After examination, the dentist may determine that the patient has a cavity and inform the patient that the cavity must be filled. Dentists usually do not consult patients to determine what materials to use. Most feel that dialogue with the patient on this issue is unnecessary. However, some materials may be hazardous under certain conditions. New research suggests that mercury amalgam (or "silver") fillings (hereinafter amalgam) may fall into that category.
