Last updated: 5th August, 2005
History
Opened in 1970s. One of the original Ibiza clubs - used to be open air, but due to stringent noise laws, has had to cover both inside and the outside terrace. Amnesia has always been one of the island's favourites when it comes to end of season parties. The Terrace will continue until well into the afternoon. We like that!
Location
Half way between Ibiza and san Antonio on the main road, near San Rafael.
Music Policy
Inside Amnesia
Used to be the definitive open air venue, both outside on the terrace and inside. Legendary stories about never-ending parties and drumming sessions taking over when the music stops still do the rounds. These days Amnesia is an indoor venue, which still oozes style and class. The terrace is a huge greenhouse with palm trees, many bars and a mellower, funkier house sound. It normally starts kicking around 06.00 am. Inside is more trance orientated - great sound system and laser show - and get ready for the shock of your lives when they turn on the dry-ice machine which shoots great jets of cold air up through vents in the floor - one of the biggest legal rushes available.

By David Sisler
May 16, 2005 (AgapePress) - Firefighter Donald Herbert was trapped in the collapse of a burning building in 1995. Since the accident his condition has been described as being close to "a persistent vegetative state." He appeared to be awake, but was unaware of what was going on around him. In February of this year, his physician, Dr. Jamil Ahmed, changed his medicine. On May 4, Donald Herbert suddenly regained consciousness and asked for his wife. Mr. Herbert thought it had been a couple of months since the accident. He found out it had been much longer, when at his request, a member of the nursing home staff called the Herbert house, and Donald's youngest son answered the phone. Mr. Herbert said, "He's just a baby. He can't talk!" Nicholas, who is 13, was only three when his father was hurt. In the last decade, Mr. Herbert's favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills, has been to the playoffs four times, and the world has become dependent on cell phones and e-mail. But that hardly describes the scope of what he has missed. In 1995, the year of Mr. Herbert's accident, Timothy McVeigh parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and, with the help of Terry Nichols, detonated explosives that killed 168 people.

Amnesia
Memory loss may result from bilateral damage to the limbic system of the brain responsible for memory storage, processing, and recall. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group). Definition
Amnesia refers to the loss of memory. Memory loss may result from two-sided (bilateral) damage to parts of the brain vital for memory storage, processing, or recall (the limbic system, including the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe). Description
Amnesia can be a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases; however, people whose primary symptom is memory loss (amnesiacs), typically remain lucid and retain their sense of self. They may even be aware that they suffer from a memory disorder. People who experience amnesia have been instrumental in helping brain researchers determine how the brain processes memory. Until the early 1970s, researchers viewed memory as a single entity. Memory of new experiences, motor skills, past events, and previous conditioning were grouped together in one system that relied on a specific area of the brain. If all memory were stored in the same way, it would be reasonable to deduce that damage to the specific brain area would cause complete memory loss. However, studies of amnesiacs counter that theory. Such research demonstrates that the brain has multiple systems for processing, storing, and drawing on memory.

8:30pm Friday, 11 June Recommend to a friend Can a person reinvent themselves to escape their past? Detective Sergeant, Mack Stone (John Hannah) is a cop whose life is turned upside down when his wife disappears. Has she left him or has she met with foul play? The intriguing, two-part psychological thriller, Amnesia , starts Friday 11 June at 8.30pm. When his wife Lucia (Beatriz Batarda) unexpectedly leaves him, DS Mack Stone is desperate to find her. After months of trawling through lists of missing persons for her, he can't find any trace. But he does find a picture of Paul West, a man who disappeared after his wife and stepson died in a tragic house fire. Stone makes a connection between West and another man John Dean. He is sure West is actually the true identity of John Dean (Anthony Calf), a man who turned up at a hospital with head injuries and amnesia five years ago. Stone wants to investigate further. Dean is now married to Jenna (Jemma Redgrave) and says he has no desire to dig up the past. But as Stone becomes obsessed with proving Dean is a murderer, the tables are turned and questions are asked about Lucia's disappearance. Who is the killer and who has really lost his memory?

Amnesty's Amnesia
By Anne Applebaum Wednesday, June 8, 2005; Page A21 A few years ago I spent several days sitting in the back of a library in London, reading through newsletters, pamphlets and other accounts of Soviet prison conditions published in the 1970s and '80s by Amnesty International. Sometimes these reports were remarkably detailed, testifying to the extraordinary ability of prisoners to smuggle out their stories. One included the memorable observation that on Sept. 13, 1979, the prisoner Zhukauskas "found a white worm" in his soup. A more harrowing 1987 news release told the story of the hunger strike and prison death of dissident writer Anatoly Marchenko. His widow, denied a death certificate or a proper funeral, wrote his name in ballpoint pen on his makeshift grave. But Amnesty also published more general information about the Soviet political system, the whole of which the state-run media, the courts, the secret police was geared to the suppression of political dissent. This was important work, not least because most Soviet citizens were too frightened to do it. After all, during Joseph Stalin's lifetime, still a recent memory, some 25 million people had been arrested in the Soviet Union, mostly arbitrarily, and placed in thousands of forced-labor camps and exile villages all over the country. Millions died of starvation and overwork. This prison camp system, known as the gulag, cast such a horrific shadow that people were still afraid of it, 30 years after Stalin's death.

Kerry's Afghan Amnesia
By Charles Krauthammer Friday, October 29, 2004; Page A23 In the 1990s, Afghanistan was allowed to fall to the Taliban and become the global center for the training, indoctrination and seeding of jihadists around the world including the mass murderers of Sept. 11, 2001. This week, just three years after a two-month war that destroyed the Taliban, Afghanistan completed its first free election, choosing as president a pro-American democrat enjoying legitimacy and wide popular support. This represents the single most astonishing geopolitical transformation of the past four years. (Deposing Saddam Hussein ranks second. The global jihad against America was no transformation at all: It existed long before the Bush administration. We'd simply ignored al Qaeda's declaration of war.) But perhaps even more astonishing is how this singular American victory has disappeared from public consciousness. Today's Op-Eds

As a novelist, historian, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, politician and raconteur, Gore Vidal has been a voice of reason and dissent since the publication of his first novel The City and the Pillar, in 1948. The author of Lincoln and Julian recently spoke with In These Times and its affiliated radio show , about his latest book Imperial America: Reflections on the United States of Amnesia. Does a victory by either George W. Bush or John Kerry make a difference for the future of what you call the American empire? In Imperial America What is your assessment of how the American media has covered the Iraq war and the presidential campaign?
