mercury amalgam safety:
rethinking dangerous decisions

Article by Dr. Zoltan P. Rona MD MSc

The character or beliefs of the scientist are irrelevant; all that matters is whether the evidence supports his contention. Arguments from authority simply do not count; too many authorities have been mistaken too often. Carl Sagan C., from Broca's Brain Mercury contained in dental restorations is hazardous to the human body. Conventional dental authorities in North America and Britain are frantically attempting to defuse the mercury amalgam toxicity issue by ignoring the existence of voluminous amounts of scientific research. Persistent denial of the dangers of mercury in dental fillings comes in the form of written pronouncements and angry attacks on the media by ivory tower heads of dental associations. Contrary to their wishes, the concern about mercury amalgams refuses to die. Despite the fact that over 100 published scientific papers directly implicate mercury released from amalgam restorations as a major contributing factor in chronic illness, groups like the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) refuse to acknowledge their existence. It should be noted that no government or professional agency has ever shown that mercury in dental amalgams is safe. This includes the American Dental Association (ADA), the CDA, the Food and Drug Association (FDA) and the Canadian Health Protection Branch (HPB). In its reactionary attitude, the ADA has even published literature which threatens that any dentist who removes amalgam restorations due to mercury toxicity is to be considered unethical.

    Amalgam Virgo
Amalgam Virgo is a joint-service, cruise-missile defense exercise at Tyndall AFB. Fast, low-flying cruise missiles are hard to detect. To practice their part in defending the U.S. from these missiles, members of the 513th Air Control Group deployed to Florida for the "Amalgam Virgo" cruise missile defense exercise. The multi-service exercise tested the defense and response capabilities to a cruise missile attack on Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., June 1-4, 2001. Homeland defense is increasingly being discussed as a primary mission for Guard and Reserve forces. The exercise was coordinated by the Air National Guard's 1st Air Force and involved active duty, National Guard and Reserve forces, the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard as players.

    Dental Amalgam Use and Benefits
Back to Fact Sheets and FAQs Because of a general decline of dental caries among school children and young adults, the use of dental amalgam began to decrease in the 1970s. There are also changes in patterns of dental caries, largely the result of topical and systemic fluoride, sealant use, improved oral hygiene practices and products and possibly dietary modifications. In 1990, over 200 million restorative procedures were provided in the United States; of these, dental amalgam accounted for roughly 96 million, a 38 percent reduction since 1979. This trend is expected to continue. There are also reports that carious lesions today are generally smaller, easier to treat, and managed by more conservative treatment that retains tooth structure. Because of this decrease in the frequency and size of dental caries, there has been a relative increase in the use of alternative dental restorative materials. The most commonly used and less expensive of the alternative materials, however, cannot be used for large lesions and need more frequent replacement. Also, there are currently many serviceable dental amalgam restorations that will need replacing in the future. Approximately 70 percent of the restorations placed annually are replacements. Most of these replacements will require amalgam or other metallic materials, because composite materials often lack sufficient strength or durability to be considered adequate substitutes.

    Amalgam Fillings:
Do Dental Patients Have a Right to Informed Consent?*
Michael A. Royal** Introduction An individual may seek the services of a dentist for any number of reasons. After examination, the dentist may determine that the patient has a cavity and inform the patient that the cavity must be filled. Dentists usually do not consult patients to determine what materials to use. Most feel that dialogue with the patient on this issue is unnecessary. However, some materials may be hazardous under certain conditions. New research suggests that mercury amalgam (or "silver") fillings (hereinafter amalgam) may fall into that category. However, the American Dental Association (ADA) supports the use of such fillings and assures "the American people that dental amalgam is safe."1 The ADA claims that since mercury amalgam has been used for over 150 years, its safety should not be disputed.2 While its position remains largely unsupported by scientific evidence, the ADA challenges those opposed to the use of amalgam fillings (anti-amalgamists) to produce scientific evidence that its use is harmful to humans.3 This challenge has been accepted. The anti-amalgamists have countered by challenging the ADA to demonstrate that safe levels of mercury in human tissues exist before endorsing its use.4 The ADA has yet to respond. Both sides do, however, agree that "[1] [mercury] is one of the most poisonous elements known to man, and [2] mercury amalgam may cause ill effects in those people who are mercury sensitive."5

This is especially true of the mercury toxic patient. The mercury toxic patient may have been exposed to varying amounts of mercury from diet, environment, employment or from mercury/silver dental fillings. All forms are cumulative and can contribute to the body burden. The goal of this preferred procedure is to minimize any additional exposure of the patient, ourselves, or staff to mercury.

    Dental Amalgam Overview
    Amalgam Use and Benefits
Dental amalgam, in widespread use for over 150 years, is one of the oldest materials used in oral health care. Its use extends beyond that of most drugs, and is predated in dentistry only by the use of gold. Dental amalgam is the end result of mixing approximately equal parts of elemental liquid mercury (43 to 54 percent) and an alloy powder (57 to 46 percent) composed of silver, tin, copper, and sometimes smaller amounts of zinc, palladium, or indium. Because of a general decline of dental caries among school children and young adults, the use of dental amalgam began to decrease in the 1970s. THE THINKING PERSON'S GUIDE TO PERFECT HEALTH DENTAL AMALGAM MERCURY POISONING
Although technically speaking, dental amalgams are not in the general ken of medicine but rather dentistry the problem is so widespread, I would be seriously remiss not to bring it to your attention. The problem of dental amalgams is the problem of mercury poisoning. Mercury is a natural element, a toxic heavy metal, which is highly volatile, the vapor form having the ability to kill cells outright rather than merely do damage. Mercury is used in thermometers and also is known as "quicksilver." The breakage of a mercury thermometer is a potential, although usually unrecognized, medical emergency. Once exposed to air, mercury vaporizes rapidly. If inhaled it makes its way into the tissues of the body in minutes. A large dose can be lethal. Like all heavy metals, mercury is found in two basic forms: inorganic and organic. Inorganic mercury is found in nature. Organic mercury has passed through a living system of some sort and has come out in the chelated form. One particularly dangerous form of mercury is methylated mercury, which is produced by the chelating systems of certain bacteria. If inorganic mercury is found in your amalgams and these bacteria are found in your digestive tract, the inorganic mercury will eventually make its way to the bacteria where it will be converted to methylated mercury and from there make its way to your brain! Methylated mercury is hundreds of times more toxic than inorganic mercury and has a particular affinity for the brain where the symptom complex can include mild to severe intellectual impairment and/or emotional impairment. Only chelation therapy can fully and reliably remove this toxin from your body.

Chart 2: Organizational amalgamation of the dental and industrial communities and their scientific journals. The US perspective. Dental organizations Industrial organizations Governmental bodies References Introduction In spite of the intense debate about amalgam and other dental materials in Scandinavia, USA and other countries, connections between the dental community and the manufacturers of dental materials has not been on the agenda. The industries strong urge for a positive image of their products and the dental professions strong defense of amalgam and other dental materials warrants such an investigation. True understanding of the defensive position of the dental community in the dental materials issue can not be reached without investigating the organizational amalgamation of the dental and industrial communities. In order to get a reference in a closely related field the organizational connection between two international medical organizations and the pharmaceutical industry has been investigated.

IS DENTAL AMALGAM SAFE? Mercury's extreme cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity is a major factor in the neurological conditions, along with its inhibition of basic enzymatic cellular processes and effects on essential minerals and nutrients in cells. Mercury is also documented to cause imbalances in neurotransmitters related to mood disorders. A direct mechanism involving mercury's inhibition of cellular enzymatic processes by binding with the hydroxyl radical(SH) in amino acids appears to be a major part of the connection to allergic/immune reactive conditions such as autism, schizophrenia, lupus, eczema and psoriasis, scleroderma, and allergies. Immune reactivity to mercury has been documented by immune reactivity tests to be a major factor in many of the autoimmune conditions.

Question: HAS THE FDA APPROVED MIXED DENTAL AMALGAM? (return to list)
Answer: The simple answer is NO! What the FDA has done is to approve the two components that make up amalgam i.e, mercury and dental alloy, but have not seen fit to approve ''mixed amalgam,'' which is what is actually used as the filling material placed in your teeth. Yes, that is correct. Although charged by law to evaluate and classify every medical or dental device to be used on or in humans, the FDA has not evaluated or classified ''mixed amalgam'' the material used in 75-80% of all tooth restorations. To avoid classifying mixed amalgam, the FDA simply took the position that mixed amalgam was a ''reaction'' product manufactured by the dentist when he or she mixed the mercury with the alloy before placing it in your tooth.

This statement was written in response to claims that the mercury content of amalgam fillings causes toxic amounts of mercury to enter the body. Advocates of this belief are seeking to ban amalgam use and to force dentists and dental organizations to compensate all persons who claim that amalgam has damaged their health. The National Council Against Health Fraud believes that amalgam fillings are safe, that anti-amalgam activities endanger public welfare, and that so-called "mercury-free dentistry" is substandard practice. Background History
Dental amalgam has been widely used for over 150 years. It is made by mixing approximately equal parts of elemental liquid mercury (43 to 54 percent) and an alloy powder (57 to 46 percent) composed of silver, tin, copper, and sometimes smaller amounts of zinc, palladium, or indium [1]. Although some forms of mercury are hazardous, the mercury in amalgam is chemically bound to the other metals to make it stable and therefore safe for use in dental applications. The difference between bound and unbound chemicals can be illustrated by a simple comparison. Elemental hydrogen is an explosive gas. Elemental oxygen is a gas that supports combustion. When combined, however, they form water, which has neither of these effects. Saying that amalgam will poison you is like saying that drinking water will make you explode and burst into flames.

Welcome! Big Smith is a band from Springfield, Missouri composed of five cousins, including two sets of brothers: Mark and Jody Bilyeu, Jay and Mike Williamson, and Rik Thomas. After coming together professionally in the fall of 1996, they quickly earned a devoted following playing raucous acoustic music that captured the spirit of their native Ozarks, equipped only with an acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass fiddle and washboard. Recent shows find them expanding their instrumentation to include electric guitars, piano and drums. The result is a live performance with variety enough to please a diverse audience, young and old, while keeping their roots firmly planted. Adding to the variety, the boys can handle as many as 20 instruments in their shows, including dulcimer, harmonica, tin-whistle, accordion, trumpet, sousaphone, trombone, slide guitar, organ, mouth bow, spoons and bones. What truly sets this band apart, however, are their well-crafted, sometimes quirky, but always catchy original songs. They are adored in their native Ozarks, but are now enjoying capacity crowds in nearby cities: St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, Joplin, Lawrence, Fayetteville, Eureka Springs, Little Rock, Tulsa, Stillwater and Memphis. They have made their mark outside their region with several forays to Chicago, Nashville, and Austin. They have recently enjoyed high-profile opening gigs for the likes of Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson and the Del McCoury band. Summer of 2002 and 2003 found them on the road, bringing their music to new territories, including California, forays up north into Minnesota and Wisconsin, also down south along the Mississippi River, all the way to New Orleans.
