Interpreting America's Historic Places: Consultation Grants
Interpreting America's Historic Places: Planning Grants America's Historic Places As part of the We the People initiative, NEH seeks proposals for public programs that use one or more historic sites to address themes and issues central to American history. Projects may interpret a single historic site, a series of sites, whole neighborhoods, communities or towns, or larger geographical regions. The place taken as a whole must be significant to American history and the project must convey its importance to visitors. The projects should:
  • increase the public's knowledge and appreciation of American history;
  • encourage historic sites, communities, or regions to develop interpretive programs that address central themes and issues in American history;
  • encourage consultation with humanities scholars and organizations in the development of heritage tourism destinations and itineraries; and
  • focus on the development or implementation of interpretive content that tells a significant national story appropriate to the place.
Possible activities include docent tours, publications (e.g., brochures, guidebooks, etc.), driving or walking trails or tours, annotated itineraries, exhibition labeling or trail signage, films, and digital media.

Press Release Trust Announces Partnership with the Museum of Afro-American History and Welcomes Two New Historic Sites
"For almost two centuries, the African Meeting house on Beacon Hill has been a beacon of faith, courage and dedication. The creation of this partnership is a joyous occasion for preservationists everywhere - in Boston, in Nantucket, and all across the nation," said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust. "This is heritage that identifies and unites all Americans - wherever they live, whatever their economic status, whatever their racial or ethnic background. Protecting our legacy is one of the most important gifts we can give to the future and that's exactly what we're doing here today - and that's cause for real celebration." As partners, National Trust and Museum of Afro-American History will share the message that America's heritage is rich and diverse, and that protecting and celebrating it is everyone's responsibility. The partnership will bring increased visibility and bring more visitors to Boston and Nantucket to benefit the local economy. And perhaps the most important aspect of the partnership, all Americans have the assurance that some of our most important historic places will be preserved forever.

Forts
New York is home to many historic forts and villages which have now been turned into museums and historical organizations in hopes of preserving the past. The Statue of Liberty
Lady Liberty stands proudly over the New York Harbor on Liberty Island, but many are unaware of her historical significance! Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong
Loewen takes aim at monuments and historical sites, which together with museums are coming to be called "public history" as in history that the public actually encounters and contemplates.
James W. Loewen
Reviewed by Jonathan Sterne
Friday, June 29 2001, 9:10 AM
Public history is everywhere, often taking up our landscape in ways we don't ever notice. I work in a historic landmark building, the Cathedral of Learning. It's a 40-odd story skyscraper and apparently the second tallest building in the world dedicated to higher learning. On my way from my office to teach a course in Frick Arts Auditorium (named for a famous strikebreaker) just after I crossed Forbes Avenue (yes, that Forbes) I would pass a statue of songwriter Stephen Foster. Foster's a major historical figure around here. Not being into 19th century American music, I can only recall that he's credited with "Oh, Susanna." I don't know who put the statue up, but kneeling at Foster's feet is a smiling African American, apparently enraptured with Foster's musical skills. In fact, the statue has it backwards. Foster borrowed heavily from African American musical traditions, yet the statue celebrates Foster's creativity, not the creativity of his black colleagues.

Little seems to delight historian James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me , more than picking apart the cherished myths of American history. Few Americans study history after high schoolinstead, Loewen writes, they turn to novels and Oliver Stone movies to learn about the past. And they turn to the landscape, to roadside historical markers, guidebooks, museums, and tours of battlefields, childhood homes, and massacre sites. If you were to trust those sources, Loewen suggests, you would learn, erroneously, that the first airplane flight took place not at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, but at Pittsburg, Texas. "It must be truean impressive-looking Texas state historical marker says so!" Loewen chortles. In these entertaining pages, Loewen takes a region-by-region tour of the United States, pointing out historical oddments as he travels. For example, a massacre of white pioneers by Indians commemorated in Almo, Idaho, never took place, Loewen continues; neither did many other such events. Indeed, he insists, "throughout the entire West between 1842 and 1859, of more than 400,000 pioneers crossing the plains, fewer than 400, or less than .1 percent, were killed by American Indians." And if you were to visit Helen Keller's Georgia birthplace, over which a Confederate flag flies, you would get the impression that Keller had been an unreconstructed daughter of the Old South, whereas she was in fact an early supporter of the NAACP. And so on.
