Amnesia
name Bill status educator age 20s Question - Question from thirteen year old student: If language is a learned behaviour, how come people who experience amnesia don't forget how to talk? Amnesia is not total you do not forget everything. Indeed, it is typical to forget the most recent of events, while memory of long-ago events is unimpaired. I doubt, additionally, that language ability is as closely linked to general memory as the question implies. None of us remembers any event from the age at which we learned to talk and learned our basic vocabulary, and it is possible by cerebrovascular accident to utterly lose the ability to talk without losing any of one's memory. Jonah Winter:
AMNESIA
Winner of the 2003 FIELD Poetry Prize
"Jonah Winter resides in the Hotel Amnesia, the Hotel of Starsand though he's a comedian, his room is one along the corridor of the wistful, urbane dreamers: Joseph Cornell, Jean Cocteau. Anais Nin, Charles Simic. At the heart of his method is the list, almost verbless: his marvelous catalogues place unlikely things side by side, creating within the frame of the poem the tantalizing windows of the city of dream."
Mark Doty "Through revelations, paradoxes, and the kind of startling connections we cherish in dreams, Jonah Winter's poetry gives us the secret lives of our surroundings, lovingly and beautifully rendered." Nancy Willard

ABC Daytime dramas are the domain of a peculiar niche demographic: the unemployed, half-baked college students killing time between lectures and those who care enough about The Bold and the Beautiful to shamefacedly entrust this secret to TiVo. Soaps have been mocked, scorned, and symbolically quarantined from "real" TV since their inception; even the most accomplished soap stars have to make do with paltry Daytime Emmys, which I suspect are milk-chocolate replicas of the real thing, wrapped in gold foil. Certain actors have successfully fled the glycerin ghetto (Anne Heche, Kelly Ripa, even

http://www.memory.rutgers.edu/memory/html/q2.html
What is amnesia? Another severe type of memory disorder is called retrograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is also usually caused by brain injury or disease. In this condition, individuals have trouble remembering events in their life that occurred prior to the brain injury. These people do not lose all their memories. Usually, the memory loss is worst for events just before the injury; events from long ago are more likely to be safe. For example, if a man developed retrograde amnesia in middle age, he might have excellent memory for his childhood, nearly complete memories of young adulthood, and progressively less memory for the years leading up to his brain injury. There have been reports of persons with memory disorders being unable to remember that they are married, if the marriage took place shortly before the brain injury that caused the amnesia. Currently, there is no known way to restore memories which have been lost through retrograde amnesia. Usually, when a person has a brain injury resulting in a memory disorder, there is some degree of both anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Often, the anterograde amnesia is more severe and more difficult to deal with. For this reason, scientists and doctors often just use the word "amnesia" to refer to a general condition involving severe anterograde amnesia and some degree of retrograde amnesia.

matter how unpalatable, needs to be studied, contextualised, understood. Texts are a valuable source of history. Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
Giving in to this demand would open a Pandora's box. There are equally unsavoury references in other scriptures and in historical and literary texts which offend different sections of the population. Where do you stop pressing the delete button? Instead of making such outrageous demands Bhan should concentrate his energies on ensuring that the constitutional guarantees provided for Dalits are adhered to. As for the Sankaracharya, he would probably serve the Dalit cause much better if he were to launch a mass movement against caste discrimination. Discrimination can be removed only by affirmative action, not by selective deletion.

http://www.buzzflash.com/buzzscripts/buzz.dll/content Here's a story that hasn't gotten covered in the U.S. press: As the USA prepares for a war against Iraq, it is being sued by Iran for its previous close relationship to Saddam Hussein. At the UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ), Teheran is accusing the United States of delivering dangerous chemicals and deadly viruses to Baghdad during the 1980s. Reports on the case have appeared in England, Pakistan and Malaysia. In the United States, Associated Press writer Anthony Deutsch filed a report on the case, but it does not seem to have been picked up by any U.S. newspapers. These first two weeks in August we are being treated to yet another chapter in a little ritual of selective amnesia and psycho-history that repeats itself every five years or so. People gather, chiefly in the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki , and remember those terrible days in August 1945 when both places were flattened by the first and only nuclear weapons ever used in warfare. They remember the terrible loss of life (about 140,000 at Hiroshima , and 80,000 at Nagasaki ) and they call for world peace and the banning of nuclear weapons. They generally do this in an atmosphere designed to make the United States feel uneasy at best, villainous at worst, for using such weapons.

Dustin Rhodes Released: Review: At the very beginning, Amnesia claims to be made up on the spot. Judging by its quality (or, to be more precise, by the lack of it), this might be true. The plot and puzzles are nonsensical, and the tissue of the story is "adorned" with lots of misspellings and a few bugs. Sure, the game is spoofing itself, but here, in my opinion, self-irony doesn't help much; in fact, it even fails to increase Amnesia's rating by a single star. National Review has issued a surprisingly semi-sober editorial acknowledging the state of the Iraqi occupation. They condemn the Wilsonianism neoconservative mindset that thinks that American can import democracy to Iraq. They also denounce the extreme optimism that denies any American failures or difficulties that occur in Iraq. While not admitting that the war was a bad idea to begin with, they at least call for a relatively prompt withdrawal from Iraq. Good for them. The editorial concludes, Ultimately, even if our choices now can help or hurt, it is Iraqis who have to save Iraq. It is their country, not ours. In coming weeks and months, we will have to defer to the authorities we hope will eventually take control, in the process endorsing compromises that we will consider less than ideal. But it is time for reality to drive our Iraq policy, unhindered by illusions or wishful thinking. We should do what we can to give Iraqis a chance at a better future, then pray that they take it. I couldn’t agree more, but it would be nice if our friends at
