Teaching American History and Civic Education All Americans must have a complete understanding of our history to be effective and engaged citizens in our democratic society. Yet according to the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Education Progress study, which tracks both Civics and American History understanding among K-12 students, less than one quarter of America's students are proficient in either subject. On September 17, 2002, President George W. Bush observed the 215th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution by announcing new policies and initiatives to support the teaching of American History and Civics and provide Americans with greater access to some of our country’s national treasures. To illustrate the good work being done as part of the President’s initiative, USA Freedom Corps is highlighting the Civics and American History projects offered by the Administration’s agencies and programs. Together, we are working to keep the foundation of our great Nation strong.

Over Here: Teaching Early American History as an American in Britain T hose of you who attended last summer's Institute conference in Glasgow may have been positively surprised by the amount and degree of interest in early American history within British academe. Over the past decade, there has been an upsurge in enthusiasm about early America among historians and scholars of literature and culture on this side of the Atlantic, which grows out of U.K. academe's growing interest in colonialism and postcolonialism, empire, and race, as well as from a desire to complicate the traditional ideas of English and British history, culture, and identity by examining the United Kingdom's role within the early modern Atlantic world.
One result of this enthusiasm for early America has been an increased commitment on the part of British universities to hiring faculty in this area. In the fall of 2000, King's College, London, appointed Gail Danvers (Ph.D. Sussex), a specialist in eighteenth-century Native American history, and the University of Saint Andrews hired not one but two early Americanists, Emma Hart (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins), whose work focuses on artisans in colonial South Carolina, and Sarah Pearsall (Ph.D. Harvard), who works on gender and family relations in the Revolutionary-era Atlantic. Kirk Swinehart, a Ph.D. candidate at Yale, follows Sarah and Emily Clark as the third Mellon Fellow in Early American History at Cambridge, and as this issue of

Native Americans
This article by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in the Library Corner column of Teaching K-8 Magazine The study of Native American people and their cultures is a challenge because of the stereotypes that exist, not only in the literature, but in our own minds and in those of the children we teach. Not long ago I was working with children in a school on the east coast and told them I had just come from working with Indian children in North Dakota. They were sure I was telling another story since, they said, "There aren't any more Indians. We killed them all." Hard to believe such things in today's world of television and world wide communication, but I'm sure these children were not unique in their ignorance. Many studies of Indians leave students convinced that all Indians lived in tepees then and still do or that they were all wiped out, not that our ancestors didn't try.

The Living Symbol
Suggested Grade Level: 9-10 How does an individual become the embodiment of a nation? Can the process be reversed to permit a glimpse into the human life underlying the symbol? Goals: To examine the life and legend of George Washington as reflected in his writings and in popular commemorations of his accomplishments; to investigate his contribution to the legend that has grown up around him; to explore some of the meanings that have been attached to Washington through the course of American history; to present a statement of findings. Skills: Assessing documentary sources; critical analysis of texts and images; critical thinking; Internet research.
Cultural Change
Suggested Grade Level: 10-12 Political developments leave a clear trace in the life of a nation, usually marked by legislative mileposts like the Fourteenth Amendment, which dictates equal protection for all, and the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. But such developments have a cultural dimension as well, often evident in the attitudes and assumptions implicit in political arguments. Goals: To examine some of the arguments used to win the vote for American women; to explore the cultural dimension of these arguments as reflected in their characterization of men and women; to weigh the rhetorical impact these arguments had in their time by writing counter-arguments from several standpoints; to think critically about the relationship between political ideas and cultural attitudes.

Conceptual Learning Problem Solving Object and Document Analysis ... Collaborative Learning Authentic Inquiry Authentic Inquiry This page includes examples of Web-enabled authentic inquiry from Accounting Group Project: Not-for-Profit and Government Organizations Kevin Michel and Frank Fronhoffer, Accounting 410 (Accounting for Not-for-Profit Organizations and Governments), University of Maryland University College This assignment asks study groups to use the Web and other resources to gather information about particular issues relating to not-for-profit organizations and then discuss findings and present a position paper outlining the conclusions reached in the online class conference. The assignment also pays particular attention to evaluating Web-based sources of information. Position papers are required to paraphrase and discuss rather than quote verbatim the concepts, ideas, and arguments found on the Web; only in appropriate contexts may direct quotes be used. The assignment, part of a course delivered entirely online, suggests ways to mine the Web for relevant documentation and typical practices and to use collaborative learning as a means of inducing accounting students to adopt practitioner stances in evaluating their profession. As the assignment makes clear, actuarial skills are only one part of that profession; to succeed in a contemporary business environment, accounting students must also learn to think critically, work in teams, and make group decisions.
