amalgam noun
An alloy of mercury with another metal or metals; used especially (with silver) as a dental filling.
A mixture or compound of different things. In that year, Zola struck back at the novelist and critic Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, that curious amalgam of religious conservative and blasphemous melodramatist Zola called him a"hysterical Catholic" whom he had long detested for his superior bearing and his unfortunate sallies against writers Zola admired.
Gary B. Nash, History on Trial The so-called "protest" literature of the thirties was often an amalgam of the private rebellion of youth with social revolt.
Nona Balakian, The World of William Saroyan The governing body of college athletics is gradually extruding a regulatory text that reads like some crazed amalgam of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and the Uniform Commercial Code.

Abstract
Russell G. Keanini, Jack L. Ferracane, and Toru Okabe, "Theoretical Models of Mercury Dissolution from Dental Amalgams in Neutral and Acidic Flows", Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B: 32B, 3, June 2001
This article reports an experimental and theoretical investigation of mercury dissolution from dental amalgams immersed in neutral (noncorrosive) and acidic (corrosive) flows. Atomic absorption spectrophotometric measurements of Hg loss indicate that in neutral flow, surface oxide films formed in air prior to immersion persist and effectively suppress significant mercury release. In acidic (pH 1) flows, by contrast, oxide films are unstable and dissolve; depending on the amalgam's material composition, particularly its copper content, two distinct mercury release mechanisms are initiated. In low copper amalgam, high initial mercury release rates are observed and appear to reflect preferential mercury dissolution from unstable Sn ) grains within the amalgam matrix. In high copper amalgam, mercury release rates are initially low, but

While there is considerable commonality to the health effects commonly caused by these toxic metals, and effects are cumulative and synergistic in many cases, this paper will concentrate on the health effects of elemental mercury from amalgam fillings. Studies have found considerable genetic variability in susceptibility to toxic metals as well. The public appears to be generally unaware that considerable scientific evidence supports that mercury is the metal causing the most widespread adverse health effects to the public, and amalgam fillings have been well documented to be the number one source of exposure of mercury to most people, with exposure levels often exceeding Government health guidelines and levels documented to cause adverse health effects.

Best Face Forward: Chapter 6, Putting the Amalgam of People and Machines to Work

14 Apr 2005
As we have seen, people-dominant interfaces have long prevailed in traditional frontline services. But technological evolution and customer readiness among other factors are now enabling deployment of machine-dominant interfaces on the front lines of many businesses. Each approach has its strengths andweaknesses. People excel at conveying empathy and handling exceptions but are challenging to manage and costly to deploy and train, especially in large-scale service operations. Machines excel at processing information and performing rote or repetitive tasks but can depersonalize or homogenize interactions. In effect, the front offce needs machines to compensate for people's shortcomings and people to compensate for machines' shortcomings. Amalgam Dental Fillings
Executive Summary For more than 150 years, dental fillings made from a mixture of silver, mercury and other metals, Washington Department of Health (DOH) has been asked to address concerns that the mercury in amalgam fillings poses a health risk to the wearer. Mercury can damage the central nervous system if enough is absorbed into the body. DOH has prepared this information about amalgam fillings to answer questions about their safety, and to provide resources and references for those wishing to further explore the issues.

Dick Grayson
Former freelance adventurer turned special CIA operative, young Grayson caught the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Bruce Wayne. Seeing great potential in the former circus acrobat, Wayne requested he be transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D. Suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder, Grayson also assumes the identities of high-flying crime fighter Tim Drake and costumed mercenary Marc Spector. Though frequently confusing, the skills exhibited by all three personalities are valued by S.H.I.E.L.D. The moon symbol Moonwing's costume comes from the high-wire act his circus family once performed, a celestial celebration in which young Dick played the man on the moon. Kid Demon
Wally West
Unwilling to let his uncle, Blaze Allen, take on supernatural forces alone, young Wally West decided to help him. Using Blazes book of magic spells, he made a soul-swapping deal with the evil sorcerer Merlin similar to the one which metamorphosed his uncle into the rhyming Speed Demon. Transformed into the flaming Kid Demon, Wally helped Speed Demon defeat his demonic rival, Night Spectre and save the soul of Blaze's love, Iris Simpson. But or a terrible cost - now poor Wally is cursed with the devilish essence of Night Spectre! Mercury

Mercury amalgam for tooth fillings
Proper management of mercury wastes is important to reduce releases to the environment, such as those that occur over time due to leakage from certain uses (e.g., dental mercury amalgam). The main source of human exposure to elemental mercury vapour is dental amalgam (a tooth filling). More on the amalgam mercury ... As well as in mercury amalgam, mercury is
sometimes used in thermometers.
Mercury releases from dental practices may be reduced by preparing mercury amalgams more efficiently, by substituting other materials for mercury amalgams, and by installing appropriate traps in the wastewater system. Mercury Amalgam Toxicity
Your next visit to the dentist may not be as innocent as you think
by Jim O'Brien
Charles Williamson, M.D., co-director of the Toxic Studies Institute in Boca Raton, Florida and colleague, Jordan Davis, M.D., sat down with Life Extension magazine for an in-depth interview on the problem of mercury toxicity caused by dental fillings. Unlike past treatments of this subject, the two physicians spoke from a clinical, medical and scientific-not a dental-perspective.
The issue of mercury toxicity is a delicate one. For decades, most people have seen a visit to the dentist and subsequent cavity filling as a necessary and regular procedure. Side effects have not routinely been brought to light, so few have challenged the status quo. Evidence suggests, however, that such an apparently harmless procedure can have detrimental effects.
"I envision something along the lines of the backlash against tobacco, or drunk driving. Imagine a mercury amalgam protest group patterned after M.A.D.D.-Mothers Against Drunk Driving. When that organization came about, we saw results. That's what we desperately need now."

Dental Amalgam and Mercury
How mercury from dental amalgam
can get into the environment

There are many ways that mercury from dental amalgam can get into the environment:
  • Amalgam particles that are rinsed down drains or that escape poorly maintained chair-side traps and vacuum pump filters travel through the sewer system to the wastewater treatment plant. From there mercury from the amalgam may enter the environment in one of three ways: (1) It may be released directly to a waterway; (2) It may be released to the air if the treatment plant sludge is incinerated and then re-deposited to the ground or a waterway; (3) It may be released to soil if treatment plant sludge is land spread.
  • If a dental practice is connected to a septic system, amalgam particles become part of the sludge in the septic tank, which is eventually pumped out and transported to a wastewater treatment plant or land spread. Any mercury from the amalgam that becomes soluble will end up in groundwater.
  • Placing an item that contains amalgam particles in a red bag allows mercury from the amalgam to be released into the air if the medical waste is incinerated. The volatilized mercury is then re-deposited to the ground or a waterway.
