High Calorie Diets may increase risk of Alzheimer's
A diet high in calories and fat may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease in people who are genetically susceptible to the disorder, new preliminary research suggests. The study found that people who consumed the most calories and fat faced double the risk of developing Alzheimer's. The findings, which are reported in this month's Archives of Neurology, are the latest evidence that lifestyle factors including diet may play a role in Alzheimer's. It is thought that restricting calories may slow the aging process by reducing production of cell-damaging oxygen molecules called free radicals, formed during the body's breakdown of food. The latest study, though preliminary, suggests that for some people, calorie restriction might lower Alzheimer's risks by curbing nerve-cell death in the brain. Diet Advice
A balanced diet coupled with regular exercise is still the best way to lose weight and reduce fat.

What Alzheimer's disease diet therapy is suggested?
Dark-Colored Fruits and Vegetables. According to several studies, eating plenty of darkly colored fruits and vegetables may slow brain aging. Of interest was a 1999 study on animals, in which extracts taken from blueberries and strawberries actually reversed age-related decline in brain function. Blueberries were the most effective. Dark-colored fruits and vegetables are recommended in any case for good health. Soy. Soy has estrogen-like properties and animal studies suggest it may might be protective against Alzheimer's disease, particularly in postmenopausal women. Of some concern, however, were one population and a few animal studies suggest that soy intake may actually pose a risk for greater mental among older men. More research is needed to confirm the effects of soy on the aging brain and to determine if there are gender differences. Alcohol. Some studies have suggested that moderate intake of alcohol (one or two drinks a day) of any kind may protect the aging brain, possibly by releasing acetylcholine, the chemical in the brain that is deficient in Alzheimer's disease. Although most studies have focused on wine, a 2001 Dutch study found that light to moderate alcohol intake, regardless of alcohol type, helped protect against dementia, including Alzheimer's. Not all studies have been positive. One, for example, suggested that wine may have some protective properties for noncarriers of ApoE4 but actually increase the risk for carriers of the gene. In any case, heavy alcohol consumption offers no protection and is dangerous. Alcohol also may increase the risk for breast cancer in women and should never be consumed during pregnancy.

    Alzheimers Disease and Memory Loss
Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss Your brain is a vital organ, and like the other vital organs in your body, it can be damaged by poor diet, stress, exposure to toxins, and aging. Just like your heart, your brain won’t work as well if cholesterol deposits or high blood pressure damages the arteries that supply its blood. In fact, a study from the Netherlands found that the same high-saturated-fat diet raises your risk of having a heart attack or stroke also makes you more prone to developing dementia. That word doesn’t mean demented, exactly. But dementia does include age-related memory impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. "What works for the heart, works for the brain, with some modifications," says Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., president and medical director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Foundation in Tucson and co-author of Brain Longevity. That’s why many of the nutritional supplements recommended to shield your brain from age-related memory impairment also offer protection from heart disease.

Doctors in Tasmania are looking into a link between Alzheimers disease and diet.
They have found patients with Alzheimers are more at risk of developing heart disease and stroke and think following a healthy diet may be the key.
Dr George Razay from Launceston General Hospital has found the same abnormalities in the blood of Alzheimers patients as those with heart disease.
Both groups had lower levels of good cholesterol and fatty acids and high levels of insulin.
He says one way of warding off Alzheimers is to reduce the risk of heart disease.
"Basically healthy diet which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acid and regular exercise can improve these vascular risk factors and might help to reduce the risk of Alzheimers," Dr Razay said.

MARK COLVIN: Finally tonight, there's new hope in the treatment of Alzheimers Disease. Researchers have discovered a link between the illness and diet. Up until now Alzheimers was considered simply to be part of the aging process. But researchers at Oxford University have found that food rich in folic acid and vitamin B12 could significantly reduce the prevalence of the disease.
Professor David Smith, who was in charge of the latest study, will unveil his findings at the Alzheimers Association's national conference in Perth this week. Adrienne Lowth reports.

There have been so many stories and myths about Alzheimer's disease that it boggles the mind. If one were to believe all of them, you wouldn't cook in aluminum pots nor drink sodas from aluminum cans. I was at an Alzheimer's conference years ago when a man burst through the door waving a sign that said "Aluminum causes Alzheimer's. They kicked him out, but that is not to say that aluminum could not be the cause. Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants, drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your aluminum pots and pans.¾ In my opinion, it truly depends on who you speak to. Personally, I really do not know the cause of Alzheimer's and I really don't know anyone who does.

    How does vascular dementia develop?
To be healthy and function properly, the brain cells need a good supply of blood. The blood is delivered through a network of blood vessels called the vascular system. If the vascular system within the brain becomes damaged and blood cannot reach the brain cells they will eventually die. This can lead to the onset of vascular dementia. What causes vascular dementia?
There are a number of conditions that can cause or increase damage to the vascular system. These include high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol and diabetes. It is therefore important that these conditions are identified and treated at the earliest opportunity. What are the symptoms of vascular dementia?

What is Alzheimer's disease? Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting around 500,000 people in the UK. This information sheet outlines the symptoms and causes of Alzheimer's disease, and describes what treatments are currently available. Alzheimer's disease, first described by the German neurologist Alois Alzheimer, is a physical disease affecting the brain. During the course of the disease 'plaques' and 'tangles' develop in the structure of the brain, leading to the death of brain cells. We also know that people with Alzheimer's have a shortage of some important chemicals in their brain. These chemicals are involved with the
transmission of messages within the brain. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, which means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged. As this happens, the symptoms become more severe. Symptoms

    (Dietary and Lifestyle Implications):
In patients having Alzheimer's disease the brain is somewhat shrunken and, on postmortum examination, a definite loss of nervous tissue is noted. Examination of the brain tissues under a microscope reveals small bundles of material called senile plaques, scattered throughout the tissues. The more plaques that are present, the worse is the mental condition of the patient. Chemical analysis reveals the presence of the metal aluminum at the core of each plaque and within many of the cells found in the plaques. Evidence is accumulating to indicate that aluminum may be involved in the formation of the plaques, and it is therefore a prime suspect as the initial cause of the disease. Five population studies now link Alzheimer's disease to aluminum in drinking water. As early as 1885, aluminum was shown to be toxic to the nervous tissues of animals. Aluminum can also produce a degeneration of the nervous tissues in cats and rabbits that resembles in some ways that seen in the brains of human patients with Alzheimer's disease. Patients with diseased kidneys accumulate large amounts of aluminum in their bodies from medications and from kidney-machine solutions that have been used until recently. This accumulation results in a severe mental deterioration.

Enriched Environment and Diet Delays Alzheimer's Disease (in Mice!)
Using a well known familial Alzheimers mouse model, Sam Sisodia and his colleagues found that environmental enrichment (larger cages, colored tunnels, running wheels, toys, etc.) resulted in lower levels of amyloid deposition in the hippocampus and cortex. Very interesting. This actually fits with informal observations by clinicians. Many practitioners have noted anecdotally that the progression of disease seems slower in those with very active intellectual lives.
Using microarrays, Lazarov et al. also found that environmental enrichment triggered the upregulation of a number of immediate early genes. That might also lead to more interesting work. At least for the present, the journal Cell is graciously providing free access to this paper.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Five to ten percent of people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer's disease. A smaller percentage of those under 65 are affected with it. Strongly implicated in this dreaded disease is aluminum. Aluminum is the commonest metal on the earth's crust and, after oxygen and selenium, the most abundant element on earth. It comes in bauxite ore. Fifty years ago the widespread use of this metal became common. And for many more years, aluminum salts have been used for pickling vegetables. We now find it in tap water, antacids, antiperspirants, and many other places. Dialysis patients go mad, have trouble talking, confusion, muscle spasms, become helpless, demented, bedridden, and die. The large amounts of tap water from cities using aluminum for flocculation procedures apparently caused these patients to have their difficulty. These patients routinely swallow large amounts of aluminum in antacids to prevent the build-up of phosphorus in their blood. Dialysis dementia is a common complication of dialysis. Aluminum attaches itself to blood protein and gains easy entry to the brain.
In Guam, soil and water is low in calcium and magnesium, and especially high in aluminum. There is much Lou Gehrig's and Parkinson's disease in Guam. Aluminum is high in the neurofibrillary tangles.

Vascular Dementia Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia, accounting for about 20 per cent of all cases by itself and up to another 20 per cent in combination with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease alone accounts for about 50 per cent. It usually affects people between the ages of 60 and 75 and is slightly more common in men than women. Vascular dementia is a term for dementia associated with problems in the circulation of blood to the brain (cerebrovascular disease). It encompasses a wide range of diseases or disorders, the principal feature of which is loss of intellectual abilities. Unlike with most forms of Alzheimer’s disease, the cause of vascular dementia is known. If blood vessels in the brain burst (cerebral haemorrhage), if arteries blocked by plaque formation or clots (thrombosis or embolism), or if there is insufficient blood flow to parts of the brain (ischaemia) brain tissue will die. This is often called a stroke. It is thought that about a fifth of people who have strokes will develop problems involving their mental abilities including dementia. The risk factors for vascular dementia are those associated with all forms of stroke, the most significant of which is high blood pressure (hypertension). Brain tissue may also die due to disease in the blood vessels. Following is an overview of types of vascular dementia, causes, diagnosis and progression. However, it is important to note that unlike with most Alzheimer’s cases, vascular dementia can be very difficult to distinguish from other forms of dementia and many researchers still do not agree on the various “types” of vascular dementia.
