Description
First Ladies tells the story of one of our nation's most curious institutions, watching the role as it has evolved from ceremonial backdrop to its current place as substantive world figure. This expanded and updated edition brings us up to the present, examining the lives and roles of our most recent First Ladies: Hillary Rodham Clinton and Laura Bush. Reaching back to our first, Martha Washington, Betty Boyd Caroli explores the background, marriage, accomplishments and failures in office of every woman who has served as First Ladywhich in some cases included the daughters, daughters-in-law, and sisters of presidents. In new and expanded entries, Caroli focuses her keen critical eye on investigate the acts, advocacies, successes, shortcomings, and legacies of Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. Following all of her trials and triumphs, from unwelcome White House upstart to praiseworthy U.S. Senator, Caroli captures the essence of Hillary Clinton. She awards Clinton due credit for the influence she added to the position of First Lady, explores with an unflinching eye the suffering Clinton endured, and praises her as stalwart role model to women around the globe. In an entirely new entry, Caroli introduces Laura Bush as a woman of independent thought and action, a former teacher who earned a master's of library science. She shows that Bush is one who eschews political action but is nonetheless passionately committed to enriching education and boosting literacy through reading programs and literacy campaigns.

First Ladies' Speeches: A Woman's Perspective on the Issues of the Day
By Mira Spiegel Cohen Overview Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Rosalyn Carter, Betty Ford, Lady Bird Johnson, and Jacqueline Kennedy—all of our recent first ladies have been active, opinionated, knowledgeable and involved in the issues of their times. These women follow a long tradition of activism, for from the very start, the first ladies have played varying, but important, roles in shaping the administrations of their husbands. In this lesson, students will research one or more of the first ladies, including their personal backgrounds, personalities, educations and political ideologies. Additionally, students will investigate the important issues of the day and the special projects in which the first ladies were engaged. Students will analyze the role of the first lady throughout history as well as the role of women in the political process today. This lesson is designed for use in any middle or high school classroom and can be modified or adapted to suit different levels. Objectives Students will:
  • Research the background of one or more of the first ladies Write an issue speech based on their research and reflecting the important historical issues Draw conclusions regarding the development of the role of women in politics
Time Required The basic lesson will take about one and a half to two class periods and can be developed to include more time, depending on the needs and interests of the teacher.

    You Go, Girls!
The celebration of Women's History Month each March has roots that stretch back to the early 1900s, to the days before women could even vote in the United States. Women's History Month was partly inspired by what was known as International Women's Day, a special day in March recognized in many European nations beginning in 1911. In those days women had to fight for many things that we take for granted today. Women everywhere worked hard to earn the right to vote, own property and function in society with all the same advantages as men. In the 1970s there was a great movement in this country to begin teaching students about the notable contributions of women throughout history, the same way lessons were taught about famous men. By 1978, California was celebrating Women's History Week in early March. The trend was catching on all over the country, and in 1981, our U.S. Congress was moved to officially designate a national Women's History Week. The response to it was so great that in 1987 Congress stretched the week-long celebration into a month-long one: Women's History Month. This month is a time to look at the women Women today still face situations where they are not treated as equal to men, but in most ways, the opportunities for women have vastly improved over the past century. We invite you to check out these books about some of the amazing women - both famous and not - who have helped shape the nation and people that we are today. Through their example, you may just find a great role model to help you follow your dreams.
