Gwazi is Busch Gardens Tampa Bay's mammoth double wooden coaster. It is also the Southeast's largest and fastest double wooden roller coaster boasting more than 1.25 million board feet of lumber and over 2 million bolted connections. Named after a fabled lion with a tiger's head, Gwazi races riders through almost 7,000 feet of track and is two distinct coasters intertwined:
  • The Gwazi Tiger has an element that gives riders a slalom sensation more like a bobsled than a wooden coaster.
The Gwazi Lion's highlight is a seemingly continuous number of spirals.

You must be over 48 inches tall to ride Gwazi and other restrictions may apply.

The name SheiKra evokes the power and speed of an African hawk as it twists and plunges - giving riders a 70 mph, adrenaline-pumping experience like no other. At 200 feet, SheiKra now takes the crown as Florida's tallest roller coaster. This thrill machine is also the tallest dive coaster in the world and the first of its kind to incorporate an Immelmann loop (a rolling maneuver), a second, 138-foot dive into an underground tunnel and a water-feature finale. SheiKra offers three minutes of over-the-edge excitement on more than half a mile of steel track.
SheiKra serves as the centerpiece of Busch Gardens' newly themed Stanleyville area, which also includes the new 500-seat, indoor/outdoor Zambia Smokehouse. The restaurant is situated on the coaster's perimeter, allowing guests to be a part of the action while dining.
You must be 54 inches tall to ride SheiKra. For safety, certain physical restrictions may apply.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - An amusement park manager was found guilty Monday of reckless homicide in the death of a woman who was thrown from a ride last year, but he avoided a murder conviction. Charles Stan Martin was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of June Carol Alexander, 51, who died in March 2004 after her safety harness broke on the ride, sending her tumbling 60 feet to the ground. Before beginning deliberations, the judge asked the jury to consider three charges - second-degree murder, reckless homicide or criminally negligent homicide. The jury took only two hours to reach its verdict. Martin faces up to four years in prison when he's sentenced in July. He could have received up to 25 years in prison if convicted on the murder charge.

Amusement parks such as Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Knott's Berry Farm, etc., are a favorite form of entertainment for families and young people in California. Millions of people from all over the country come to California specifically to go to amusement parks. Amusement park owners are consistently working to out-do their competitors to increase consumer popularity and revenue. New roller coasters and other amusement park "thrill" rides are cropping up all the time, advertised as being the world's fastest, highest and scariest. Unfortunately, these rides are giving riders a lot more than they pay for, including broken or bloody noses, broken ribs and limbs, whiplash, brain hemorrhages, paralysis and even death. The increase in thrill ride accidents is alarming as hundreds of people suffer minor to serious injuries each year. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that emergency room injuries from amusement park rides rose almost 87 percent in the last five years. The investigation conducted by the CPSC into these injuries concluded that several factors are at fault in these injuries - consumer behavior, operator behavior, mechanical failure, and design defects or limitations. While there may be some question over who is blame for the accident, there is no question that those injured while riding amusement park attractions suffer pain and loss because of their injuries.

I
t was a balmy morning in Central Florida, and snowflakes fell on Joe Rohde's shoulders like magic dust in a fairy tale. Unusual weather for Orlando, but nothing outlandish for Disney World. Standing on a stage, surrounded by a costumed cast of Disney characters, Rohde warned a gathering of reporters that more wintry conditions were to come. "We're going to take you high and it's going to get very cold," he said. "And you're going to see a large shaggy creature that you can only see one place in the world."
That place, said Rohde, one of the leading designers for Walt Disney Imagineering, was Expedition Everest, a roller coaster-style ride that would take visitors to the rooftop of the Himalayas, where the snow falls in blankets and the legendary abominable snowman dwells. When Rohde finished, cameras flashed, rousing band music blared from speakers, and Mickey and Minnie began to dance. The grinning figure of Goofy rose above the stage in a mountaineering outfit, an artificial blizzard swirling around him, and called through the clamor in his yuck-yuck voice, "Hey, everybody! Brrrr. It's cold!" It was all quite a production for an attraction that wasn't scheduled to open for another three years.

Amputee Ride Policy Up To Parks
By RANDY DIAMOND rdiamond@tampatrib.com
Published: Jul 21, 2005
TAMPA - The case of an 8- year-old amputee who was barred by Busch Gardens on Monday from going on several of the theme park's rides highlights the lack of universal standards for access to amusement park rides. Jessica Rogers, whose legs were amputated shortly after she was born because of a rare medical condition, was turned away by ride attendants from a children's boat ride only 6 inches deep, a log flume ride and a river rapids ride. ``I wouldn't take my kids on high roller coasters,'' said Jessica's mother, Phyllis. ``I'm afraid of them myself.'' But Rogers, who is in Tampa this week because of Jessica's participation in swimming and track meets at the National Disability Championships, said she knows her daughter's capabilities and that Jessica has been able to ride on similar attractions in amusement parks in her home state of Virginia without any problems. Amusement park safety experts said Rogers has bumped into a gray area in the amusement park industry.

Gravitron Rides to Get More Stringent Safety Inspection
June 9, 2004
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Wisdom Industries Ltd.are announcing a revised safety inspection program for all types of Gravitron amusement rides. The Gravitron amusement ride is a whirling cylinder which uses centrifugal force to hold riders to their seats as the seats rise, giving the illusion that the floor is dropping out. The ride is also called the Starship, Old Blue, and Trip to Mars. There are approximately 190 such rides in the U.S. and Canada. On April 2, 2004, at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition in Florida, a wall panel of the Gravitron ride gave way, ejecting three riders. Seven people were injured, including two bystanders who were hit by debris. Injuries included broken bones, concussions, and bruises. A 16-year-old girl ejected from the ride was critically injured. CPSC’s investigation of this incident and its work with the ride manufacturer, Wisdom Industries Ltd., resulted in a revised safety inspection program to prevent future incidents. In brief, some of the elements of the inspection program include:
  • Inspect welds and steel components for cracks or breaks.

180. Howard Fienberg: A Few Accidents Don't Mean Amusement Parks Are Unsafe, Buffalo
So why does the minimal problem of amusement park ride accidents cause so much public panic? Probably because of our sense of personal control.
http://www.hfienberg.com/clips/rollercoasters2.htm
The Buffalo News
A few accidents don't mean amusement parks are unsafe
by Howard Fienberg
June 16, 2002 Roller coasters always provide thrills and chills, but the last few summers have brought some high-profile spills as well. Memorial Day weekend saw the deaths of two people at Six Flags amusement parks, an employee in Georgia and a passenger in Denver. Deaths are rare, but injuries are not. Last summer, 22 people on a roller coaster at Six Flags in Massachusetts were injured. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), injuries from all amusement park rides rose from 7,700 in 1993 to 10,580 in 2000, a 37 percent increase. U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., who often pushes a National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act, has complained that "we are living on borrowed time" because the CPSC is "forbidden by law from investigation." While the federal government oversees "mobile-site" rides (e.g., a traveling carnival), it does not regulate "fixed-site" amusement park rides (e.g., Six Flags or Disneyland). Of the injury estimates for 2000, 6,594 came on fixed-site rides, while only 3,985 were from mobile-site rides. But just because federal inspectors are not looking over our shoulder on Space Mountain, does that necessarily mean that no one else is either? According to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), every ride is subject to either state or municipal regulation, as well as the intense scrutiny of private insurance companies.
