Angry passengers have little sympathy
American hubs deserted RELATED STORIES, SITES ... FORT WORTH, Texas (CNN) A growing number of American Airlines pilots are reporting for duty, but some ticket- holders still face travel headaches. About 250 flights, or about 11 percent, scheduled for Monday were canceled because not all of the pilots were immediately available for flying. However, airline officials think they can resume regular service this week. According to American, pilots have been taking themselves off the sick list at a rapid rate since a federal judge on Saturday held the Allied Pilots Association (APA) and two top board members in contempt of an order that pilots return to work. He promised sizable fines against the union.

The Library of the American Academy in Rome contains over 130,000 volumes in the fields of Classical studies and the history of art and architecture. Especially strong are the collections in ancient Mediterranean archaeology and art, Greek and Latin literature, ancient topography (including the history of the city of Rome), ancient religions, and related fields such as epigraphy, numismatics and papyrology. There is a good working collection in the history of art and architecture, especially Italian. The rare book collection comprises chiefly 16th-18th century imprints in classical studies, archaeology, art and architecture, including sizeable collections of Roman guidebooks and early art treatises. The Library also houses small but noteworthy collections in contemporary art and architecture, landscape architecture, Italian history and literature, American literature, historical travel books and music.
The Library acquires ca. 2,000 volumes per year and subscribes to approximately 600 current periodicals. Preference is given to scholarly publications in the core subjects listed above. A special priority is given to publications from the United States, in the conviction that the Academy has a responsibility to represent the best of American scholarship to Rome's multinational community. Italian local and regional publications in the Library's main fields often difficult to obtain in the United States are another acquisitions priority. The Academy Library welcomes gifts, especially the publications of its Fellows and readers. There is an active Friends of the Library program on both sides of the Atlantic.

September 11th Remembered
As we remember the victims and heroes of September 11th , we should stand proud. The American spirit is embodied in the words of Todd Beamer, "Let's Roll." He and his fellow passengers on Flight 93 most probably averted a further strike against an American target, most likely one in Washington, D.C. We should remember them and other victims of terrorism against America as we commemorate the anniversary of this tragic event.

Home TV Schedule History of the Civil Rights Struggle African-American Icons Video Clips ... Store Advertisement Black History Month February marks the beginning of Black History Month - an annual celebration that has existed since 1926. But what are the origins of Black History Month?
Much of the credit can go to Harvard Scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who was determined to bring Black History into the mainstream public arena. Woodson devoted his life to making "the world see the Negro as a participant rather than as a lay figure in history."
In 1926 Woodson organized the first annual Negro History Week, which took place during the second week of February. Woodson chose this date to co-incide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln - two men who had greatly impacted the black population.
Over time, Negro History Week evolved into the Black History Month that we know today - a four-week-long celebration of African American History.

Immigration Conflicts
With freedom and opportunity in their dreams, millions have flocked to American shores since the birth of the immigrant-built republic. In predictable cycles, anti-immigrant sentiment waxes and wanes, driven by a complex formula of ethnicity, prejudice and economics. In Texas in the 1840s the newcomers were German and, in our latest additions to TheHistoryNet, we recall the intense conflicts that resulted decades later. ~Roger L. Vance, TheHistoryNet Editor-in-Chief

PRODUCE FOR VICTORY
Posters on the American Home Front (1941-45)
This exhibition was organized by the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). It was designed, edited, and produced by the Office of Exhibits Central, Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition is on display at the National Museum of American History. World War II posters helped to mobilize a nation. Inexpensive, accessible, and ever-present, the poster was an ideal agent for making war aims the personal mission of every citizen. Government agencies, businesses, and private organizations issued an array of poster images linking the military front with the home frontcalling upon every American to boost production at work and at home. Deriving their appearance from the fine and commercial arts, posters conveyed more than simple slogans. Posters expressed the needs and goals of the people who created them.
