General Catalog 2001-2002
Posted April 9, 2001 Adviser. For advising assistance, please call the Department of Languages and Literature at 581-7561. The Department of Languages and Literature offers a major and a minor in Spanish for students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of cultures other than their own through the study of languages, literature, and society. The Spanish major also provides the necessary background for graduate study. In addition, the department offers a teaching major and a teaching minor in Spanish for students interested in secondary education. Students seeking teacher certification should also pursue the teaching major or teaching minor. For information on the post-bachelor's dual certification, which enables students to expand the grade levels at which they are qualified to teach in public schools. Contact the Education Advising Center for detailed information at 226 MBH, or call 581-7789. All courses counting toward the major or the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better. Check with the department to see if a transcript is needed. If a course that is a requirement for the major is not available, the department reserves the right to substitute another course to fulfill that requirement.

    Overview
Leading the field with over 1,640 college and university adoptions worldwide, the Sixth Edition builds on the classroom strengths of flexibility, depth, and balance in a strong revision and a new, more portable and readable format. There are several anthologies of American Literature. Only one is a Norton. "From the inception of The Norton Anthology of American Literature, three goals have been paramount: first, to present a variety of works rich and substantial enough to enable teachers to build their own courses according to their own ideals; second, to make the anthology self-sufficient by featuring many works in their entirety and longer selections so that individual authors can be covered in depth; and third, to balance traditional interests with developing critical concerns." Georgia State University EARLY AMERICAN LITERATURE RATIONALE:
In this seminar, we will investigate a number of literary and historiographical paradigms in early American literature and culture to test the ideological assumptions behind America's self-invention and self-construction. The old chestnut that the Puritans came to the New World and first fell upon their knees and then upon the Indians is as much a part of America's mythic history as that other chestnut that they came to America to set up their "Cittie upon a Hill." Such paradigms are by now so widely accepted that few bother to examine the original texts which supposedly proliferate this ideology. The issues covered here include the New World as New Jerusalem, Settler-Native American relationships, the jeremiad, Salem witchcraft, the Great Awakening, the rhetoric of the Revolution, African-American and Native American autobiography, and women's writing.
