Thirteen Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) FAQ by Bill Hopwood (USN-retired)
Additional Information by Bert Webber-MLS 1.Is it true that only Japanese Nationals (adults) were interned, not Japanese-American citizens? These days, the wartime terms "internment" and "relocation" are often confused and used interchangeably. Only enemy aliens were interned, but not all of them. Resident enemy nationals (German, Italian, Japanese) arrested by the FBI on security charges were given individual hearings and either paroled or interned. No Japanese-Americans were interned unless they had first renounced their U.S. citizenship. Internees were placed in Department of Justice camps under Army control to await deportation and repatriation. Non-alien family members (spouses and children) were allowed to accompany them as "voluntary internees." Many enemy aliens were not interned but were evacuated from the West Coast war zones. They either moved elsewhere on their own or, in the case of most Japanese, entered relocation centers. Relocation centers were separately operated by the civilian War Relocation Authority 2. Is it true that the Internment did not applied to the whole country, only to CA?

National African American History Month, 2003
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

frican Americans have played central roles in some of the most triumphant and courageous moments in our Nation's history. During National African American History Month, we honor the rich heritage of African Americans and pay tribute to their many contributions to our Nation. As we celebrate this year's theme, "The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections," we remember the successes and challenges of our past. We also resolve to honor the achievements and legacy of these proud citizens by continuing to improve our society so that it fully lives up to our founding ideals.
In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson recognized the need for our country to gain a more complete and informed understanding of our past. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and established the first Negro History Week to emphasize that "We have a wonderful history behind us . . . " Through the pioneering efforts of Dr. Woodson and the hard work of the Association, this observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
For generations, African Americans have strengthened our Nation by urging reforms, overcoming obstacles, and breaking down barriers. We see the greatness of America in those who have risen above injustice and enriched our society, a greatness reflected in the resolve of Jackie Robinson, the intellect of W.E.B. DuBois, and the talent of Louis Armstrong. We also gain a deeper appreciation for the AfricanAmerican experience in the writings of James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, and Zora Neal Hurston, as well as in the music of Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and countless others.

John Leland (Lee) Atwood joined North American Aviation, Inc. in 1934, one year before the firm moved from Dundalk, Maryland, to Southern California. He previously worked at Douglas Aircraft in Southern California, builder of such venerable transports as the DC-3, so he would cross the country twice in a short time. He soon became a vice president, and in 1938 was named assistant general manager of the company. In 1941, he became first vice president; in 1948 he was elected president; in 1960 he became chief executive officer at the retirement of Dutch Kindelberger ; and in 1962 he became chairman of the board. Mr. Atwood was born in Walton, Kentucky on Oct. 26, 1904. He attended Hardin-Simmons University from 1924 to 1926, receiving a bachelor of arts degree, then completed postgraduate engineering courses at the University of Texas, earning a bachelor of science degree in 1928. A number of leaders in the aerospace industry have described Mr. Atwood as "a chief engineer's chief engineer." His technical acumen was the driving force behind the company's evolution into an aviation and space leader which produced more military aircraft than any other company (a record which stands to this day). Among those aircraft: the P-51 Mustang, a swift, agile WWII fighter with an especially impressive record in the aerial war in Europe; the B-25 Mitchell bomber, used by Jimmy Doolittle and his Tokyo Raiders to turn the tide of the war in the Pacific; the T-6 Texan, which almost every U.S. and British WWII pilot trained in; and the F-86 SabreJet fighter, which exhibited a superiority of 10-to-1 or better against Russian MiGs in Korea.

Trailblazers for the Next Generation
Contemporary African-American History Makers

by Sonya Stinson If you think of history as nothing but a dead, dull record of events that happened ages before you were even a thought, think again. Historyincluding African-American historyis a living, continuing story, and some of the most significant achievements in our history took place during your lifetime, in just the last 20 years or so. Some of these achievements are recent enough that you have witnessed them yourself, and someday you will recount them to your own children and grandchildren in stories that begin, "I remember when . . . . " The 10 African Americans profiled below will be remembered as pioneers in their fieldsbusiness, government, journalism, literature, medicine, religion, science and technology, the militarybut their legacy goes far beyond their titles of "first." As one of them remarked, "There may be significance in being the first, but there is more significance in being the second, third, fourth, and fifth." It is their commitment to make the way better for those that follow, to leave behind something that lasts longer than their own spotlight, that sets these trailblazers apart.
"I know I could never forgive myself if I elected to live without humane purpose . . . without recognizing that perhaps the surest joy in life comes with trying to help others."
