21. Exhibits Collection -- Amusement Park Physics
This interactive exhibit explores how the laws of physics play a role in the design of amusement park rides. Activities in the exhibit invite visitors to design a roller coaster and determine the outcomes of bumper car collisions.

The goal of the Teachers' Lab is to provide teachers and educators with a deeper understanding of commonly taught math and science concepts. Many of the Labs are based upon professional development workshops broadcast on the Annenberg/CPB Channel
You've bought your ticket and boarded the roller coaster. Now you're barreling down the track at 60 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns and completing death-defying loops. Your heart is in your throat and your stomach is somewhere near your shoes. The only thing separating you from total disaster is a safety harness...but are you really in danger? The designers of the roller coaster carefully crafted this thrilling ride to be just that, but you're actually in less danger than you think. You face a greater threat of injury playing sports or riding a bike than you do on a park ride. Amusement park rides use physics laws to simulate danger, while the rides themselves are typically very safe.

The fastest roller coasters now go over 100 mph. The turns and twists are dizzying, which raises the question: Are the g-forces too much for a human being to handle? With all the speed and twisting, can these rides potentially cause damage to the brain? There have been case reports of people with bleeds in the brain from amusement park rides, but the good news is that many studies have now shown that even the nastiest looking coasters cannot harm you. Dr. Robert Fryer, a neurologist, says, "There doesn’t seem to be a lot in the medical literature to support that there’s a lot of injuries that are sustained based on the number of rides that occur." Still, experts are concerned that for smaller kids, these rides may be too much and they should not try to sneak on board. [dr. Robert fryer/neurologist]

31. Commission Files Complaints Following Fatal Accidents On Amusement
Since then, CPSC s authority to inspect amusement park rides and to require correction of hazardous defects has been contested routinely in court.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 29, 1980 Release # 80-032
Commission Files Complaints Following Fatal Accidents On Amusement Park Rides
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 29) The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission late yesterday issued formal complaints involving amusement ride accidents at three major amusement parks located in Texas, California and Illinois. A two-count complaint was issued against the owner and the operator of the "Skyride" at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in connection with a fatal accident which occurred on October 21, 1979. The second complaint was issued against the Marriott Corporation which owns and operates "Willard's Whizzer" roller coasters at its Great America amusement parks located in Santa Clara, California (near San Jose), and Gurnee, Illinois (north of Chicago). A fatal accident occurred on March 29, 1980, at the Great America park in Santa Clara. Both complaints charge that the corporations failed to report to CPSC in a timely fashion as is required by law potentially hazardous defects in the rides and previous accidents which have caused injuries to consumers. The law permits the Commission to seek civil penalties of as much as $500,000 from a company which fails to report to CPSC a defect that could create a substantial product hazard. The complaint against the State Fair of Texas also seeks correction of existing defects in the Skyride.

Physics of Popular Amusement Park Rides

Abstract
When one enters an amusement park, one walks into a world of physics. All the rides are governed by the laws and equations formulated by physicists over a course of hundreds of years. This project focuses on rides that use the phenomenon of free fall to gain the thrilling effects that riders get on such rides as the Skycoaster and the Free Fall. The questions raised are which laws govern the behavior of these rides, and how safe they really are.
To find the answers to these questions, one must indulge into the world of physics. The hypotheses, or expected results, are that kinematics and conservation of energy are the prominent factors influencing the motions of the rides, and that the degree of understanding of physics that the designers and builders have effects the safety of the rides.
Kinematics is a set of equations that show the changes an object undergoes between its initial and final positions, such as velocity, acceleration and displacement. The law of Conservation of Energy states that energy is neither gained nor lost, it is conserved. Although the kinetic energy (energy of motion) and potential energy (stored energy) may fluctuate, the total energy (PE + KE) remains the same.
An object that is in free fall is subject to only one force acting upon it. This is the force of gravity, which causes a constant acceleration towards the Earth's surface of 9.8 meters/second^2. Because gravity is the only force acting on objects in free fall, objects of all masses fall at the same rate. Rides such as the Skycoaster and the Free Fall use this behavior to give riders the enjoyment of feeling weightless for a period of time. In Amusement park rides, like in all other motion requiring energy on earth, energy is conserved.

Amusement Park Rides: Risking Your Life for a Day of Fun?
Imagine you and your family and friends, enjoying a day of fun at an amusement park - can you taste that fresh cotton candy? How about all the fun you're having playing the game where you have to throw the coins into the fish bowls? You stop and think how fortunate you are to be able to share this time with your loved ones.
Your children ask if they can go on this really cool ride - a rollercoaster that whips you around at a very fast speed. Sure! you say. Your kids have to be "this tall", the sign says. No problem. You're all seated, then the motor starts and the ride begins. Up, up, and turn to the left... You begin to feel the rush of excitement - all the way down to your stomach. Everyone screams as the ride descends to the next dip in the tracks. Around you go, you're pushed into the person sitting next to you...forced to lean to the right. People scream again, including you. The track levels off, but something doesn't seem right. People are still screaming.
What's going on? Your first thought is of your family, your children. You look for your kids - they're crying. The ride comes to a stop at the gate. You step off and run toward the seats where your kids are sitting, and your heart sinks. On one turn during the ride, a child had got pushed up too far, and the lap belt didn't protect him as it was designed to. The color red was everywhere. Your children reach for you, and you give them the tightest hug ever imagined. Your family was spared from harms way, but not from the impact this tragic accident has made on their lives...it's something you will never, ever forget.

The Honorable Edward Markey
2108 Rayburn Building
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515-2107 Dear Representative Markey: Consumers Union is pleased to endorse your bill, HR 2500, the “National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act.” We applaud your leadership in seeking to prevent future amusement park deaths and injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) has demonstrated its ability to identify and prevent injuries from many consumer products including mobile amusement park rides. The National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act will grant the CPSC the same scope of authority to act as a clearinghouse for information and protect against unreasonable risks of harm on fixed-site rides that it currently retains for carnival rides that are moved from site to site. We believe the CPSC’s regulatory authority over fixed location amusement parks must be restored. The death just this month (June 14) of a 4-year-old on a fixed park amusement ride – “Mission: SPACE” – in Florida, only underscores the importance or restoring to CPSC the ability to review events at fixed site parks. The current loophole in the law that prevents federal safety experts from participating in this investigation is a serious barrier to effective safety oversight. Federal oversight is crucial to the coordination about, and prevention of, deaths and injuries associated with fixed site amusement parks. Further, the patchwork of state laws some strong, others weak or nonexistent make it even more critical that the CPSC have the ability to exercise authority over these sites. As a federal agency, the CPSC is in a position to ensure that this recent, terrible tragedy is treated not just as a local concern or a concern for one park or owner, but also as an opportunity to look at safety issues that apply in every amusement park with rides that share characteristics of “Mission: SPACE.”
