Alzheimer's Disease Overview
General Health Newsletter Alzheimer's Disease Health News
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and a disturbance in at least one other thinking function (for example, language or perception of reality). Many scientists believe that AD results from an increase in the production or accumulation of a specific protein (beta-amyloid protein) that leads to nerve cell death. Loss of nerve cells in strategic brain areas, in turn, causes deficits in the neurotransmitters, which are the brain's chemical messengers. For more, read the Alzheimer's Disease article.

Overview of Sandra Martin Productions: Sandra Martin Productions is a video production company in Omaha, Nebraska. Since our founding in 1996, we have produced a number of videotapes designed to raise viewers' awareness on a variety of sensitive topics. A small and highly focused company, we are unique in many ways. First unlike many other production houseswe do not accept outside commissions; our production choices are based solely on our own personal and heartfelt criteria. Secondly, we are personally involved in all aspects of a creative project, from developing the concept, researching, writing the script, and handling the on-camera interviewing, to directing, producing and marketing the finished production. And lastly, given the fact that we are creative people and not necessarily experts on the many complex issues we deal with, we work closely with those who are, affiliating early-on in a project with that project's appropriate professional organization. Overview of The View from the Inside Collection: The video collection titled View from the Inside makes up the heart of Sandra Martin Productions. Producing this collection was a dream of Sandra's for many years, and was, in fact, the propelling force behind the company's beginnings.

Brain scan may help detect Alzheimer's disease
June 22, 1998
Web posted at: 11:13 p.m. EDT (0313 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) Doctors may soon be able to use high-tech brain scanning devices to determine if people with memory problems are at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston say the scans, known as single photon emission computed tomography scans, or SPECT, will measure blood flow to the brain in an attempt to detect those at risk of developing the disease. According to a study published in the latest issue of the journal Neurology, a review of the SPECT scans of 136 patients showed reduced blood flow readings in four areas of the brain. Three of those areas in the brain are related to memory.

Alzheimer's Disease
Medical Author: Yuri Bronstein, M.D.
Medical Editor: Stefan M. Pulst, M.D. What is Alzheimer's disease?
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and a disturbance in at least one other thinking function (for example, language or perception of reality). Many scientists believe that AD results from an increase in the production or accumulation of a specific protein (beta-amyloid protein) that leads to nerve cell death. Loss of nerve cells in strategic brain areas, in turn, causes deficits in the neurotransmitters, which are the brain's chemical messengers. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging and is not something that inevitably happens in later life. Rather, it is one of the dementing disorders, which are a group of brain diseases that result in the loss of mental and physical functions.
