Amaryllis
Type: Flowering Bulb Latin Name: Liliaceae/Amaryllidaceae So just why do so many people enjoy growing Amaryllis indoors? That's easy! First, they are an easy bulb to grow. Forcing Amaryllis to bloom indoors is a snap. Many garden stores carry them boxed, potted and ready to grow by just adding water. Second, they have big, bright, trumpet shaped blooms cheering up the indoor winter scene. And, third, many people need to grow something during the long winter. For gardeners, winter can be long. growing indoor plants help us to get through the long off season. The word Amaryllis comes from the Greek word for "sparkling". And they do just that, brightening up a spring lawn, or adding color indoors on a cold, drab winter's day. Big, cheerful, trumpet shaped blooms come in red, pink, yellow and a few combinations of these colors. A single flower blooms six to eight weeks after planting. Plants can grow up to two feet. Amaryllis can be grown outdoors in frost free areas. They also can be grown in colder regions. In cold regions, pull up the bulbs before winter, and store them until spring.

I'd love to hear from you. Forcing Amaryllis The name "Amaryllis," in Greek, means 'sparkling." And if you've ever had one of these lovelies bloom in your home in the dead of winter, I'm sure you'll agree that this is an apt description of a great plant. Amaryllis come in many colors, from pure white to pure red, and many shades of pink in-between. One of my favorite pinks is "Apple Blossom" which really does look like its namesake. Some, like the new "Charisma" , are bi-tones, starting at the top of the flower, where the petals are light red, shading on down to the bottoms of the lower petals which are white flecked with red. Amaryllis are bulbs that are simply made for forcing - and if you buy several and start them at two or three week intervals, starting in September, it's possible to have them blooming from Christmas through April or even May - you know - those times when we're desperate for blooms! Potting them up is a snap. If you are only planting one, you need a pot that is about 3-4" wider than the bulb, with good drainage. Make sure it is relatively heavy, as an amaryllis can grow to be over two feet tall - and when those two feet are topped with several blooms, the plant can get top-heavy.

Amaryllis Care
Whether you are planting an old amaryllis bulb that you've saved, or a new one you've just purchased, planting and care is the same. However, with bulbs you've saved, cut off the old dried leaves when you replant the bulbs. Other than this, you can follow these simple instructions for both old and new bulbs. Plant your bulb in a pot one to two inches larger in diameter than the base of the bulb. Make sure the pot you use has drainage holes in the bottom. Plant the bulb in a well-drained potting mix with one to two parts potting soil to one part sharp sand, perlite or vermiculite. You might also add a bit of peat moss or compost to the mix. Repot old bulbs in fresh potting soil each year. Plant bulbs so that one half to two thirds of the bulb is above the soil line. After planting, water the bulb thoroughly and put it in a bright, cool room. Keep it away from direct sun. Water only when the soil is fairly dry. Too much moisture too often can cause the roots or bulb to rot. Be especially careful not to overwater in plastic pots. As the roots begin to develop and fill the container, the soil will dry out more quickly and you'll need to water more often.

Amaryllis for Winter Beauty
The amaryllis is well loved for its ability to produce huge blooms indoors in the middle of winter. It is often used as a holiday plant, with the bulbs being available for purchase in late fall.
Selecting and Caring for the Amaryllis Bulb
When buying a bulb, select one that is at least 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Smaller bulbs will not bloom. Larger bulbs (4 inches) produce better, often developing two flower stalks instead of one. Make sure the bulbs are firm and free of soft spots and discoloration.
Plant the bulbs in a container that has drainage holes. The container should be about two inches bigger in diameter than the bulb. The planting mix should drain well; an equal mix of peat and perlite would be suitable. Plant so that about one third of the bulb shows above the soil level. After planting, the planting mix should be thoroughly watered. Keep the mix consistently moist. The mix should not be saturated. Do not water over the nose of the bulb. If water seeps into the bulb, it may cause it to rot.
Keep the bulb in a warm room (70-75F) during rooting and early stalk development. As the flower buds begin to form, reduce temperatures to about 65F to prolong flowering. The bulb should be kept in a well-lighted area. During flowering, the plant is best kept in bright, but indirect light. This will help prolong flowering.

Amaryllis is a monotypic genus of plant containing one species, the Belladonna Lily Amaryllis belladonna ), a native of South Africa The Belladonna Lily is a bulb plant, with each bulb being 5-10 cm in diameter. It has several strap-shaped, dull green leaves , 30-50 cm long and 2-3 cm broad, arranged in two rows. The leaves are produced in the autumn and eventually die down by late spring. The bulb is then dormant until late summer. In late summer the bulb produces one or two naked stems 30-60 cm tall, each of which bear a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped flowers at their tops. Each flower is 6-10 cm diameter with six tepals (three outer sepals, three inner petals, with similar appearance to each other), white, pink or purple in colour. This flowering pattern is the cause of its common name 'naked lady'. The scientific name Amaryllis is named after a shepherdess in one of Virgil 's pastorals, and means any young rustic maiden.

    • It does offer some explanation: 'Stamens of Amaryllis '. I think that since this image focuses primarily on the stamens instead of an entire flower, the article would benefit having this as the lead image instead of Image:Crateva religiosa.jpg . What do you think? Sango 02:44, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
      • I think the current lead image does a better job of visually explaining what stamens are. A macro shot like this is potentially ambiguous as it doesn't show how the stamens relate to the rest of the flower. L upin 13:43, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
        • Well I've moved the picture up, because although Lupin's point about showing the relation to the plant is a good one, I think the Amaryllis picture gives a much better idea of which bit of the plant the page is talking about. Also, the page is a redirect for

Mad About Amaryllis

How to Plant an Amaryllis Bulb
by Gayla Sanders
Although there are many plants that are forced to bloom indoors during the winter holiday season, the popularity of the amaryllis ( Hippeastrum lies in its ease of care and its large, lily-like blooms that are so reminiscent of the flowers of summer. Flower colour ranges from red as the most popular, to pink, white, yellow and mixed. Dwarf varieties with smaller foliage and flowers are available but they tend to be more expensive and slightly harder to care for. The general rule is the smaller the bulb, the smaller the bloom. The holidays are probably the worst time financially to purchase this plant. Everyone wants one when they see the beautiful green foliage and bright flowers lining department shelves and corner market plant stands. As a result prices are inflated. They can be anywhere between 12-30 dollars Canadian minimum. If you purchase a dry bulb (no pot) in the fall and plant it up yourself you can save money (5-20 dollars Canadian), the selection of varieties is greater, and you can chose your own decorative pot instead of settling for the generic pots the full bloom plants come in. If you'd like your bulb to bloom in time for Christmas, pot it up by mid-November. This plant can be grown outside anytime of the year in warmer, frost-free climates. Either way getting this bulb ready to grow is simple and will take only a few minutes and a bit of preparation.

They are widely distributed throughout the world, especially in flatlands of the tropics and subtropics. Many ornamental plants of this family are mistakenly called lilies; they can be distinguished from members of the lily family (Liliaceae) by the anatomical placement of the ovary (see flower ) and are considered more advanced in evolution than the lilies. Sometimes the amaryllis family is included in the Liliaceae.
