Dormant bulbs are readily available in fall and winter, and, with proper care, they can become a long-lasting part of your landscape. Amaryllis belongs to the genus Hippeastrum, and those we grow today are mostly hybrids of several species. The St. Joseph's lily is an old hybrid amaryllis, Hippeastrum x Johnsonii, introduced in 1799. We are so fortunate to be able to grow these natives of South America and South Africa in garden beds. In colder regions, amaryllis must be grown in containers because they would freeze during the winter if planted in the ground. Dormant bulbs that you purchase in fall or winter, however, must be handled specially this winter. When they are dried off and forced into dormancy for shipping purposes, the bulbs are triggered to bloom during the winter rather than the spring. If you plant bulbs you purchase outside into the garden, they will send up their flower stalks during winter when they are likely to be damaged by cold. Amaryllis bulbs purchased in fall and winter should be planted into pots using a well-drained potting soil with the neck of the bulb above the soil surface. You can also buy them pre-planted. The pot should be large enough for a 1-inch clearance between the pot rim and the bulb. Clay or plastic pots may be used, but since an amaryllis in bloom can be somewhat top-heavy, clay pots provide a little more stability.

Ronald C. Smith,
Extension Horticulturist With their prominent stamens, they are an amateur plant breeder's delight, so those who want to experiment ala Gregor Mendel to see what various crosses will yield color-wise couldn't be working with a better plant.

Planting
The large amaryllis bulbs are often purchased in potted kit form with directions included. These potted bulbs require only watering and light to begin growth. Plants which are already growing are available at many flower shops. Plant the bulb so the top one-third to one-half of the bulb is above soil. After planting, water thoroughly and place in a warm, sunny window.

How to Plan Special Flowering Dates
First decide when you want the amaryllis to bloom. The bulbs must be potted up 6 to 12 weeks before that date. For Christmas bloom, start the bulb in October. Begin around Thanksgiving for February Valentine's Day.

Care After Planting
Water thoroughly when the container soil is dry to the touch. Excessive moisture can cause bulb rot. As roots begin to develop and fill the container, the soil will dry more quickly and watering should be adjusted accordingly.

Amazing Amaryllis BY KATHERINE WHITESIDE Amaryllis cultivars are fuss-free and not just for Christmas anymore. Pictured here, 'Double Queen.'
The perfect post-holiday bloom is easy to grow and yields stellar results. Amaryllis is known as a traditional holiday plant, but the gargantuan flower can really save the day after the advertisement
wrapping paper has been packed away. It is so simple to grow that even the most exhausted holiday hostess can celebrate January, February and March with waves of brightly colored blooms. The bulb is also known by the Latin Hippeastrum ("hip-E-as-trum") from hippeus , meaning "knight on horseback," and astrum , meaning "star." Literally a knight in shining armor, it can tackle middle-of-winter cabin-fever months with as much splendor as any plant. Get ready to be swept off your feet and banish winter blahs.

after Rilke
By Mark Wunderlich

Listen to the poet reading this poem. You've seen a cat consume a hummingbird, seen it scoop its beating body from the pyrocanthus bush and break its wings with tufted paws before marshaling it, whole, into its bone-tough throat; seen a boy, heart racing with cocaine, climb from a car window in a tumble to the ground, his search for pleasure ending in skinned palms; a woman's shouts as she is pushed into the police cruiser, large hand pressing her head into the door, red lights spinning their tornado in the street. But of all that will fade; on the table is the amaryllis, pushing its monstrous body in the air, requiring no soil to do so, having wound two seasons' rot into a white and papered bulb, exacting nutrition from the winter light, culling from complex chemistry the tints and fragments that tissue and pause and build again the pigment and filament.

Amaryllis
During the cold winter months, many avid gardeners experience twinges of spring fever. This causes many an otherwise knowledgeable gardener to plant tomatoes outside in February, or their summer bedding plants in early March, knowing that they will have to start all over again when a killing frost wipes them out. But sometimes the urge for gardening can't be controlled. To bring a bit of spring indoors, and help cure your spring fever, nothing will beat the amaryllis. Not only are they one of the showiest flowers around, but they stay in bloom for at least 4-6 weeks. The amaryllis, or Hippeastrum , is a tender bulb plant from tropical America. It produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers, growing as large as eight inches across in clusters of four to six flowers per stem. The leafless, hollow stems can grow to be two to three feet tall. Colors include shades of red, orange, pink as well as white and striped ones. You can either purchase a pre-packaged bulb already planted in a container, or the bulb by itself. Some nurseries and florists will also sell plants already in bloom, or ready to burst into bloom. Regardless of how you start with it, this is a bulb that will re-bloom every year with proper attention.

Amaryllis Bulbs
Rebecca's Garden : Episode REB-607

When you think about growing bulbs, you probably think of planting them in the fall to enjoy them in the spring. But what about winter? That's where amaryllis comes in. Perfect for a cold winter's day, these beautiful flowers make great holiday gifts. Amaryllis bulbs come from the tropical regions of South America. Huge flamboyant blossoms stand boldly on tall, thick stems. The most popular types are large flowering varieties in shades of red, pink and white. In addition to the single-color flowers, there are also several multicolored varieties. Some, like 'Amoretta', produce a miniature bi-colored bloom. Different varieties bloom at different times, but most bloom sometime between Christmas and May. These bulbs are typically available around October; if you're going to give them as Christmas gifts, keep in mind that they need to be planted by the end of October. There are small varieties as well as larger ones. Smaller bulbs are less expensive and produce smaller flowers. You'll pay more for larger bulbs, but they'll produce those big tropical blooms. Materials: amaryllis bulbs
sturdy pot
heavy potting soil
embellishments like moss or lichen stake: bamboo, artificial red dogwood or a stalk of artificial berries

Amaryllis Bulbs
Grow It! : Episode GRW-612

Amaryllises are wonderful flowers for the holiday season. These bulbs produce dramatic single or multiple blossoms that last for several weeks. Here's how to keep your amaryllis going for next year's holidays: After the blossoms die, give the plant as much light as possible and keep the potting soil moist. The plant will grow throughout the summer; in August or September, the bulb needs rest. Take the bulb out of its pot; allow the roots to dry. Once the top turns brown, cut it off and let the bulb rest. After six to eight weeks, pot the bulb again and the cycle resumes. Your amaryllis will be ready for another holiday season. By following these tips, you will have blossoms from year to year. Ralph Bashioum, avid gardener

Amaryllis. The popular name of a variety of house or conservatory tender bulbs, but properly applied only to the Belladonna lily. Most of them are hippeastrums, but the culture of all is similar. They are satisfactory house plants for spring and summer bloom. One difficulty with their culture is the habit of the flower-stalk starting into growth before the leaves grow. This is caused in most cases by stimulating root growth before the bulb has had sufficient rest. Bulbs received from dealers should be placed in pots not much broader than the bulb, and the neck of the bulb should not be covered. Keep rather dry until active growth begins. The ripened bulbs, in fall, may be stored as potatoes, and then brought out in spring as rapidly as any of them show signs of growth.
