Women's History Month
Throughout U.S. history, women of every race and class have made contributions that have helped to shape and strengthen the country. In 1987, Congress declared the month of March Women’s History Month to recognize these contributions and to promote the teaching of women's history. In observance of this annual event, CNN Student News presents this Web special, which contains background information, activities, keywords and online resources to help students understand and appreciate the unique contributions of American women.

First Ladies
They are the women who share the homes and lives of the presidents of the United States. They are neither elected nor appointed, yet they are some of the most influential women in the United States. There has never been a formal or official description for their roles, and each first lady has had to define what her role in her husband's administration would be. They are the good will ambassadors of the nation, and graciously host the visits of presidents, queens, kings, and heads of state from all over the world. First Ladies takes a look at the lives and duties of the first ladies of the second half of the twentieth century. It explores the roles defined by the first ladies themselves, from Eleanor Roosevelt to Hillary Rodham Clinton. First Ladies would be useful for classes on American History, Women's History, Political Science and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Discussion Questions
  • The position of first lady carries no official power. She is neither elected or appointed, but has enormous influence. How have first ladies used this unofficial influence to contribute to the welfare of the nation?

Treckel Fall, 1999 11:00-12:15 TTH Arter 212 Course Description: From Martha Washington to Hillary Clinton, Presidents’ wives have played an important role in American life. Objects of both public adoration and vilification, their lives have reflected the conflict and controversy that surrounds the undefined, unofficial job of America’s "First Lady." While some have embodied the American public’s views about women’s proper role, others have served as role models for change. This seminar explores the history of the presidential couple and its evolution as an "ideal" in American life. We will study how First Ladies have reflected and transformed women’s roles and the Presidency, itself. We will learn how individual women struggled with the challenges of their "job"—shaping government policy and defining the direction and success of their husbands’ administrations. Special attention will be paid to modern presidential couples from Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt to Bill and Hillary Clinton. Methods of evaluation will include the writing of two short papers, an annotated bibliography on a First Lady of your choice, leadership of two class discussions and participation in all other class discussions, and a research paper on a First Lady of your choice. (See Course Requirements , below).
