What is Alzheimer's disease? Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting around 500,000 people in the UK. This information sheet outlines the symptoms and causes of Alzheimer's disease, and describes what treatments are currently available. Alzheimer's disease, first described by the German neurologist Alois Alzheimer, is a physical disease affecting the brain. During the course of the disease 'plaques' and 'tangles' develop in the structure of the brain, leading to the death of brain cells. We also know that people with Alzheimer's have a shortage of some important chemicals in their brain. These chemicals are involved with the
transmission of messages within the brain. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, which means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged. As this happens, the symptoms become more severe. Symptoms
People in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease may experience lapses of memory and have problems finding the right words. As the disease progresses they may:

What is Lewy body disease?
What is Lewy Body disease ?
What are the symptoms ?
What diagnostic tests are there ?
Is treatment possible ?
This sheet tells you about a condition called Lewy body disease which is a cause of dementia very similar to Alzheimer's disease. It differs both in the precise nature of the symptoms and in the damage that is found in the brain after death. There is no cure or treatment specifically for Lewy body disease. However, other drugs may help with some of the symptoms. Lewy body disease is a dementia which is caused by damage in the brain. It is similar to Alzheimer's disease, but symptoms are typically different on close examination, with different signs found in the brain after death. The cause is unknown. Lewy body disease has relatively recently been accepted as a separate disease in its own right. The disease gets its name because of the deposits which are found in the brain after death (named after the doctor who first wrote about them). Lewy bodies are round deposits which contain damaged nerve cells. They are probably formed as the cells try to protect themselves from attack. It is increasingly important to diagnose such conditions accurately as new drugs are developed which may be more effective in some types of dementia than in others.

About Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Dementia is a collective name for progressive degenerative brain syndromes which affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. Symptoms may include:
  • loss of memory difficulty in finding the right words or understanding what people are saying difficulty in performing previously routine tasks personality and mood changes
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It knows no social, economic, ethnic or geographical boundaries. Although each person will experience dementia in their own way, eventually those affected are unable to care for themselves and need help with all aspects of daily life. There is currently no cure, but treatments, advice, and support are available.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) An antibiotic tested on mice genetically designed to mimic the effects of Alzheimer's disease reduced and even eliminated protein deposits that are a major feature of the disease, a researcher says. Study: Head injuries early in life may lead to Alzheimer's disease
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Veterans who had serious head injuries decades ago now have a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease, a finding that suggests serious blows to the head may somehow cause delayed brain damage, researchers said Monday. The more severe the head injury, the greater the risk of developing Alzheimer's, teams at the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) and Duke University in North Carolina found.

'Washing' the brain free of Alzheimer's disease
Fletcher Barnes can't remember when he started playing the sax, because of mild Alzheimer's disease. From Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit ATLANTA (CNN) Seventy-two year old Fletcher Barnes is multi-talented. He shoots about a 90 on the golf course and plays the saxophone. But remembering when he started playing the sax is another story. His memory fails him but his wife steps in. He's played since high school, she says. What about short-term memory, like what he had for lunch that day? "I had lettuce," Barnes answered. "I remember eating all of my lettuce. But I forgot what was on the lettuce." This is what it's like to live with mild Alzheimer's disease. "It's frustrating really, sometimes. But yet I do most anything that I want to do," says Barnes.

Study: Dementia deadlier than first thought
(CNN) Nearly four million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, a mind-robbing condition that can exact a terrible psychological and financial toll on victims and their families. But few people, including many physicians, consider the disease to be deadly. But for older patients at least, an Alzheimer's diagnosis can be as devastating and potentially deadly as heart disease or cancer, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is projected to quadruple nationwide in the next 50 years, which means 1 in every 45 Americans will be afflicted with the degenerative condition, NEJM reported. The dramatic increase is primarily due to an aging population. The effect an Alzheimer's diagnosis can have on families is enormous.

60. Alzheimer Disease
We all forget things once in a while, but Alzheimer disease, a condition olderadults can get, is different than normal forgetting.
http://kidshealth.org/kid/grownup/conditions/alzheimers.html
KidsHealth Kids Health Problems of Grown-Ups
We all forget things once in a while. Maybe you've forgotten to send a card for someone's birthday or to return an overdue library book. Forgetting stuff is a part of life and it often becomes more common as people age. But Alzheimer (say: alts -hi-mer) disease , which affects some older people, is different from everyday forgetting. It is a condition that permanently affects the brain, and over time, makes it harder to remember even basic stuff, like how to tie a shoe. Eventually, the person may have trouble remembering the names and faces of family members - or even who he or she is. This can be very sad for the person and their families. It's important to know that Alzheimer disease does not affect kids. It usually affects people over 65 years of age. Researchers have found medicines that seem to slow the disease down. And there's hope that someday there will be a cure. What Happens in the Brain?
You probably know that your brain works by sending signals. Chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters (say: nur-oh- trans -mih-terz), allow brain cells to communicate with each other. But a person with Alzheimer disease has decreased amounts of neurotransmitters. People with Alzheimer disease also develop deposits of stuff (protein and fiber) that prevent the cells from working properly. When this happens, the cells can't send the right signals to other parts of the brain. Over time, brain cells affected by Alzheimer disease also begin to shrink and die.
