Study Claims Clitoris larger Than Thought, a medical article by Althaea Yronwode, from the February 11, 1999, issue of Synapse, the campus newspaper of the University of California at San Francisco Medical School.

THE ANATOMY OF THE CLITORIS
The following essay was written by my daughter, Althaea Yronwode, and appeared in the February 11, 1999, issue of Synapse , the campus newspaper of the University of Califonia at San Francisco Medical School. It appears here by permission. My comments follow.
STUDY CLAIMS CLITORIS LARGER THAN THOUGHT
by Althaea Yronwode
Remember the clitoris? In high school sex education class, it was that small bump at the top of the labia minora. The clitoris was a sort of "mini-penis" which, since it didn't directly get anyone pregnant, was lucky to be mentioned at all. In college level texts, such as Cambell's Biology, the clitoris is shown as a small external structure that does not contact the vagina or urethra. Stedman's Medical Dictionary calls it "a cylindric, erectile body, rarely exceeding 2 cm in length." What these books leave out is something any anatomist knows. The clitoris actually has multiple parts, including two legs (or crura) which extend 9 cm into the pelvis, as well as two bulbs (called "the bulbs of the vestibule") which lie to either side of the vaginal opening within the labia minora. In an article published in the Journal of Urology last summer [998], Australian researcher Helen O'Connell claimed that the clitoris is larger than even anatomists previously thought. In fact, when considered in its entirety, the clitoris may even be bigger than the penis. However, most of it lies hidden within the pelvis.

63. A Pictorial Guide To The Cochlear Fluids
Inner ear anatomy.
http://oto.wustl.edu/cochlea/intro1.htm
Inner Ear Anatomy
Location of the Cochlea
The cochlea is part of the Inner Ear This figure shows the location of the cochlea with respect to the external ear canal. The cochlea is shown here as the blue spiral structure, which resembles a snail. (The word cochlea is derived from the Greek word (kokhlias) for a snail) The cochlea is responsible for converting sounds which enter the ear canal, from mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. This process, known as transduction, is performed by specialized sensory cells within the cochlea. The electrical signals, which code the sound's characteristics, are carried to the brain by the auditory nerve.
The Inner Ear Fluids
The anatomy of the inner ear is dominated by large fluid-filled spaces. As shown in this figure, the inner ear consists of a complex series of tubes, running through the temporal bone of the skull. The bony tubes (sometimes called the bony labyrinth) are filled with a fluid called perilymph . Perilymph is shown both here and in the picture on the opening page colored orange. Within this bony labyrinth is a second series of tubes made out of delicate cellular structures (called the membranous labyrinth) . The fluid inside these membranous structures is called endolymph , and is show both here and in the opening illustration colored blue. The different spaces of the perilymphatic and endolymphatic compartments are each interconnected by a series of ducts, which are described in the next figure. An important feature of the endolymphatic space is that it is

    69. BELL CURVE: Anatomy Of An Analysis
The interpretations proffered in Herrnstein Murray's book, The Bell Curve , are not supported by reanalysis of their data.

    Site Map Notes Page Rankings
    Abstract
Dr. Claudia Krenz This is a web page about a logistic regression, the first one interpreted in The Bell Curve The Bell Curve continues to generate discussion and influence U.S. social and educational policy. Its conclusions were based on the authors' interpretations of the results of 100 separate statistical analyses (logistic regressions). Although printouts from all analyses were included in one of the book's appendices, the authors were criticized for publishing them without having earlier submitted them to peer review. Despite theseand many otherobjections, there has been no investigation of the published statistical analyses on which the book's conclusions were based. The same simple statistical model was used throughout: 3 variablesscores on the Armed Services Qualifying Test (AFQT), a socioeconomic status index (SES), and AGE. This model was used to predict 100 different outcomes for different subgroups of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' venerable National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). HM argue that AFQT scores are a measure of intelligence. Almost all their analyses were logistic regressions, including the one examined here, the first discussed in the book. HM knew not to interpret their data analysis without examining the fit of their modelhere, the 3 above mentioned variables. HM wrote that "the usual measure of goodness of fit for multiple regressions [is] R-square" (p. 617). Based on the R-square statistic, HM concluded their model adequately fit their data. Murray, however, subsequently learned otherwise, later referring to R-square as "ersatz and unsatisfactory" in this context (1995). Another way to examine the fit of a statistical model in a logistic regression is the classification table, an intuitively obvious cross-tabulation of the predicted status of cases by their actual status: here, a cross-tabulation of whether cases predicted by HM's 3-variable model to be above or below the poverty level actually were or were not.

    70. The Anatomy Of A Search Engine
The definitive paper by Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page describing PageRank, the algorithm that was later incorporated into the Google search engine.
    http://www-db.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html
The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine
Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page Computer Science Department, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305
    Abstract
In this paper, we present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at http://google.stanford.edu/
To engineer a search engine is a challenging task. Search engines index tens to hundreds of millions of web pages involving a comparable number of distinct terms. They answer tens of millions of queries every day. Despite the importance of large-scale search engines on the web, very little academic research has been done on them. Furthermore, due to rapid advance in technology and web proliferation, creating a web search engine today is very different from three years ago. This paper provides an in-depth description of our large-scale web search engine the first such detailed public description we know of to date.
Apart from the problems of scaling traditional search techniques to data of this magnitude, there are new technical challenges involved with using the additional information present in hypertext to produce better search results. This paper addresses this question of how to build a practical large-scale system which can exploit the additional information present in hypertext. Also we look at the problem of how to effectively deal with uncontrolled hypertext collections where anyone can publish anything they want.

Testicles (testes) are the male gonads. Two of these stuctures are found in the scrotum where they produce the male gametes, the spermatozoa, and the male hormone, testosterone . The testes are suspended from the body by the spermatic cord which contains the ductus deferens or vas deferens, testicular blood and lymph vessels and nerves.
The testicles are paired spheroid structures, (4 to 5 x 2.5 x 3 centimeters, 10.5-14 grams) housed in the scrotum with the dual function of producing sperm and hormones. The scrotum serves as a protective covering and serves to maintain the testicular temperature about 2 degrees below abdominal temperature. Each testicle is covered by a sac derived from the peritoneum acquired during its descent from the abdomen during fetal development . This sac has a an outer parietal layer and an inner visceral layer. Under this, each testis is surrounded by a thick capsule of collagenous connective tissue . The posterior surface of the sac is thickened to form the mediastinum from which septa extend into the gland to separate it into about 250 lobules. Each lobule is filled with with 1-4 seminiferous tubules, connective tissue, vascular supply, lymphatic vessels nerves and interstitial cells.

The eye is a complex optical system - very similar to a camera. Vision begins when light enters the eye through the cornea, a powerful focusing surface. From there, it travels through clear aqueous fluid, and passes through a small aperture called the pupil. As muscles in the iris relax or constrict, the pupil changes size to adjust the amount of light entering the eye. Light rays are focused through the lens , and proceed through a clear jelly-like substance in the center of the eye called vitreous, which gives it form and shape. When light rays finally land on the retina, the part of the eye similar to film in a camera, they form an upside-down image. The retina converts the image into an electrical impulse that travels along the optic nerve to the brain, where it is interpreted as an upright image.

Why have a web page on foreskin anatomy?
    Education
A surprising number of people in the US have never seen an intact penis. They have no idea what a foreskin is, what it does, what it looks like, or what it's good for. This is especially true for the older generations since the circumcision rate in the US was once as high as 95%. It is now dropped to 60% for the US as a whole and 30% in the western states. In most other western countries, the infant circumcision rate is near zero. Many doctors in the US have no idea what a foreskin does or what it is good for. These doctors know only about the " problems " guys can have with their foreskins and know of no solutions other than circumcision. No anatomy textbook that I've ever seen has an accurate diagram of what the foreskin is or how it works, although I havn't looked lately (if there is one, I'd like to know). The following pictures are intended show a lot more. Preventing Circumcision
I hope that once people are educated about the male anatomy, they will stop circumcising their male infants.
