Studies in American History
The Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History was established in 1964 with a bequest from Annielouise Bliss Warren in honor of her husband, Charles Warren , an eminent lawyer and legal scholar. The gift was designed to further the study of American history at Harvard and to open Harvard’s facilities to scholars from the United States and around the world. Since its founding, the Warren Center has brought hundreds of postdoctoral research fellows to the University, and awarded significant funds to generations of undergraduate and graduate students studying American history at Harvard. In addition to these major programs, the Center hosts public lectures by distinguished historians, organizes conferences on significant subjects in American history, and sponsors projects such as the recently published Yards and Gates: Women in History at Harvard and Radcliffe (see Book Archives , March 2004) .

Welcome to Lesley Nelson (aka the Contemplator )'s
Popular Songs In American History Website.
American Folk and Traditional Music with Lyrics, Midi Files, Tune Information
and History behind the folksongs and ballads. With folksongs arranged by time period.
This page was created on January 20, 1999
The background music is Over the Hills and Far Away
Sequenced by Lesley Nelson-Burns
This site is undergoing major maintenance and will not be updated until this is complete. This reorganization is being done because of the number of people linking directly to the midis at this site and using up the bandwidth. The music may not be availble for a period of time while this is being done. I appreciate your patience.
  • The tunes here were not all written by Americans, but are songs that were known in America. Most songs of the Colonial and Revoltionary Era were songs that originated in England, Scotland and Ireland and immigrated with their people.
  • These dates are, of course, not perfect. I have struggled to put them in APPROXIMATE/BEST GUESS date order. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. A few tunes are listed more than once to make clear they were popular in several eras.
  • If you wish to use any of these tunes in an archive or on a webpage READ THIS
  • If you are looking for a particular tune, the fastest way to find it is to use the Search Engine. The search engine covers the entire site so it will find more than just American songs.

Portraits Here's your chance to test your knowledge of early American history by solving Archiving Early America's crossword puzzle. Please note that you can use two different methods to solve this crossword. The first is the interactive mode,in which the crossword reacts each time you fill in an answer. It functions interactively either on-line or off-line on your screen. The other way to solve the crossword is using the familiar and time-honored tradition of putting pen to paper. Using this option, merely go to the printing page. There you can print out the crossword (1 or 100 copies) on your printer, the down-and-across clues, and of course, the solution. Have Fun!
