A millennium of North American droughts and pluvials
A farm during the Dust Bowl. This one is in South Dakota during May 1936. For year after year across vast areas of North America rainfall was low. Summers were parched and the heat excessive. Plants withered and sand dunes moved freely across a formerly green landscape. Human settlements had to be abandoned and populations migrated, forcing social change. By some measures the drought lasted more than a decade. No, this is not a description of the Dust Bowl drought of the 1930s but of the truly severe drought of the late thirteenth century, which coincided with the end of the Anasazi civilization. It could just as easily describe the severe drought of the late sixteenth century. Or it could describe the droughts of the mid-Holocene which so taxed the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. It is now clear that most of North America has, over the last millennium and throughout the Holocene, experienced prolonged droughts and pluvials equal or more extreme, and as long as or longer than, those in the Twentieth Century. The causes of these droughts and pluvials are unknown. We have only a murky idea of what is in store in the greenhouse future, but if we can understand the late Holocene hydrological history we will be in a better position to predict and understand future changes in hydrological conditions which could have important consequences for water resources, crops and rangelands.

EAST ASIAN STUDIES
The large number of courses in Chinese, Indian and Japanese philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, the move away from the Eurocentrism that had dominated the Department of History since its inception, and the demand for courses in Eastern cultures led the Faculty of Humanities to open the East Asian Studies Department in 1995. This new venture offers students a broad curriculum that covers history, policies, religion and culture in East Asian nations, and a choice of Chinese, Japanese and other oriental languages. The teaching program is based on the concept that Eastern cultures have been inadequately studied, and that the human history of east Asia has been largely ignored in Israel. Understanding the contemporary cultures of China, Japan, India and Korea requires understanding the traditional minds of their people. Thus, studies are organized around themes such as Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, theatre and literature which transcend the specific countries. The student selects a particular geographic region and its pertinent language(s) as his area of concentration.

The Flora of North America project has grown out of a long history of interest in the flora area and has built on the experiences of previous efforts to produce a comprehensive flora. It has been designed to draw on the expertise of the entire systematic botany community and to make the best possible use of the literature and herbarium specimens that are essential resources for the project. Despite current interest in and urgency of botanical studies of many other kinds, there continues to be a need for information about the plants of North America on a continental scale. Home

Introduction ... Contact FNA Historical Background The Flora of North America project derives from the deep interest that botanists have in studying and characterizing the plants of the region and the need for authoritative information for basic and applied research, conservation, and resource management. Ever since explorers first sent North American plants to Europe, the world has known that the flora is rich and interesting. The first accounts of plants from the area were published in Europe by European botanists (e.g., in Robert Morison's Historiae [16801699], Leonard Plukenet's

The Bozeman Trail in Dee Brown's
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
When Frederick Jackson Turner gave his speech "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" at the Chicago World Fair in 1893, he defined the west as a concept of progress and transformation. The image he used in his speech was the transformation of the old buffalo paths into roads and railroads: The buffalo trail became the Indian trail, and this became the trader's "trace;" the trails widened into roads, and the roads into turnpikes, and these in turn were transformed into railroads (Turner 11). Turner's theory, then hardly acknowledged, became an influential one in dealing with the west. Subsequently it transformed history teaching in schools and universities. His followers, the Turnerians, adapted the theory so that it could meet the needs of the 20th century. Yet, it still was a theory of progress and a celebration of the "making of America". It rook nearly 100 years, until new voices were heard, who rejected Turner's frontier theory. The New Western Historians, among them Patricia Nelson Limerick, see the west as a specific place, a specific region in the USA, namely "the trans-Mississippi region in the broadest terms, or the region west of the 100th meridian" (Limerick 85).
