Information for Alumni Organizations BASIC RULES FOR ALUMNI ORGANIZATIONS Your efforts to recruit students to the University of Alabama are invaluable and your continued support of intercollegiate athletics is also invaluable. However, when it comes to student-athletes and prospective student-athletes, alumni need to be extremely cautious in your activities.
  • Representatives of the University’s athletics interests (i.e., boosters) include anyone who has been involved in any way in promoting the athletics program, has ever made a financial contribution to the University (including buying season tickets), or that have been a member of any organization which promotes the athletics programs. Boosters are not permitted to be involved in the recruitment of student-athletes.

St. Michael's Diocesan High School Alumni Association
St. Michael's Diocesan High School opened its doors in 1926, and proceeded to educate approximately 400 boys each year. Closing its doors in 1960, the school taught 2400 young men who would go on to roles of accomplishment and leadership in many fields of service.
Sharing a building with an elementary school, the Michaelmen persevered in spite of a totally inadequate physical plant. Located in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood, the school would serve students from parishes in southwest Brooklyn. Lacking a gym, laboratory, adequate library or lunch room, St Mike's had one priceless asset- a dedicated, talented faculty of Xaverian Brothers. Partners in sharing the "primitive" site on 43rd Street, the bond of love and respect that was forged between Brothers and boys is a bond that endures to this day.
St. Michael's was one of a chain of diocesan high schools operated by the Diocese of Brooklyn. The 43rd Street quarters were supposed to be temporary, but the Great Depression and World War II put an end to any major building program at that time.

A Career of Global Service A.G. “Terry” Shaffer ’61 At 25, A.G. “Terry” Shaffer ’61 had already reached a crossroads in his career. He was an English and history teacher at Danville High School. He liked teaching, but always felt he would continue in education until a career he would be more passionate about came along. When an opportunity arose with an organization dedicated to serving children and young adults, Shaffer joined Kiwanis International and was able to apply his passion to his profession. Over his 35-year career, he has served in a number of leadership roles and traveled the world for the organization that has over 8,000 clubs in 90 countries. After joining the organization full time, he was promoted in 1969 to the director of club service. Over his career, he has served as club secretary, division and district chair, and president of three different Key Clubs. He has been named Kiwanian of the Year three times. In 1994 Shaffer was appointed executive director of Kiwanis International, the position from which he will retire this fall. His service with Kiwanis will continue, as he was elected the 2004-05 lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis’ Indy Metro Division of Indiana, and has agreed to serve as an archivist for the organization. On behalf of Kiwanis, Shaffer has traveled to 29 countries including Malaysia, India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Some visits were made as part of Kiwanis’ first worldwide service project. In the mid-‘90s Kiwanis joined forces with UNICEF to battle iodine deficiency disorder, an epidemic effecting children in lesser developed countries. Shaffer explains his commitment to this endeavor. “The Kiwanis community is not found just in our backyard. Our clubs are absolutely devoted to meeting the needs of our local communities, but a slice of our efforts has to be beyond that.” The project raised $75 million dollars and Kiwanis continues to work with UNICEF to monitor the project and encourage continued funding.

Organization of Black Alumni
History
In September of 1989, a reunion gathering of African-American alumni evolved into a vision and plan of action to develop the Organization of Black Alumni (OBA). On October 5, 1992, founding members celebrated OBA's induction into the Wayne State University Alumni Association as an affiliate under the unified membership program, making OBA the second non-college, alumni constituent group. In just ten years the organization has served alumni by hosting major annual events, providing mentoring programs, honoring 40 distinguished alumni with the prestigious OBA Achievement Award and co-sponsored the annual Black Graduation Convocation. OBA is ranked fourth in membership among the university's twenty alumni constituent groups.
Mission
Building a strong African American community by supporting minority advancement through shared information and ideas. OBA provides outstanding opportunities for thousands of African American Wayne State University alumni and friends to network as part of a series of events and programs for social, cultural and educational enrichment. Extending a helping hand to Detroit high school students is also a high-priority for OBA. The Detroit Public High School Endowment Fund provides scholarships to deserving students who aspire to further their education by attending Wayne State University.

Thanks for reading Purdue Now Hail Purdue! General news Richard Borgens examines X-rays of a patient who has just had an oscillating field stimulator implanted near the spine. Paralysis team making strides
from Purdue's Perspective magazine
Richard Borgens remembers when he first knew he would dedicate his career to helping paralysis victims. "I was invited to a meeting of the National Paraplegia Foundation of Chicago," he says. "It was 1976, and I was fresh out of Purdue’s Ph.D. program in biophysics. I had just won one of two national fellowships from the foundation, and they were going to present me with the award at their annual banquet. It didn’t sound too thrilling I thought I was going to walk into a room full of old people standing around in suits, but instead I saw something I’ll never forget." Purdue's Krannert School of Management's international executive MBA degree program placed 11th worldwide up three places from 2003 in rankings released Nov. 1 by the Financial Times.
