of these images on this website with free access given to anyone interested. We have made no effort to give a balanced treatment of anatomy topics although most topics are represented. Because much of our research has been on plant secretory structures, this set of image reflects that bias. Physical Therapy Corner: The Temporomandibular Joint
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are among some of the most frequently used joints in the body, allowing us to talk, chew, yawn, swallow and sneeze. The TMJ are located on each side of the cranium. To find your TMJ, place your fingers in front of each ear and open your mouth, you will feel an indentation beneath your finger. The two bones that form the TMJ are the mandible (jaw) located inferiorly, and the temporal bone of the skull (located more superiorly) (see Figure 1). A disc that is connected to the capsule divides the joint cavity into inferior and superior spaces. (see Figure 2) Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is often overlooked. Some of the more common symptoms include clicking or popping with opening or closing of the mouth, pain around the jaw joints, locking of the jaw, headaches and an improper bite (teeth do not fit together properly) (see Figure 3). Most often, TMD can be treated conservatively. However, it is important that a qualified clinician such as a physical therapist, dentist, or orthopedist is consulted for an accurate diagnosis since many conditions can mimic the signs and symptoms common to TMD.
    Movements of the TMJ
Both TMJ must work in coordination in order to allow normal movement to occur. The TMJ allow us to open and close the mouth, protrude, retract, and laterally move the jaw (mandible) right and left. Normally, opening should be about 35-40 mm. A good test to determine normal opening is being able to fit about 2 or 3 knuckles into your mouth. If you cannot open your mouth this wide, you may have a hypomobile (decreased range of motion) TMJ.

THE FUGUE Following is an outline of Hugo Norden's "Foundation Studies in Fugue." During the Spring 2000 semester at Missouri Western State College , I studied counterpoint in my composition class. The next step for me was to study the fugue, a musical form in which counterpoint is used in its most pure way. I wrote this outline first, to get a more intensive reading out of Norden's book, and second, to have a quick reference about the structure of fugues in the future. Hopefully this outline will help you getting interested in fugues and having a good reference source. This outline will not prevent you from reading the book, since it is much more in detail with many music examples. If you like this outline (or don't like it), you can e-mail me and give me some feedback! Chapter I Chapter II Chapter III Chapter VI ...
