Facts, Disease Prevention and Treatment Strategies
Alzheimer's Facts and Statistics
We've all had times when we can't remember where we put our keys or when an appointment was supposed to be. These occasional memory lapses are a normal part of being human. So when should you worry about signs of Alzheimer's Disease? A simple example is: If you forgot where you put your glasses there is no great cause for concern ... but if you've forgotten you wear glasses you have significant reason to worry about your memory problem. A more extensive list of Alzheimer's Symptoms is as follows: a chronic, progressively worsening problem accompanied by disorientation, problems with judgement, concentration, language and mathematical skills, physical coordination, and sleeplessness, the repetition of the same ideas or movements, the tendency to wander off and get lost, "sunsetting" or restlessness and wandering off in the late afternoon and night, dramatic personality changes, and eventually the loss of the ability to perform basic self-care functions. Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that already affects millions of Americans and that is expected to affect millions more as the number of people over 50 continues to increase.

65. My Journey By Chip Gerber
By Chip Gerber. This is the story of the author's journey, and his invitation to come along with him. He was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease in 1997 at age 55.
http://www.zarcrom.com/users/alzheimers/chip.html
Love Me (Right Click To Stop Midi) My journey began when I was born in Dover, Ohio, many years ago in 1945. Although it took me a long time to realize I was on a journey, I think I became aware back in 1997 when I was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease by Dr. Bartram in Canton, Ohio. I was a few years from retirement, although I tended not to think about it. I enjoyed what I did for a living. I had been a social workers for over 25 years, having also served as youth director and pastor in different churches. I was able to do what I had always wanted to do and trained to do, working with individuals and their needs.
During my last employment I served as a court appointed guardian for those who had no one else to serve them....senior citizens who were neglected, abused and exploited. I soon discovered that senior abuse was a wide spread problem. I assessed the case and would serve my agency in court as a witness to what situation the senior was in, along with an attorney. I was known in my community and in the probate court system. Then there came a time when I began to question, to doubt my memory, which began to complicate my job of many years of service to the degree where I was no longer able to function as I always had in the past.
Work was a strong ethic passed on to me by my father. I prided myself in caring and being able to master what had to be accomplished for the sake of those I served. I began slipping and it only seemed to get worse day by day. What was happening to me? What did I have? What was causing my memory loss and causing me to be unable to carry out my work assignments? My memory was terrible. I could no longer follow notes or even keep up with the paper work for each case. I began to panic, to have anxiety attacks, to lose control. I became clinically depressed. My journey and many of my goals seemed to take an abrupt turn and my life became a nightmare.

76,000 Oregonians have Alzheimer's disease (AD) or a related disorder. These dementias are especially common with increasing age. Among those over 65, people over 85 years old are the fastest growing segment of our population. Up to half of these octogenarians will develop cognitive impairment or dementia. In these pages you will find a breadth of information related to clinical programs, basic and clinical research, and educational activities and outreach all geared toward helping to solve the challenges of dementia.

What is Alzheimer's Disease? Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, irreversible disorder that attacks the brain and results in memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment and personality changes. It is the most common cause of severe intellectual impairment in older individuals and a primary reason for the placement of the elderly in nursing homes. Over 500,000 Californians are affected by this illness. At present, it is not known what causes Alzheimer's disease or how to prevent or cure it. However, there is often much that can be done to reduce symptoms, improve functioning and aid the family in caring for the patient at home.

Facts About Alzheimer's Disease Questions To Ask The Doctor Caregiving Tips ... Contact Information Alzheimer's Disease Information AoA Fact Sheet on Alzheimer's Disease The occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is not a normal development in the aging process. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by a gradual loss of memory, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills, impaired judgment and ability to plan, and personality changes. Over time, these changes become so severe that they interfere with an individual’s daily functioning, resulting eventually in death. While the disease can last from 3 to 20 years after the onset of symptoms, the average duration is 8 years.
Alzheimer’s disease affects as many as 4 million Americans. Most people diagnosed with AD are older than 65. However, it is possible for the disease to occur in people in their 40’s and 50’s. Recent research has shown links between some genes and AD, but in about 90% of cases, there is no clear genetic link.

Alternate Names : Senile Dementia/Alzheimer's Type (SDAT) Definition Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a slowly progressive form of dementia, which is a progressive, acquired impairment of intellectual functions. Memory impairment is a necessary feature for the diagnosis. Change in one of the following areas must also be present for any form of dementia to be diagnosed: language, decision-making ability, judgment, attention, and other related areas of cognitive function and personality.
The rate of progression is different for each person. If AD develops rapidly, it is likely to continue to progress rapidly. If it has been slow to progress, it will likely continue on a slow course.

Alzheimer's Disease
(Released Fall 1997) by Frederic A. Spangler Contact Overview With the "graying" of society, people are living much longer. This increased lifespan is not without accompanying health problems. Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and cancer are three pathological states the incidence of which seems to increase rapidly with age. The following research update covers Alzheimer's diseasea progressive form of dementia most often associated with aging. Dementia is a biochemically-mediated mental disorder indicated by a generalized loss of intellectual ability. This involves impairment of memory, judgment, and abstract thinking. Changes in personality are also associated with dementia. Dementia is not a specific disease. It is a set of symptoms found in a variety of pathological conditions. These include Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, stroke, depression, infections of the brain, and trauma to the head. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain. Its etiology is just now starting to be understood. It is characterized by a diffuse atrophy throughout the cerebral cortex with attendant, highly distinctive pathological changes. These changes include senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.

Alzheimer's Disease
Does caffeine intake protect from Alzheimer's disease? Maia L, de Mendonca A. Eur J Neurol. 2002 Jul;9(4):377-82. Dementia Clinics, Hospital of Santa Maria and Laboratory of Neurosciences, Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon Portugal Prevention of dementias: state of the art. [Article in German] Heuser I. Dtsch Med Wochenschr. 2003 Feb 28;128(9):421-2. Klinik und Poliklinik fur Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Universitatsklinikum Benjamin Franklin, Freie Universitat Berlin, Berlin. Dementias of late life constitute a major public health challenge. Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form. Epidemiological studies suggest that the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, wine and coffee consumption and regular physical activity may delay onset of AD or reduce rate of progression. Preclinical research in animals and epidemiological studies in humans have shown that estrogen substitution strategies and lipid lowering statins may be beneficial. Thus, despite the lack of prospective studies and, therefore, consensus, different pharmacological strategies for persons at high risk for Alzheimer's disease are discussed. Risk factors for Alzheimer's disease: a prospective analysis from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. Lindsay J, Laurin D, Verreault R, Hebert R, Helliwell B, Hill GB, McDowell I.
