Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Divakaruni grew up in India, earned a Ph.D. in English at UC Berkeley, and is currently juggling a professorship at Foothill College, motherhood, and her book tour. I'm not much of a poetry reader and usually find it hard to read poetry unless I find it gripping, evocative, haunting, and calling out to me in personal way. Chitra Divakaruni's poetry is all of this for me. Sonya Pelia
Vikram Chandra I caught Chandra during his Seattle book tour last year. He was swallowed up by a large black jacket with its sleeves rolled up, and he spoke quietly and with none of the air of the polished storyreader. A few of us took him out to dinner that evening. Seattle lay dark that night, and spaghetti in strange cities always hints at adventure. Chandra was the most animated telling uproarious traveling stories of Mexico. He's a devoted Bombayite (is there any other kind?) and an aspiring film writer. Chandra is very soft-spoken. It took him five years to finish the book, and I could imagine him slaving away at the screen over many a late night, putting aside his programming and his film projects to work on his manuscript. Oh yes, this gifted writer

Under most authors, there are two to three links to sites containing information about these authors. In addition to featuring links to these two sections, the site's home page lists the most recent postings under the heading "What's New?" The editor of this site, Mitsuharu Matsuoka, is a member of the Department of English at Nagoya University in Nagoya-City, Japan Overall, this site is detailed and easy to access. The Immigrant Experience in American Literature by Katie Richardson University of Michigan back to list of recent reports The arrival of new cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities has long been a defining feature of American history. As a result, the multifaceted experience of immigration permeates all aspects of American culture, including literature. Authors from Hector St. John de Crévecoeur to Bharati Mukherjee, Maxine (Maxing) Hong Kingston, and John Phillip Santos push the boundaries of the American literary tradition. In the process, these authors explore the universality of the immigrant experience in American literature and revisit the question of what it means to be an “American.” The Universality of the Immigrant Experience Literature encapsulates history. This can be seen in the literary works of early English immigrants such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote about Puritanism during the colonial period. The American Enlightenment, which immediately followed, was shaped by liberal immigrant authors such as Hector St. John de Crévecoeur and Thomas Paine. These political authors in turn influenced other luminaries of American literature, who were also first or second-generation immigrants. Society today poses the same query as that which faced Crèvecoeur and Paine: Who is an American? Is there a balance between assimilation and exclusion? To be an American, is it necessary to abandon one’s cultural heritage? Or is the multiplicity of cultures the core that comprises America?

By Ken Lopez In the summer of 1977, I was taking classes in a writing program at Goddard College, a small school in the Vermont woods where Raymond Carver was teaching before he became famous and Richard Ford was one of Carver's students. Young writers who visited that year included Tim O'Brien who hadn't yet published Going After Cacciato , his National Book Award winner and Ann Beattie, whose first books had just recently been published. Trying to focus on writing makes one an appreciative reader: that summer I read John McPhee's Coming Into the Country and it was the first time I recognized how much work must go into his writing which, to a reader, seems so effortless and transparent, lacking in artifact and affect.

A Note from the Editor
INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS VOLK,
Q: One of your specialties is Black literature. How/why did you choose this area to specialize in?
A: I had both personal reasons and what I like to think are practical business reasons. The civil rights movement was very active when I was a college student, and in the years right after that, and while I was only involved in very minor ways (participating in a tutoring program, etc.) it was something I believed in, and I began to read and buy books related to blacks in America. In fact, this was one of the common areas of interest between me and my first husband (now deceased), who was black and working as a part-time lecturer in black studies when I met him. Since we had two daughters, I continued to buy books in this area, so that they would have them available.
When I started as a bookseller back in 1993, I was planning on selling books mostly by catalogues and at shows, and so within the overall area of modern first editions, I decided to focus on women authors and African American writers, two areas I both liked and felt were somewhat neglected, since historically most booksellers and book collectors in the U.S. have been white males. I also felt that since I was more knowledgeable about these areas than many booksellers, it gave me a little bit of an advantage that would offset my newness in the business.

Thirty-five years ago, Native Americans had little voice in literature. Folktales and legends, which entered American culture through movies, television and books written by outsiders, attempted to tell the stories of American Indians living on reservations, farms and in cities.
It was not until 1968, when N. Scott Momaday published his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "House Made of Dawn," that people read the primary text of a Native American. During the 1970s, more works by Momaday appeared, along with other novels, poetry and short stories. Narrating their own lives, religions and cultures, Native Americans built a genre that now fills bookstores and is taught in classrooms from kindergarten through graduate school.
Like other historically oppressed groups, Native Americans incorporated influences, traditions and personal experiences into their work. Link to the following sites for a well-rounded overview of Native American literature:
