Feedback YOUR INTERNET RESOURCE FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY THE HISTORY OF JUNETEENTH On June 19th, 1865 the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were now free. This date was two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Due to the small number of Union troops posted in Texas at the time, the Emancipation Proclamation had no impact on Texas when it was signed. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger's regiment, the news finally reached the slaves of Texas. General Granger gathered a crowd in front of the Osterman Building at 22nd and Strand and proclaimed the emancipation to Texans: General Order Number 3 "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer." Many attempts have been made to explain the two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news, but no one really know for sure why it took so long. For whatever the reason, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.

(Photo - Benjamin Davis) Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., was born December 18, 1912, in Washington, D. C. His father, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., was one of two black combat officers in the US Army. Davis Senior's career was badly stunted by segregation. He opposed the practice as not only harmful to back soldiers but also wasteful to the country. Young Ben Davis grew up inside his father's profession. From the beginning, he despised segregation and was determined to destroy it. In a way, he did; performing so well and leading so effectively that the arguments used to prop up segregation in the Air Force were fatally undermined. He became the first African-American Air Force officer to achieve general's rank, retiring as a lieutenant general in 1970. In 1991, he published his autobiography, and much about the man could be discerned in its simple title Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., American: An Autobiography. The younger Davis wanted to fly. To fulfill that ambition, he set his sights on the US Military Academy. He earned an appointment in 1932 from Rep. Oscar S. De Priest (R-IL.), the only black Congressman at that time. Davis believed his classmates would accept him based on the content of his character and not reject him because of his race.

Essentially, they demanded that the rituals and structures associated with Roman Catholicism be replaced by simpler Protestant forms of faith and worship. Their reformist ideas, by destroying the unity of the state church, threatened to divide the people and to undermine royal authority. In 1607 a small group of Separatists a radical sect of Puritans who did not believe the Established Church could ever be reformed departed for Leyden, Holland, where the Dutch granted them asylum. However, the Calvinist Dutch restricted them mainly to low-paid laboring jobs. Some members of the congregation grew dissatisfied with this discrimination and resolved to emigrate to the New World. Between 1790 and 1830 the population of Georgia increased six-fold. The western push of the settlers created a problem. Georgians continued to take Native American lands and force them into the frontier. By 1825 the Lower Creek had been completely removed from the state under provisions of the Treaty of Indian Springs. By 1827 the Creek were gone. Cherokee had long called western Georgia home. The Cherokee Nation continued in their enchanted land until 1828. It was then that the rumored gold , for which De Soto had relentlessly searched, was discovered in the North Georgia mountains. Its heritage stems from the 9th century when Soo Bahk Do, the ancient form of Tang Soo Do, was practiced in Korea.
