Archive Article from Encarta Archives consist of articles that originally appeared in Collier's Year Book (for events of 1997 and earlier) or as monthly updates in Encarta Yearbook (for events of 1998 and later). Because they were published shortly after events occurred, they reflect the information available at that time. Substantial progress was made during 1938 toward rehabilitation of the American merchant marine. The condition of American-flag operators in general was more hopeful than for some years past. The principal factor contributing to the increased optimism was, of course, the actual beginning of the United States Maritime Commission's long-range construction program. Also on Encarta Compare online degrees Train for a better career College life Encarta word of the day It is still obvious, however, that if the maritime industry is to return to a satisfactory financial basis under private operation, considerably greater patronage must be afforded American-flag ships by Americans, both as to cargo and passengers. Vessels of United States registry carried less than 30 per cent of the country's foreign trade during 1938. Under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, amended, Congress laid down as a basic policy carriage of a "substantial" portion of our foreign trade in our own ships. The word "substantial" has been variously interpreted, but it appears to be the consensus that at least 50 per cent should be the proportion. In this connection we find Japanese ships carrying 70 per cent of Japan's foreign commerce, British ships, 60 per cent of their own, Norwegian ships, 62 per cent, German ships, 58 per cent, Italian ships, 46 per cent, and French ships, 39 per cent.

Colonial Africa This is a very well presented introduction to the history of colonialism in Africa. It starts with a brief list of important facts you should know, goes on to details about early explorers and the colonies, ending with the indpendence of African Nations. It even touches on Liberia, the nation founded by freed American slaves, and the only African nation never to have been occupied by a colonial power. Story of Africa The BBC collected articles from African historians on the history of Africa, and put them together to make this huge site. It has links to different regions and eras of African History.

Homework practices vary widely. Some teachers make brilliant assignments that combine learning and pleasure. Others use homework as a routine to provide students with additional practice on important activities. And, unfortunately, some assign "busywork." Homework has long been a mainstay of American education for good reason: it extends time available for learning, and children who spend more time on homework, on average, do better in school. Most of the suggestions in this book are geared to children under 10 years of age. The activities and games are organized around five specific themes that help focus their thinking. They are:
  • Where are things located? What makes a place special? What are the relationships among people and places? What are the patterns of movement of people, products, and information? How can the Earth be divided into regions for study?

Helping Your Eighth-Grade Child Learn Social Studies
This year, your child will study how people settled and developed land in all regions of the United States. He or she will learn the origins of the United States government and how this form of government was adopted. Your child will also explore and understand the complex problems of our nation and how it has struggled to find solutions. He or she will see how Americans have worked and continue to work to form a nation built on principles of democracy. Here are some everyday activities you can do with your child to help promote interest in social studies.
European exploration and settlement
  • Talk with your child about when your extended family first arrived in the region. Where did your family come from? How many other places in the United States did they live in first?
The American Revolution
  • Have your child role play being Thomas Jefferson. Have him or her tell you all the reasons the colonists want independence. Work to get your child to support each reason with an argument in his or her own words. Encourage your son or daughter to read additional books about the people and events of the American Revolution. You might suggest books about people such as Samuel Adams, Deborah Sampson, Paul Revere, or Mercy Otis Warren. Another topic to read about could be specific battles of the war, such as Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Trenton, or Ticonderoga.
