Anaconda Adoption Program click here Main goal of the project One of the main challenges that one faces to really understand the life cycle and private life of long lived animals is to obtain funding to study the population long enough to get the complete picture. Most financial institutions would grant research for one year or two relatively easy. They could extend the funds for three, four, at the most, for five years in the best case scenario. I feel quite lucky that I have managed to keep this study running for 11 years now getting funds from different sources. However, 11 years is not even half of what I estimate the life span of anacondas is and I am yet a long way to understand the life of these animals the way I would like to. Scope of the project The first step would be to continue the study in the population that I have worked on for 11 years and where I have marked more than 900 animals so far. Only continuation of this key population will allow us to draw a complete picture of what the life cycle of the anaconda is like and eventually produce well informed guide lines for its conservation ( click here for a summary of this project Should the funds allow it, I would launch a more ambitious project studying the biology of the anacondas in the rest of South America. There are four species in different countries whose biology is not known almost at all. If we get enough funds, I would go exploring pilot populations of these species in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and Ecuador in order to compare life history and get a better understanding of the group as a whole (

Courage as a Christian
by Raymond T. Exum
Crystal Lake Church of Christ, Crystal Lake, Illinois
December 29, 1996 I would like to encourage you this morning to look with me at the book of Luke in the New Testament. In Luke chapter 9 our Lord spoke on the subject of courage. It would be interesting to know how much courage we as Christians have when it comes to living the Christian life. I suppose we really cannot know for certain about our courage until the time comes for it to be demonstrated. Yet courage is an important part of the Christian way of life. Courage is even respected out there in the world. Let me give you an example of the kind of courage that some people are required to have. I want to read from the official Handbook of the United States Peace Corps. I want to read what it says that a Peace Corp volunteer has to do if he is attacked by an anaconda snake. The anaconda is the largest snake in the world. You might think it was the boa constrictor. The anaconda is in the family with the boa constrictor, but it is larger than that. The anaconda snake grows to be 35 feet long and can weigh about 400 pounds. For the volunteers that are assigned to the Amazon Jungle, there is a section in the Peace Corp Handbook on what to do if you are attacked by an anaconda snake. There are 10 steps here that you are supposed to follow:
  • If you are attacked by an anaconda, do not run. The snake is faster than you are.

That may be true, but when speaking in terms of the new thriller Anaconda, a more fitting tagline would be "When you're laughing your ass off, you can't scream," for this inane jungle adventure is nothing less than Congo '97. Now, if one is making a movie about snakesgiant, man-eating snakes, no lessone would think that the first order of business would be to come up with convincing snake effects. Apparently, no one involved in Anaconda thought hard enough. The animatronic snakes look like giant rubber hoses with tire treads. Llosa also uses some "state-of-the-art" computer animation for some shots of the snake striking and wrapping around its prey, but the effects are obviously computer generated; the seams are quite visible. The phony snakes are more than enough to ruin the film, but the true awfulness of Anaconda doesn't stop there. Two wordsJon Voight. As the nominal human villain of the piece, he is a complete embarrassment. If his unconvincing accent (alternately overdone and underdone) isn't bad enough, there are his hilarious leering gazes at Lopez. If that isn't enough, there are his "villainous" looks, clenched teeth and eyes in full bulge, during the physical scenes. The rest of the cast isn't all that great, either, but their work is downright Oscar-caliber compared to Voight's laughably overwrought turn.

Giant Anacondas Nearly everyone is familiar with the anaconda of the Amazon Basin, but how large can an anaconda be? Considerably larger than the scientifically accepted length, according to the Indians of the jungle. They tell stories of a creature called sucuriju gigante , reputed to be an anaconda of aquatic habits and immense size. In 1907, Major Percy Fawcett, noted explorer of the Amazon, recounted not once, but twice encounters with the Sucuriju. The snake's first mention in Fawcett's memoirs has been recorded thusly: "The manager at Yorongas told me he had killed an anaconda fifty-eight feet long in the Lower Amazon." Although Fawcett confessed that initially he thought this an exaggeration, he placed stock in its validity after an encounter of his own. We were drifting along in the sluggish current not far below the confluence of the Rio Negro when ... there appeared a triangular head and several feet of undulating body. It was a giant anaconda. I sprang for my rifle ... and hardly waiting to aim smashed a .44 soft-nosed bullet into its spine ... As far as it was possible to measure, a length of forty-five feet lay out of the water, and seventeen feet in it, making a total length of sixty-two feet ... A penetrating foetid odour emanated from the snake, probably its breath, which is believed to have a stupefying effect ... The Brazilian Boundary Commission told me of one killed in the Rio Paraguay exceeding eighty feet in length!

cryptids profile forum chat ... links Sucuriju Gigante By Aaron Justice Webster's Dictionary states that an anaconda is a tropical snake that reaches about 30 feet in length and crushes it's victims. This is the accepted scientist view, except for the crushing part; anacondas suffocate their prey. However, natives tell tales of a creature called the Sucuriju, a giant monster resembling a snake but much larger. These are the tales that form the enigma of Sucuriju Gigante, the giant anaconda of South America.
When the Pope gave part of South America to Spain and the other to Portugal in the Treaty of Tordesilla, the Spaniards explored this great continent of tropical forests. They came back with stories of enormous snakes which they called matora, or "bull eater". Some reports detailed them reaching over 80 feet in length. Colonel Percy Fawcett, who was sent to map out parts of the Amazon, claimed to have bagged a 62 foot long anaconda. As an officer of the Royal Engineers he was to write down his information meticulously. As he stated in his diary: "I sprang for my rifle as the creature began to make it's way up the bank and smashed a .44 bullet into its spine. At once there was a flurry of foam and several heavy thumps against the boats keel, shaking us as though we had run on a snag. We stepped ashore and approached the creature with caution. As far as it was possible to measure, a length of 45 feet lay out of the water and 17 feet lay in the water, making it a total length of 62 feet. It's body was not thick, not more than 12 inches in diameter, but it had probably been long without food."

    • The Green Anaconda Eunectes murinus ), which has been reported at up to 10 metres (32.8 feet) in length (although most are considerably smaller). Although shorter than the longest recorded species, the Reticulated Python , it is considerably heavier. In fact, it is the heaviest snake species in existence. It can weigh 250 kg (551 pounds) and have a girth of more than 30 cm (11.8 inches) in diameter. Females are larger than males. These are found mainly in northern South America, in Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, northern Bolivia, northeast Peru, Guyana, and Trinidad. The Yellow Anaconda Eunectes notaeus ), which reaches a relatively smaller maximum length of 3 metres (9.8 feet). These live further south in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, western Brazil, and northeast Argentina.

    Selecting Your Snake
There are approximately 2000 distinct species of snakes and they are found on all the continents except Antartica. Snakes are attractive and intriguing to watch as they make their way gracefully around their enclosure. Pet appeal:
Many snakes make good pets because they are quite docile, easy to hold, and easy to care for. Snakes are very clean, virtually odorless, quiet, and other than the large boas and pythons, they don't eat much so they are inexpensive to feed. There is a wide variety of non-venemous snakes to choose from for a pet. When deciding which snake or snakes are for you, keep the following basic considerations in mind:
    • How much do you want to spend? How much space do you have for it? What type of disposition do you want in your pet? How hardy is it and how easy is it to feed? What color, shape and size do you want and is that snake readily available?
Many snakes are protected so check with authorities in your area on laws governing your choice of snake. Venomous snakes should not be kept as pets, they are dangerous! They can be found anywhere that non-venomous snakes are also found, though there are more venomous snakes in Southeast Asia than anywhere else. Rattlesnakes are found only in the western hemispere. All snakes that live in the sea are venomous.

I have pet peeves about monster movies these days. Some of them have shown up in other movies that I have really loved, such as Jurassic Park, but I had never seen anything like that kind of movie in my life. It had glorious and original visual effects that looked completely realistic, but nowadays, a movie thinks it just needs those visual effects to be good. But it can't anymore. Such is the case of Anaconda, the new film by Luis Llosa. Anaconda is a visually enticing movie with some good special effects, but as for acting, dialogue, and plot, this movie stinks.
Anaconda opens with some unusual scene which I'm not sure what it has to do with the rest of the plot. I guess it just shows what someone is willing to do to get away from an Anaconda. We don't see the giant snake just yet, but we know what he is running from, mainly because of the trailers and ads. Next, we jump to a group of people filming a documentary on a tribe of natives, or "people of the mist." They arrive to the location and they all board a barge to travel down the Amazon River. We don't get to know the characters much, in fact, we hardly get to know them at all. But it isn't important in a film like this. A monster movie always has to have a few characters that we don't care about (in this case, all of them) just so they can be killed by the monster.
The film involves the director of the documentary, Terri (Jennifer Lopez, fresh off Selena), and her crew. They include an anthropologist, Steven (Eric Stoltz), a cameraman, Danny (Ice Cube), production manager Denise (Kari Wuhrer), and a couple others who captain the ship. While forging down the river, they happen upon a shipwrecked Paul Serone (Jon Voight). He says that he has seen the tribe whom they are looking for for their documentary. They agree to follow his advice and forge ahead. However, an accident occurs on board, involving scuba gear and a poisonous wasp. Because of this, they want to get to a hospital as soon as possible. Serone pretends to want to help the victim, and tells them to continue down the river.

The word "anaconda" is derived from the Tamil word "anaikolra" meaning "elephant killer". Known to the early Spanish settlers as "matatoro" or "bull killer", the anaconda is the largest of the boas.
Heaviest but not longest: While the Green Anacondas are the heaviest the snake, they are not the longest. That record is currently held by the reticulated python . Growing up to 9 metres in length, Green Anacondas can weigh a hefty 250kg and have a girth of more than 12 inches in diameter. Females are larger than the males.
Also known as the water boa, anacondas are the most aquatic of the boas. Primarily nocturnal, they spend most of their time in the water. Although their large size may make them appear rather sluggish on land, anacondas are good swimmers and in water they can move at surprising speed, both on the surface and underwater. Anacondas can also remain completely submerged for 10 minutes.

Perfect MST3k fodder. Cons You will actually have wasted precious moments of your life watching this drivel. The Bottom Line Not worth the cardboard box it came in. Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot. Jon Voight. Sean Connery. Robert DeNiro. Dustin Hoffman. Kathleen Turner. Arnold Schwarzennegar. What do all of these people have in common? They're critically acclaimed and successful actors who, for some reason at the height of their success, decided to step out of their niche into a "different" role and movie genre in the hopes of showing their range. But instead of pleasantly surprising everyone the way John Travolta did when he starred in "Pulp Fiction," they wound up shocking the audiences and getting egg on their faces. A lot of it. And not the tolerable kind, but the really yucky, runny, undercooked, yellowy, messy, dribbly kind that makes you want to upchuck the moment you see it. Anaconda is Jon Voight's "Hook," his "Baby Geniuses," his "Avengers." This was the one bad movie that he had no business being in, but probably decided to become a part of to prove to everyone that he could do a film like this. But it was a bad move. I don't care what Roger Ebert says this movie was fartingly bad. Hell, I'll confront the chubby, li'l guy myself and ask him what he was smoking when he gave it such a glowing review!

Only now does my guide slow down a bit, clearly relieved to be back in his own domain. "So, is that a normal crowd for a weekday?" I ask, cocking my head upwards as Howell leads me past a series of offices and classroomlike work areas, stacks of rocks and tubing, and cages swarming with baby-pink rats. "I wouldn't really know," he shrugs. "I seldom go up where the people are. I prefer to hang back with the reptiles."

HOUSTON - In a case of life imitating art, a Houston movie theater has shut down while workers hunt for an 8-foot snake spotted by a maintenance worker. Among the movies playing at the 16-screen Tinseltown theater is the horror-thriller "Anacondas." Terrell Falk, a spokeswoman for Cinemark USA Inc., said the worker saw a snake about a week ago that he described as thick as a man's arm slithering along a wall. "As soon as he saw it, he left," she said. "I think everyone who was working left." When theater owners heard of it, they closed the place and brought in snake experts. "We have looked throughout the theater and we haven't found a snake yet," Ramon Cardenas, owner of Critter Control of Houston, a company that specializes in wildlife control, told the Houston Chronicle. It's unclear if the animal escaped or remains inside. Based on the description provided by the janitor, the snake people believe it could be a Burmese python. Cardenas said he set up temperature-controlled traps in hopes. Snakes prefer warm temperatures and are sensitive to vibrations, office manager Michelle Pustejovsky said, so the heat has been turned up in the building.

'Anacondas' snakes its way from the Amazon to Borneo
    By Jane Horwitz
August 28, 2004 "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid"
(PG-13, 1 hr., 33 min.) True, it is formulaic and predictable, with bad jokes, baldly contrived tension and few truly scary bits, but "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid" is kinda fun, and many teens will enjoy the roller-coaster ride. Those with reptile or insect phobias should stay away, though, as the movie roils with gigantic (computer-generated, but convincing) man-eating anacondas. It doesn't overdo the gory bits, staying largely within PG-13 range. Huge snake jaws loom up from the river and grab at victims, but apart from sudden moves and occasional crunching sounds, very little of the killing occurs on camera. Other creepy critters include an alligator, a nasty spider and leeches. Corpses, skeletons, understated human violence, mild sexual innuendo and rare profanity also earn the rating. The first "Anaconda" (PG-13, 1997) was set in the Amazon. This installment follows a group of scientists and money mavens for a drug company into the jungles of Borneo in search of a rare orchid that may hold the key to an anti-aging serum. The hunky captain (Johnny Messner) of the rattletrap boat they hire thinks the rainy season is a bad time to travel, but the lead scientist (Matthew Marsden) pays well. But nature pays back.
