American History Study Guide Timeline of the American Presidents The Declaration of Independence is written, approved, and officially issued. The Articles of Confederation are approved, basing American government on cooperation between the states. Congress is empowered to negotiate treaties, but has few other responsibilities. A national convention called to strengthen the Articles of Confederation develops the U.S. Constitution instead, defining a new system of American government. The powers of Congress are broadened. Congress forms the legislative branch of the new government, and the Supreme Court forms the judicial branch. An executive branch is introduced and will be led by an elected official, the president. The president and vice president are to be inaugurated on March 4 of the year following their election (a date that remains in practice until 1933, when the Twentieth Amendment is ratified, changing inauguration day to January 20). The first presidential election is held. Voting is done by electors appointed by each state, and the number of electors are based on the state's population. Each elector votes for t.....

George H. W. Bush George Bush brought to the White House a dedication to traditional American values and a determination to direct them toward making the United States "a kinder and gentler nation." In his Inaugural Address he pledged in "a moment rich with promise" to use American strength as "a force for good." Coming from a family with a tradition of public service, George Herbert Walker Bush felt the responsibility to make his contribution both in time of war and in peace. Born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, he became a student leader at Phillips Academy in Andover. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the armed forces. The youngest pilot in the Navy when he received his wings, he flew 58 combat missions during World War II. On one mission over the Pacific as a torpedo bomber pilot he was shot down by Japanese antiaircraft fire and was rescued from the water by a U. S. submarine. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action. Bush next turned his energies toward completing his education and raising a family. In January 1945 he married Barbara Pierce. They had six children

      How Hollywood Imagines American Presidents
      By Rick Shenkman
Mr. Shenkman is the editor of HNN. Quick: Name a president who was so hungry for power and influence that he ran for public office at age twenty-three, married a woman "above his station," and represented rich corporations. Probably Abraham Lincoln does not come to mind. Who's to blame? Hollywood. Hollywood's depiction of American presidents is by and large a record of failure. The movies almost always get the basic facts wrong. They usually give us one-dimensional presidents, either all evil or all saint. And they perpetuate hoary myths to appease the audience's expectations. Good as Henry Fonda is in Young Mr. Lincoln , for example, there are vast corners of Lincoln's personality and character that the film fails to explore. More troubling, Hollywood gives us presidents who have little emotional depth. Watching Ralph Bellamy in

Presidents: The Secret History for Teachers and Parents
American Experience is known for its award-winning documentaries and Web site on the Presidents . Presidents: The Secret History looks at a few colorful aspects of presidential history in a format designed especially for kids. The site features a cartoon elephant and donkey, who look at historic, unusual campaign memorabilia from American presidential campaigns. Kids weigh in on the issues that are important to them, and what qualities they would seek in a president. And kids can explore a dossier of "secrets" little-known facts about each of the American presidents. For Teachers:
  • Political campaigning is as old as politics itself. As a class, review Hit the Trail and the 20 historic objects, from hankies to lollipops to magnets, from American presidential campaigns. Discuss these as a group: which objects do students find the most and least appealing? Why? Would any of them be likely to influence voters to choose a candidate? Now ask each student to design one object apiece for his or her own presidential campaign. Have them draw a picture of it and write a one-paragraph explanation of what it is, who they would distribute it to, and why they think it would be effective. Post the pictures around the room for the class to view. If you choose, have the class vote for the top three objects.

PRESIDENT BUSH ANNOUNCES NEH AMERICAN HISTORY INITIATIVE Washington, D.C. (Sept. 17, 2002) - President Bush today launched "We the People," an initiative by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to encourage the teaching, studying and understanding of American history and culture. "Studies have shown that Americans of all ages have a dangerously poor understanding of American history and culture," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole, who joined the President for the Rose Garden ceremony announcing the "We the People" initiative. "The President has identified this lack of understanding as a serious problem and has asked NEH to help combat it." Cole added: "Last year's September 11 terrorist attack was designed to destroy not only thousands of people but also the American way of life. In defending our homeland we must fight to protect the democratic ideals and principles of freedom on which our nation was founded." The three components of "We the People" include:
    • A call for applications to NEH for projects designed to explore significant events and themes in our nation's history.
    • An annual "Heroes of History" lecture by a scholar on an individual whose heroism has helped to protect America.

    Remarks at the Brandenburg Gate

June 12, 1987 This speech was delivered to the people of West Berlin, yet it was also audible on the East side of the Berlin wall.
    2,703 words
Thank you very much. Chancellor Kohl, Governing Mayor Diepgen, ladies and gentlemen: Twenty-four years ago, President John F. Kennedy visited Berlin, speaking to the people of this city and the world at the City Hall. Well, since then two other presidents have come, each in his turn, to Berlin. And today I, myself, make my second visit to your city. We come to Berlin, we American presidents, because it's our duty to speak, in this place, of freedom. But I must confess, we're drawn here by other things as well: by the feeling of history in this city, more than 500 years older than our own nation; by the beauty of the Grunewald and the Tiergarten; most of all, by your courage and determination. Perhaps the composer Paul Lincke understood something about American presidents. You see, like so many presidents before me, I come here today because wherever I go, whatever I do: Ich hab noch einen Koffer in Berlin. [I still have a suitcase in Berlin.] Our gathering today is being broadcast throughout Western Europe and North America. I understand that it is being seen and heard as well in the East. To those listening throughout Eastern Europe, a special word: Although I cannot be with you, I address my remarks to you just as surely as to those standing here before me. For I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, in this firm, this unalterable belief: Es gibt nur ein Berlin. [There is only one Berlin.]

    THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY
It has been described as "dignified slavery" by one of its occupants yet sought with creativity and cunning by many. It has been referred to as the most powerful position in the world yet shunned and avoided by some truly great Americans. A modern day analyst called it "imperial" yet its original creators were most fearful lest it become monarchical. It has been the target of myriad criticisms in time of peace yet often the polestar in the midst of crisis, internal and external. It is a branch of government with few articulated powers yet some would say that it is possessed of all power - and, to be sure, some of its occupants have acted thusly. Some have come to it by accident; some have left it by violent means. Some have left it at the height of their power and popularity and others at the nadir of their public lives.
During the course of SPRING 2000 we attempted once again to explore the varied elements which comprise the Presidency as well as the individuals who have occupied the Office Of Chief Magistrate . In doing so we have created this Website to provide others with some of the information and insights which we have acquired. By no means is this Website complete. As a matter of fact we have not included the incumbent President nor have we attempted to suggest who will be referred to as POTUS in the year 2001. We hope that these links we have listed will guide individuals to further examination of the Office and suggest resources where the study of each individual President might be best advanced.
