Teachers Explore Philadelphia The Dayton and Miami Valley Teaching American History grants sponsored nine teachers under the direction of Dr. Julieanne Phillips, Dayton TAH Coordinator, to travel to historic sites in the Philadelphia area. Teachers followed in George Washington's footsteps at Valley Forge, spoke with "Thomas Jefferson" at the City Tavern in Philadelphia about the new document he was writing to declare the colonies' independence from Great Britain, and toured the Amish countryside of Lancaster, PA in a horse drawn carriage. They will write lesson plans based on their experience incorporating primary source documents, the Ohio Academic Content Standards, and the National History Day theme. In the photograph, left to right: Lillian Drakeford, Co-Instructor; Flo Tigner, Rebecca Bernard, Wes Rodenberg, Jennifer Howard, MaeLynn Freeman, Magdalene Brinkman, Walt Petroski, and Donna McElrath.

    Teaching about America
by Judie Haynes Feelings of patriotism are very strong in the United States at this time in our history. It is very important to teach your English language learners about the songs and symbols of America so that they show respect at appropriate times.
    Teaching about the American Flag
Your English language learners should know about the U.S. flag and what it stands for. 1. Teach the vocabulary of the flag. Download the The U.S. Flag Fact Sheet. Teach vocabulary such as stars, stripes, field, colonies, states. After students have practiced the vocabulary have them fill in the blanks. 2. Ask children to name the colors of the American flag. Explain that we say the colors in a certain order: "Red, white and blue." Tell how each color has a special meaning. In the American flag, for instance, the blue stands for justice, the white stands for purity, and the red stands for courage. Put these terms into words the students can understand using examples. For example, justice means fairness; purity is clean; and courage means not afraid. You can find at copy of the flag at U.S. flag printout

.01 Introduction Return to Index Most teachers recognize the critical need to establish a strong conceptual stage or foundation for students to build upon throughout the learning process. Those students that fail to acquire the requisite knowledge and conceptual foundation often struggle to understand new material, because they lack the cognitive framework or schemata necessary for deeper understanding and comprehension. The National Standards for History refer to this framework constructed in the minds of students as "mental scaffolding." The study of American history is greatly enhanced by careful and comprehensive construction of mental scaffolding. As such, the critical period for American history is the point at which we begin our survey history courses, the Pre-Columbian and colonial period. Perhaps the importance of the pre-Columbian era in American history is best summarized by some of the key architects of the National Standards for History The study of American history properly begins with the first peopling of this continent some 30,000 years ago, and then proceeds to the epic events of the late15th century when three worlds met: when Europeans, the inhabitants of North and South America, and the peoples of Africa entered upon a historic convergence that was to shape much of modern history in over half the world.

Teaching the 20th-Century History of the United States. ERIC Digest.
It is important to reaffirm the teaching of recent United States history in secondary schools. Diane Ravitch and Chester E. Finn (1987, 84) state this well: "If we think it important that they [17-year-old students of 1986] understand the three decades between the Second World War and their own sixth birthdays [in 1975], we cannot expect this instructional job to be done for them by the daily newspapers or the nightly news; we have to teach this period as the history that it now is." Unfortunately, there are several obstacles to teaching this period of history, including time constraints, student apathy for the subject, and limited help from textbooks. This ERIC Digest (1) examines the coverage of 20th-century United States history; (2) discusses the consequences of limited coverage for student learning; (3) provides ideas on improvement of teaching and learning 20th-century United States history; and (4) lists ERIC resources dealing with all these facets of the topic.

Teaching History in the Elementary School. ERIC Digest.
Recent studies have shown that the historical knowledge of young Americans is less than most educators and citizens would desire. Students' knowledge of history has suffered because of untrained teachers, reduced course requirements, and textbook treatments that are bland and voiceless and directed more toward trivial coverage of details than to the fullness needed to bring vitality and credibility to events of the past (Sewall 1987; Cheney 1987). Content in history is practically absent from the curriculum of grades K-3 in most elementary schools; it usually is taught in combination with content from the social sciences in grades 4-6 (Ravitch 1987). A notable exception to national curriculum patterns is the new "California Framework" (1988), which emphasizes history at all levels of the elementary school curriculum. This ERIC Digest examines (1) research related to the teaching and learning of history in elementary schools, (2) purposes of education in history, and (3) teaching practices to develop interest in and knowledge of history among students in elementary schools.
