Teaching about Native American religion is a challenging task to tackle with students at any level, if only because the Indian systems of belief and ritual were as legion as the tribes inhabiting North America. So let's begin by trimming down that bewildering variety to manageable proportions with three glittering generalizations (which might, with luck, prove more useful than misleading).
  • First, at the time of European contact, all but the simplest indigenous cultures in North America had developed coherent religious systems that included cosmologiescreation myths, transmitted orally from one generation to the next, which purported to explain how those societies had come into being. Second, most native peoples worshiped an all-powerful, all-knowing Creator or "Master Spirit" (a being that assumed a variety of forms and both genders). They also venerated or placated a host of lesser supernatural entities, including an evil god who dealt out disaster, suffering, and death. Third and finally, the members of most tribes believed in the immortality of the human soul and an afterlife, the main feature of which was the abundance of every good thing that made earthly life secure and pleasant.

    An Annotated Guide

Michael Lorenzen, Head of Reference Services
    Central Michigan University

I have prepared this guide to help students find the best history resources on the Web. Unfortunately, there is a lot of garbage on the Web. Some of it is from people who have real biases on issues and they are trying to portray historical events in a skewed manner. Others simply write and post material which they sincerely believe to good history. The reality is that many of these people have no training in history and the end results of their efforts is misleading, wrong, or strange. I hope this guide simplifies the search process for history on the Web. Don't just type a search phrase into Yahoo! or Google and use what you find. Some of the worst sites do well in search engines and relying on them could seriously harm your grades! General Resources Here are some sites which I believe provide good resources for world history in general. Library Reference Search History Categories - This directory is based on the Open Directory Project which is a volunteer edited project of the Web. As every site submitted is reviewed by a real person, it assures that most of the spam, garbage, and wacko sites are screened out. This means most of the 12,000+ listings will provide you with good solid history information. The Open Directory Project is one of the most trusted sources on the Web. Thousands of sites use ODP data on their pages to give their visitors good Web results. Using Library Reference Search to access the ODP data will allow you to save time as dmoz.org has a slow response time on a regular basis.

Benchmarks for Professional Development in Teaching of History as a Discipline In June 2002, Bruce Craig, director of the National Coalition for History, organized a meeting with staff from the U.S. Department of Education to discuss the Teaching American History Grants. The executive directors of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the National Council for the Social Studies attended the meeting. These three organizations have encouraged and supported collaboration among teachers at all levels for many years and have produced materials including publications and pamphlets that integrate sound historical and pedagogical scholarship with suggested classroom practice. This document suggests that collaboratives for professional development in history teaching need to be planned and viewed from several vantage points. First, they must be set up according to certain general criteria, in terms of planning procedures, participation and duration. Second, they must involve sound approaches to historical content. Third, they must pay due attention to pedagogy and to active learning. Fourth, they must emphasize several definable habits of mind, ranging from uses of evidence and interpretation in forming arguments to understanding issues of change over time. Fifth and finally, collaborations must help teachers deal with appropriate methods of assessment. Above all, the collaborative programs must rest upon two fundamental assumptions:
