Afro-Americans are gaining recognition for the contributions of their race to American society. It has been a facet of the long upward struggle Afro-Americans have waged to win freedom, equality and respect. Some years ago, the National Park System recognized the achievements of outstanding Afro-Americans. Today there are six Park System units and two Affiliated Areas that honor the careers of Afro-American men and women. And the National Park System is responsible for the program under which 115 National Historic Landmarks have been designated that commemorate Afro-American history. The following objectives will be covered in this unit:
a. Give a brief history on the National Park System.
b. Give a biographical sketch of each Famous Afro-American.
c. Appreciate the value of taking field trips to National Parks, National Monuments, and National Historic sites.

NORTH CAROLINA HISTORIC SITES ...
Alamance Battleground
— COLONIAL/REVOLUTIONARY WAR Here in 1771, an armed rebellion of backcountry farmers called Regulators battled with royal governor William Tryon's militia. The spark for this conflict was growing resentment in the Carolina colony against the taxes, dishonest sheriffs, and illegal fees imposed by the British Crown. In response, the Regulators were formed and began to fight back. Though the rebellion was crushed, a few years later their tactics became a model for the colonists fighting the British in the American Revolutionary War. Aycock Birthplace — EDUCATION/FARM LIFE Charles B. Aycock was born into a rural home here in Wayne County in 1859. Interested in politics from his youth, Aycock began to practice law and move up in the Democratic Party after graduating from the University of North Carolina. In 1900 he was elected governor and dedicated himself to improving public education in North Carolina. By the time he left office four years later, one school had been built for each day the governor was in office. Today a typical schoolhouse of the period stands on the site. Historic Bath — COLONIAL PERIOD European settlement near the Pamlico River in the 1690s led to the founding of Bath, North Carolina's first town, in 1705. By 1708, Bath had 50 people and 12 houses. It soon became North Carolina's first port. Political rivalries, Indian wars, and piracy marked its early years but in 1746 Bath was considered for the colony's capital. However, when county government moved away in the late 1700s, Bath lost most of its importance and trade. Its original town limits encompass a historic district today.

Danvers
Though 17 miles north of Boston, and partially bounded by the cities of Salem and Beverly, the town of Danvers with its 13 1/2 square mile area and 24,000 population still retains much of the hominess and architectural heritage of old New England. Known as Salem Village in the 17th century, there are still over a dozen houses in Danvers dating from that era, many associated with the witchcraft tragedy of 1692. Becoming independent from Salem in 1752, Danvers witnessed the development of various neighborhood villages, each having its era of prominence, and possessing a unique character. Though a number of Danvers' structures have been lost to fire and "progress," much of the town's period architecture still survives, and its written records have been preserved, making Danvers an important and accessible area for period study.

From the American Revolution
to the Industrial Revolution
History Abounds in New Jersey The path to America's independence from British rule can literally be found in New Jersey at Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville. After crossing the ice-filled Delaware River on the night of Dec. 25, 1776, Gen. George Washington and the Continental Army landed at Johnson's Ferry, which is now part of the park.
Monmouth Battlefield Once assembled on shore, Washington's army began the nine-mile march to Trenton and the first American Revolutionary War victory over Hessian troops. Visitors to the park can see the actual trail that led to Trenton and marked the beginning of America's successful quest for freedom and independence. Washington Crossing State Park is located in the Delaware River Region , which has been called the Crossroads of the American Revolution. The region has many distinctive historic sites like the Red Bank Battlefield and Princeton Battlefield State Park.

In What Ways Are We Warped...
"When I was a boy on our annual summer vacation trips, the family car seemed to stop at every historic marker and monument. Maybe yours did, too. Dad thought it was "good for us," and I suppose in a way it was. Little did he suspect that it was also bad for us - that the lies we encountered on our trips across the United States subtly distorted our knowledge of the past and warped our view of the world." James Loewen in Lies Across America Below are the "Top Ten Silliest Historical Sites". Be warned, however, I use the word "silliest" in a very reserved sense. On one hand, these sites are indeed silly - they distort and mangle the historical truth. On the other hand, however, they are also harmful and dangerous to those who accept their teachings as fact and truth. You have been warned:

Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong
Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong is in its 22nd printing and continues to draw media attention and strong bookstore sales. It demonstrates how Americans get a distorted understanding of their past in their high school years. Unfortunately, when they leave school, their miseducation continues. Lies Across America: What Our Historic Markers and Monuments Get Wrong shows how our shrines of public history suffer from the same kinds of omissions, distortions, and outright falsehoods that

Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong
The politics of memorialization are changing. If the recent march in South Carolina against display of the Confederate flag on the state capitol building is one example, James Loewen's excellent Lies Across America is another example of re-envisioned history.
James Loewen
Reviewed by Joe Lockard
Monday, February 14 2000, 8:10 PM
For years I have thought about a certain historical project. Instead of erecting roadside history markers that mention only some eighteenth-century local notable or bygone nineteenth-century industry, let's put up those markers where black folks were lynched. Most of them were not lynched in obscure woods, but near or in the middle of towns: that already says a great deal about the savagery of American civilization. And then make sure that the names, ages and occupations of the victims appear on the markers, so that their lives do not remain entirely anonymous. Finally, include some details about how the lynching was conducted. The thousands upon thousands of markers that would be needed for that project would constitute a necklace of shame across the United States, for many more groups - from Indians to Hispanics to labor organizers - would need to be mentioned too. But that is one definition of education: to learn the uncomfortable. Does anyone delude themselves that a state historical commission exists today that would commission such a commemoration of lynching? Their task has been to provide an orthodox and acceptable history, even if that requires non-cognizance of the extraordinary violence that defined America's social structure.
