Alzheimer’s disease and diet
Consuming a diet rich in vitamins E and C as well as fish can greatly reduce one’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Further help in preventing the disease may come from limiting the amount of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol in one’s diet. Alzheimer’s disease A progressive condition, Alzheimer’s disease damages areas of the brain involved in memory, intelligence, judgment, language and behavior. It is the most common form of mental decline in older adults and is usually diagnosed at age 70 or older. The disease affects not only memory, but behavior, personality, ability to think and the ability to function from day to day in four million Americans. Although its cause is still unknown, most experts believe multiple factors are involved. A family history of the disease can greatly increase one’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s, as well as smoking cigarettes, serious head injuries, elevated homocysteine levels and exposure to elevated levels of lead and/or zinc.

Diet Rich in Foods with Vitamin E May Reduce Alzheimer's Disease Risk
alzheimersupport.com A new population-based study of antioxidants, appearing in the June 26, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), suggests that a diet rich in foods containing vitamin E may help protect some people against Alzheimer's disease (AD). The latest in a series of reports on vitamin E and dementia, the findings heighten interest in the outcome of clinical trials now underway to test the effectiveness of vitamin E and other antioxidants in preventing or postponing cognitive decline and AD. "This and a number of important population studies have pointed to vitamin E as possibly protective against oxidative damage or other mechanisms associated with cognitive decline and dementia," says Neil Buckholtz, Ph.D., head of the Dementias of Aging Branch at the National Institute on Aging (NIA). "The only way this association can really be tested is through clinical studies and trials now underway. These will help us determine whether vitamin E in food or in supplements — or taken together — can prevent or slow down the development of mild cognitive impairment or AD."

Diet, Exercise, Stimulating Environment Help Old Dogs Learn January 18, 2005 PDF format for best printing results . Full text also follows: According to conventional wisdom, old dogs and new tricks aren't a good match. But a new study of beagles finds that regular physical activity, mental stimulation, and a diet rich in antioxidants can help keep aging canine-and perhaps human-brains in tip-top shape. The research, supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is among the first to examine the combined effects of these interventions and suggests that diet and mental exercise may work more effectively in combination than by themselves. During the two-year longitudinal study, William Milgram, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto, Elizabeth Head, Ph.D., and Carl Cotman, Ph.D., of the University of California, Irvine and their colleagues found older beagles performed better on cognitive tests and were more likely to learn new tasks when they were fed a diet fortified with plenty of fruits, vegetables and vitamins, were exercised at least twice weekly, and were given the opportunity to play with other dogs and a variety of stimulating toys. The study is reported in the January 2005

Vegetarian Diet Increases Alzheimers Risk
Elderly people with low blood levels of vitamin B-12 and folate may face an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Vitamin B-12 plays an important role in maintaining nerve cells, and some research has linked low blood levels of the vitamin to Alzheimer's and mental decline. Few studies have looked at whether there is such a connection between Alzheimer's and folate, a B vitamin key to the production and maintenance of body cells.
In a study of 370 men and women aged 75 and older, investigators found that

How to Easily and Inexpensively Blow Away Alzheimer's Disease
Researchers have provided solid evidence that dietary changes may offer an alternative approach to treating and preventing Alzheimer's diseasea chronic form of dementia, which results in severe memory loss and eventually death. Specifically, studies indicated that a low carbohydrate diet that reduced total caloric intake by 30 percent prevented the formation of amyloid plaque development in a strain of mice genetically engineered to develop the disease. Amyloid plaque development is a primary problem associated with Alzheimer's. Through testing, researchers found:
  • Mice did not develop the physiological markers of Alzheimer's when fed a restricted diet that provided 70 percent of the calories eaten by similar mice that were allowed to eat as much and as often as they pleased, or ad-lib

Major news outlets covered the story, 20/20 jumped on it in its usual tabloid style, and the few big anti-soy sites out there have had a field day sensationalizing it. AD is a progressive disease that destroys the mind with forgetfulness in early stages, followed by the inability to communicate and provide self-care. On average, patients die within 8 years of the onset of the first symptoms, but the disease can linger as long as 20 years. The five drugs currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of AD patients (tacrine, donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, and memantine), at most, improve symptoms, and none has been shown to slow the progression of AD. Therefore, it is imperative that no obstacle stand in the way of utilizing the knowledge we presently have to spare others the kind of suffering inflicted upon the Reagan family.
