Back to Fact Sheet Index Reprint Amaryllis Amaryllis are grown in the open field or in beds and borders around the home. They are excellent landscape subjects for use as individual specimens, in mass plantings, in beds, or as part of the border planting around home grounds and in park plantings. Those planted in the garden should be set so that the top of the bulb is just covered with soil. You do not have to dig each year or to "dry off" as commonly believed. It is better to dig, separate, and replant each year as an aid to uniform flowering and larger flowers. This practice also aids in reducing disease and insect pests, since unhealthy bulbs can be graded out and destroyed at this time. Fertilizer is an important item if you want to keep them blooming. High nitrogen fertilizers will make the plant fat and green but have few blooms. The bulbs that bloom best are those that are given a small amount of a low nitrogen fertilizer. Apply about a pound of 4-8-8-, 3-9-9, or 5-10-10 (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) per 100 square feet of flower bed. Add another half a coffee can of fertilizer as needed to keep the amaryllis healthy. This will help give you a proud display of bloom next year. If the plants grow rampant on little or no food, try planting them in less fertile soil next time. Rationing water during the late growing stages will help the bulb become dormant.

amaryllis belladonna in its natural habitat is found in small dense groups among The cultivation of amaryllis belladonna requires very little attention.
http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantab/amarylbella.htm
Amaryllis belladonna L.
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Common Name: belladonna lily, March lily, naked lady
Amaryllis belladonna grows in the South Western Cape. The bulb is typically large, brown and rounded and has a moderate growth rate. The large clusters of scented, trumpet-shaped pink or white flowers are carried on a long purplish-red and green stem appearing 50cm above the soil. Up to twelve flowers are produced from the flowering stem. These flowers are 10cm long and apically flare open about 8cm. Protruding from each flower is a long upturned style amongst a group of large curved anthers. The anthers are black and shiny at first, but split open to reveal masses of sticky white pollen. The inflorescence tends to face the direction that receives the most sun. Although most flowers are pale pink, white and dark pink forms occur. The strap-like leaves are deciduous and are produced after flowering. The leaves remain green throughout the winter period. The leaves produce a starch, which is stored in the bulb. In summer the leaves die back and the bulb becomes dormant. This strange phenomenon of flowering before the leaves appear is known as hysteranthy. The belladonna lily's specific flowering time is late summer, February and March.

Background Information:
I give each group of two students a mature amaryllis bulb. They are given pots and soil with minimal planting instructions. Their overall task is to raise the next generation of amaryllis, which appeals to them as they are the next generation. I require that they keep a log noting timing and amounts of water and fertilizer, growth of bloom stem and leaves in cm, and any other information that they choose, such as sun and temperature conditions. When the flowers open, they are to transfer the pollen from the male parts to the female part of the flower by hand. Some of my classes predict whether self-pollination or cross-pollination with another plant with the same or different colored flowers will produce the most seeds. They must improvise to find ways to mark flowers and prevent further pollination. The seeds mature in the ripening ovary over the next few weeks. When the ovary splits it is time to count the seeds and plant them. Number of seeds and germination rates are recorded. When the seedlings appear, I tell them that they have passed "plant." Students are allowed to take their seedlings home if they wish. I take the mature bulbs and seedlings home and plant them in my garden for the summer and bring them in after the first frost to dry for January planting. This keeps the cost down. It takes three years to produce a bulb that will flower.

The large bell-shaped or lily-like flowers of the amaryllis ( Hippeastrum species) and its hybrids make excellent garden and potted plants. They are available in a wide range of flower colors including red, white, pink, orange, salmon or bicolored and typically have two to six flowers per stalk. Most of the bulbs sold are either Dutch or South African grown hybrids that will flower without special treatment when first purchased.
GROWING AMARYLLIS INDOORS
Culture:
Soil Mix and Container: Amaryllis can be potted or repotted anytime after the plants have gone through a dormant or rest period which is in fall or winter. Late November is considered to be an ideal time. Plant the bulb in a container that is one to two inches larger in diameter than the base of the bulb. Potted bulbs thrive under conditions in which they are slightly rootbound. Containers can be either clay or plastic, and they must have drainage holes in the bottom. Plant in a well-drained, sterilized potting medium with a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5. A mixture containing equal parts peat and perlite is excellent. Light and Temperature: The sun-loving amaryllis grows best indoors in a well-lighted area that receives at least four hours of direct sunlight each day. A southern window exposure is best, while an eastern-or western-facing window is second best.

Potting Amaryllis for Indoor Bloom
Amaryllis are popularflowering bulbs which are grown for their spectacular bloomduring the winter months. Bulbs are available pre-plantedin pots or unpotted. The unpotted bulbs usually cost less, plus the potting procedure is simple. All that are neededare a good well-drained potting soil and a suitable container. Flowering normally occurs about 4 to 6 weeks after potting.A large, top grade bulb should produce two flower stalks with fourflowerson each stem. The individual flowers may be 6 to 8 inches indiameter. Pot amaryllis bulbs in mid-November for bloom during theChristmas holidays. Excellent varieties include: 'Red Lion'deepcrimson red; 'White Christmas'snow white; 'Prince Carnival'white with red stripes; 'Minerva'red with white star; and'Picotee'white with red edge. Then cross your fingers. Forcingan amaryllis bulb is not an exact science. No one can be sure whenthe amaryllis will actually bloom. The flower display, regardless, will be spectacular. How to Grow An Amaryllis... It's not just a Christmas flower
Hippeastrum
October 10, 1999
Nothing can break the gloom, like a bloom in the dead of winter.
Of all of the flowering bulbs, the Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is the easiest to force into bloom. The large, (up to six inch blooms) showy flowers, and ease with which they can be grown in the home make the Amaryllis extremely popular as a gift plant during the holiday seasons. The Amaryllis comes in many beautiful varieties including shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. There are also many multicolored varieties, combining shades of pink or red with white.
The Amaryllis is a tender bulb which originated in the Andes mountains of South America. Therefore, unfortunately, it can only be grown outdoors, year round in USDA zones 9-11 . In other zones, the potted plants may be moved outdoors after the danger of frost has passed but must be brought back indoors in September.
Amaryllis may be purchased as individually packaged or bulk bulbs, but more often are sold in a pre-potted condition. The pre-planted Amaryllis gift boxes normally take no more initial effort than simply watering them with room temperature water to bring them into growth. Avoid getting water on the nose of the bulb. Keep the potting medium moist, but not wet.
