This booklet provides Minnesota dentists with a significant amount of information about amalgam separators and the MDA's effort to encourage all Minnesota dentists to voluntarily install an approved amalgam separator. To access this publication please refer to: Amalgam Recovery Booklet Since the publication of the "re: amalgam recovery" booklet, the MDA/MCES Steering Committee has approved an additional amalgam separator for installation in dental offices in Minnesota. Dental amalgam is a mixture of mercury, and an alloy of silver, tin and copper. Mercury makes up about 45-50 percent of the compound. Mercury is used to bind the metals together and to provide a strong, hard durable filling. After years of research, mercury has been found to be the only element that will bind these metals together in such a way that can be easily manipulated into a tooth cavity. Is mercury in dental amalgam safe? Mercury in dental amalgam is not poisonous. When mercury is combined with other materials in dental amalgam, its chemical nature changes, so it is essentially harmless. The amount released in the mouth under the pressure of chewing and grinding is extremely small and no cause for alarm. In fact, it is less than what patients are exposed to in food, air, and water. Ongoing scientific studies conducted over the past 100 years continue to prove that amalgam is not harmful. Evidence Implicating Amalgam in Alzheimer's Disease Excerpts from memo by Kip Sullivan - August 1996 Kip Sullivan is an attorney from Minneapolis that has recovered from an "incurable" illness after having his amalgam fillings removed. Since then he has been an advocate for making this treatment more readily accepted and available to others suffering from neurological diseases, and has done extensive research which is documented in a memo that he is presenting to several well known Alzheimer's medical researchers in the Minneapolis area. The following are excerpts from the memo, presented here with Kip's permission, without the extensive footnotes, references and tables contained within the memo. Robert Terry et al. are the authors of a book which reviews current knowledge about Alzheimer's Disease (AD). At page 363 of this book, Terry et al. state: "Taken together, these studies suggest that chronic low level Hg toxicity in AD should be considered as a potential pathogenetic factor in AD." Amalgam Controversy and Our Decision by Bob Hoffmann - September 1996 During the month of August, I was approached by several professionals that had been cured of seemingly "incurable" diseases through the removal of their amalgam fillings, and resulting detoxification of mercury from their systems. They have since become advocates for this treatment and have established a network with others that have been cured or are in the process of recovery. I was impressed with the list of names and types of diseases that have seemed to be helped with this procedure. I am convinced that it is a solution for some showing symptoms of neurological based disorders that should be considered within the medical community. Kip contacted me, as we live in the same vicinity, and described his recovery from an "incurable" condition through the removal of his amalgams, and the skepticism that it was met with from his attending physician. He also shared with me the names of others that he knows (and discusses in his memo) that have been "cured" from Alzheimer's symptoms as a result of the procedure. He also sent me a copy of his memo documenting the scientific basis for the theory. All this evidence and the lengthy chain of references (others having or being cured) weighed heavily on me, as I had finally accepted that there was nothing that could be done for Shirley. Along with the decision goes a certain amount of guilt that is always there when dealing with a disease that cannot be precisely diagnosed and for which there is no known prevention or cure. For which there is little known about cause except the genetic relationships within certain groups. I read somewhere that Alzheimer's (and other dementia) may be better classified as a syndrome rather than a disease, as there may be many causes (triggers) that eventually lead to the pathological outcome that has been identified.
