Samoan Culture and Important Events
Talofa and welcome to American Samoa Home Page. My name is Faitoto'a Pulu. I am 16 years of age, a junior here at West Anchorage High School, and I am going to tell you about American Samoa and their culture. Hope you will have great time visiting my home page. American Samoa is a group of six Polynesian islands in the South Pacific. Fourteen degrees below the equator, it is the United States southern-most territory. It is known as the heart of the Polynesians. Because if you drew a triangle from Hawaii, New Zealand, and Tahiti you would find American Samoa in the middle. Western Samoa is a neighboring independent country that shares the same culture with American Samoa. American Samoa became an unorganized U.S. territory in 1900. American Samoa is located in the mid South Pacific, 2600 miles from Honolulu, and totals 76 square miles. The Islands are home to a population of 57,366 people (1995), most of whom live in Tutuila. American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States, whereby its citizens are U.S. nationals able to freely enter the United States; an estimated 65,000 Samoans have migrated to the West Coast and some 20,000 live in Hawaii. American Samoa has an important tuna processing industry, and Pago Pago, a great natural harbor, has dry dock and port facilities. The government is the biggest employer in American Samoa. The Samoans arguably represent the largest population of Polynesian people and they take pride in a strong culture that has survived outside incursions amazingly well.

The islands of American Samoa, Tutuila and Manua'a, are in good company in the South Pacific, a region renowned for perfect beaches and dreamy hideaways. While Ofu, Olosega and Ta'u are accessible by airplane (about $90 round trip from Pago Pago), they are remote, unpopulated and quiet. The beach at Ofu stretches for just over two miles, but the sheer beauty of this curve of sand and the relative emptiness of its shores make it one of the best beaches in the world. The soft pink sands are ideal for strolling and the protected waters are home to thriving coral reefs and a variety of sea life. The allure of Ofu stems from its seclusion and desert-island fantasy; however, this is also its fatal flaw. While escapists and adventurous backpackers are drawn to Ofu's simplicity and remoteness, this is not the typical beach vacation and Ofu is not the typical beach town. The price of unspoiled beauty and uncrowded beaches is limited amenities and facilities, and visitors will not find extravagant chaise lounges and cabanas on the beach. Sometimes, even the most practical necessities of drinking water and restrooms are hard to reach. Tourism is limited and there are very few options for travelers looking for accommodations, dining and activities for the family near Ofu Beach. Ofu may not be the perfect family destination for everyone. Parents with little ones happily strapped in a child-carrier backpack or budding middle school naturalists will find the kids delighted with the wildlife and Swiss Family Robinson-like sense of rustic adventure. Those kids at risk of separation anxiety from video games, television and a pool filled with floating toys may not be as amused. The ideal solution for some is to stay on the neighboring islands of Western Samoa and build in a few days of rest and exploration at Ofu.

The People of Samoa
by Samoa Koria,
San Diego, California
In 1995, the Pacific Islander community of San Diego held its first major community festival - more than 60,000 people came to the two-day festival, July 22nd and 23rd.
Organizing to overcome a perceived inviability of Pacific Islander people in San Diego, Chamorros, people of the Cook Islands, Fijians, Guamanians, Hawaiians, Maoris, people of the Marianas, Marshallese, people of the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoans, the Tokelau, Tongans, and others came together to put on this historic event.
With the theme of Hokule'a-Ho'oku'i I Ka Pakipika (Bridging the Pacific), the festival was a vivid expression of the Pacific Islander people's history, culture, arts, crafts and cooking. Central to the festival was the visit to San Diego of the Hokule'a ship (photo above) - a symbol of exploration among Pacific Islanders.
The festival received a lot of support in San Diego city and county and has lead to steps towards Pacific Islander empowerment including the establishment of various new organizations and the placing of Pacific Islanders on city and county commissions.
After the success of this first festival the planning of the second festival is well under way. The following article about the Samoan people was written by Samoa Koria a member of the education committee of the 1995 festival and was chair of the 1996 festival.

Nearly 90 percent of the population is Polynesian. While English is the official language, most Samoans are bilingual. The island of Tutuila is home to the territorial capital of Pago Pago, where most American Samoans live. Tutuila has an excellent transportation infrastructure, including Pago Pago International Airport and one of the best strategically located natural deep-water harbors in the world. The airport includes two paved runways that accommodate all types of commercial aircraft.

American (Amerika) Samoa
is a group of six Polynesian islands in the South Pacific . Fourteen degrees below the equator, it is the southern-most territory of the United States. It is known as the heart of Polynesia . If you drew a triangle from Hawaii New Zealand and Tahiti you would find Samoa in the middle. Western Samoa is a neighboring independent country that shares the same culture. The Samoas arguably represent the largest population of polynesian people and they take pride in a strong culture that has survived outside incursions amazingly well.
Plan your next vacation here and enjoy the beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, beaches, relaxation, deep-sea fishing, hiking and indigenous culture. These islands are lovely, but their appeal is primarily to those who will be comforted by the constant reminders of the U.S. presence. This is not the place for travelers who want to deeply immerse themselves in traditional Polynesian life.

Crop Profile for Bananas in American Samoa
Prepared: May, 1999 Revised: July, 2001
The 1999 Census of Agriculture ( http://www.nass.usda.gov/census ) for the calendar year 1998, has substantially changed production information for American Samoa, mainly due to a broader farm definition. In the 1990 census, a minimum of $100 in sales was necessary for a place to be considered a farm. The new census considered "any place that raised or produced any agricultural product for sale or consumption", a farm, which fit 75% of all households. The $100 sales minimum now defines a commercial farm. A second reason for differences between this and the previous censuses is this census was strictly agricultural and conducted by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Previously, agricultural information was collected by the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, at the end of each decennial census questionnaire.
General Production Information
Note : produce is usually not weighed nor farm records kept in American Samoa, suggesting much of the agricultural information was based on estimates. Table 1.
