The program involves professional development with teachers in 47 secondary schools in eight states. This initiative brings groundbreaking research into secondary classrooms using a methodology that has been shown to engage all students in consideration of the ambiguities of history and the lessons for the future. The project focuses on significant turning points in our nation's relationship to the world around us, from the triangle trade of the 18th century to the U.S. role in the world today. This project engages teachers in participating districts with leading scholars in the field and assists them as they incorporate intellectually rigorous curricular resources and a proven pedagogical approach into the curriculum in their districts. Using a multi-leveled professional development approach, teacher-leaders from each district or region come to Brown University for residential summer institutes and then draw on this experience as they provide professional development to peers in their schools and districts. Regional and district level professional development ranges from one-week institutes to shorter workshops.

83. Learning The Lessons Of American History
Teaching american history If Cicero were to look at history lessons forAmerica s schoolchildren today, he might conclude that they will never grow up.
http://byrd.senate.gov/hist_index.html
Senator Byrd's Homepage "To be ignorant of what happened before you were born," admonished Cicero, "is to remain always a child." If Cicero were to look at history lessons for America's schoolchildren today, he might conclude that they will never grow up. Once again, a test of young peoples' knowledge of history in this case, the history of our own nation has demonstrated a sorry ignorance. What is particularly disconcerting about this report is that it reflects the knowledge base of college seniors from some of the best colleges and universities in the nation, not younger children with many years of learning still ahead of them. The test, sponsored by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni , was given to college seniors at 55 top colleges and universities and consisted of questions from a high school-level American history test. Nearly 80 percent of those tested earned a grade of only a "D" or an "F." A mere 23 percent could identify James Madison as the principal Framer of the Constitution. More than a third of those asked did not know that the Constitution established the division of powers in American government. Just 60 percent could correctly select the 50-year period in which the Civil War occurred not the correct years, or even the correct decade, but the correct half-century! A scant 35 percent could correctly identify Harry S. Truman as the President in office at the start of the Korean War.

COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Teaching American History Collection This collection is in progress. Materials are being added weekly. Collection Description Original documents such as diaries, maps, photographs, speeches and memoirs are the raw materials of history. As part of the historical record, these clues provide physical links to the participants and witnesses of past events and enable researchers to view those events from multiple perspectives. By revealing the language, values, hopes and fears of people who lived in the past, primary sources humanize history and add dimension to the names and facts detailed in books. When introduced into the classroom setting, historical artifacts become powerful tools with which students can critically analyze events of the past and imagine the possibilities for their future. The TAHIL collection also contains original documents concerning depression-era Louisiana and detailing Huey P. Long's "Share Our Wealth" program. From the Historic New Orleans Collection, a variety of original broadsides and speeches offer insight into the popular appeal of Long's Louisiana program. Transportation maps provided by the Louisiana State Museum illustrate the results of Long's massive road-building program. The Louisiana State Archives Collection offers researchers a unique opportunity to critically assess the relief programs implemented during the administrations of Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt. As part of the Archives' collection, the 1932-33 records of the outgoing Urban Relief Administration detail the results of their relief programs in Louisiana. For comparison, the 1933 records of the newly established Federal Emergency Relief Administration detail the goals and objectives of FDR's New Deal administration.
